The aim of work was to characterise the physical and chemical properties of spray dried honey preparations and the changes in these properties during storage. Spray drying was performed at inlet air temperature 160 and 200°C, atomising disk speed 32 000 and 38 000 rpm, with the use of two types of carriers: dextrin and maltodextrin. The resulting powders had the desirable physical properties: low water content and activity, complete solubility and low cohesiveness. The powders produced with the use of dextrin had higher hygroscopicity and poorer solubility, they were also characterised by the highest water absorption during storage. Powders obtained with the use of reduced atomisation speed were the most stable in terms of water absorption and the changes of hygroscopicity during storage. Solubility of all powders was stable during storage.

Otrzymane proszki miały pożądane właściwości fizyczne: niską zawartość i aktywność wody, całkowitą rozpuszczalność i niską spójność. Proszki wytworzone z wykorzystaniem dekstryny miały wyższą higroskopijność i gorszą rozpuszczalność, charakteryzowały się najwyższą ilością wchłoniętej wody w czasie przechowywania. Proszki otrzymane z wykorzystaniem zmniejszonej szybkości obrotowej dysku rozpylającego były bardziej stabilne pod względem absorpcji wody i zmiany higroskopijności podczas przechowywania. Rozpuszczalność wszystkich proszków była stabilna w czasie przechowywania.

Modeling physicochemical properties plays an important role in the function of animal and plant preparations which are widely used in the food processing. The study presents some functional characteristics of 21 randomly selected protein preparations subjected to the examination under the same analytical conditions. All examined preparations were highly variable in their composition, solubility, emulsifying and foaming properties. It has been confimed that the evaluation of protein preparation hydrophobicity is possible using different empirical or computational methods. The surface hydrophobicity value may be used to extend complex laboratory characterization of protein preparations.

The aim of our experiment was to determine the effect of heating oil application on the count of microorganisms and some physico-chemical properties of limed and lime-free soil and soil sown with yellow lupine of the Markiz variety and unsown soil. The results obtained indicate that heating oil deteriorated the physico-chemical properties of the experimental soil (acidification, decrease in the total alkaline exchangeable cations, soil exchange capacity and alkaline cation soil saturation). At the same time, it stimulated, to a different degree, the multiplication of soil microorganisms, especially oligotrophic bacteria (10-fold) and bacteria representing the genera of Pseudomonas spp. (8-fold). Lime application and cultivation of yellow lupine had a positive effect on the physico-chemical properties of soil and stimulated the growth of Azotobacter spp.

AMP-deaminase from hen stomach smooth muscle was isolated and physico-chemical properties of the purified enzyme were investigated. The enzyme had an activity optimum at pH 6.5, and poorly deaminated the substrate analogues tested. At optimum pH (6.5), in the absence of regulatory ligands (control conditions), the enzyme manifested hyperbolic substrate-saturation kinetics with half-saturation constant GS0.5) of about 4.5 mM. Additions of adenine nucleotide effectors (ATP, ADP) activated the enzyme strongly at all the concentrations tested, diminishing significantly the value of S0.5 constant. In contrast, the regulatory effect of orthophosphate was variable, and depended on the orthophosphate concentration used. The molecular mass of the enzyme subunit determined in SDS/PAG electrophoresis was about of 37 kDa. The obtained results suggest that in different types of hen muscle, similarly as in humans and rats, expression of AMP-deaminase is under the control of independent genes.

The effect of diesel oil contamination on the number of soil microrflora in light clay sand and light clay was determined in a pot experiment. The experimental soil was contaminated with the following doses of diesel oil (ON) calculated as maximum water capacity (MWC): 0; 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5 and 3%. The lowest dose of diesel oil (0.5% MWC) for the lighter soil was 1.67 g · kg⁻¹ d.m. and for heavier soil it was 1.71 g · kg⁻¹ d.m. Varied urea fertilization also was applied: 0 and 250 mg N g · kg⁻¹ d.m. of soil. For the initial 18 days, the pots were maintained unsown. On day 18, the Juno variety of yellow lupine was planted (7 plants per pot). The yellow lupine plants were harvested at the blooming phase. Soil samples were taken on day 18 and immediately after yellow lupine harvest. Based on the results, soil contamination with 0.5% to 3.0% MWC of diesel oil was found to disturb the soil microbiological balance. This substance stimulated the development of oligotrophic, copiotrophic, sporulating copiotrophic and Actinomycetales and inhibited the development of Azotobacter spp. and cellulolytic bacteria. Fertilisation with urea had a positive effect on the multiplication of the above microorganisms. The number of oligotrophic, copiotrophic bacteria and Actinomycetales was higher in the light clay, whereas the number of sporulating oligotrophic, sporulating copiotrophic and cellulolytic bacteria and fungi was greater in light clay sand soil. Yellow lupine cultivation had a positive effect on the multiplication of sporulating oligotrophic, copiotrophic and cellulolytic bacteria and fungi in both analyzed types of soil. Hydrolytic acidity and organic carbon content were positively correlated, whereas pH, total exchangeable cations and alkaline cation soil saturation were negatively correlated with soil contamination with diesel oil.

This study includes information concerning supercritical fluids. Beginning from the general description of the supercritical fluids, their historical background with physico-chemical properties is given. Special properties with the aid of which supercritical characteristics are obtained are attempted to be explained. Also, supercritical C02 (SCC02), as a solvent for extraction related to the advantages of using such a solvent carrying supercritical properties, is discussed. In order to understand the mechanism of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), the modelling concept of supercritical fluids (SCFs) and the criteria for various separation techniques are redefined.

Native potato starch was oxidized by means of: sodium chlorate(I), hydrogen peroxide and sodium chlorate(III) - at presence of formaldehyde. Native and modified starches were analyzed for the contents of carboxylic and aldehyde groups, amylose and total phosphorus. Also water binding capacity as well as the solubility in water, gelatinization characteristics and flowing curves analyses were done. On the bases of obtained results it may be stated that sodium chlorate(I) and hydrogen peroxide were more effective oxidizing agents than sodium chlorate(III). Oxidized starches were characterized by lower total phosphorus and amylose contents. All applied modifications caused total solubility of obtained starches at 80°C. Modification with sodium chlorate(III) and hydrogen peroxide did not change the water biding capacity of starch solubility in water at temp. 60°C, whereas with the sodium chlorate(III) - the solubility only. It was also observed, the lowering of parameters of gelatinization profile and K coefficient of consistency due to action of oxidizing agents. Sodium chlorate(III) decreased the viscosity of obtained glued starch only during refrigeration and holding at temperature 50°C.

Naturalną skrobię ziemniaczaną poddano reakcji utleniania chloranem(I) sodu, nadtlenkiem wodoru oraz chloranem(III) sodu w obecności formaldehydu. W skrobi naturalnej oraz w uzyskanych preparatach modyfikowanych oznaczono zawartość grup aldehydowych i karboksylowych, zawartość fosforu całkowitego, zdolność wiązania wody i rozpuszczalność w wodzie. Modyfikacja chloranem(III) sodu spowodowała obniżenie lepkość kleiku skrobiowego jedynie w trakcie chłodzenia i przetrzymywania go w temp. 50°C.

Background. The copaiba oil is a common natural product used in cosmetic industry and as a nutraceutical product. However, lack of quality control and scarce knowledge about its antimicrobial activity is a point of concern. The proposal of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties and the antimicrobial activity of five commercial brands of copaiba oil. Material and methods. Acidity and ester index, refractory index, solubility in alcohol, and thin layer chromatography were performed to verify the physicochemical properties of five commercial copaiba oils sold in local pharmacies. Ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode-array detection and electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-DAD/ESI-Q-TOF-MS) was used to investigate diterpene acids while the volatile compounds were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antibacterial and antifungal activities were also evaluated by agar diffusion technique; and minimal inhibitory concentration and maximal bactericidal concentration were defined for each sample and bacteria. Results. The physical-chemical analysis revealed heterogeneity between all samples analysed. The A1 sample showed characteristics of copaiba oil and was mainly composed by hydrocarbon sesquiterpenes (29.95% β-bisabolene, 25.65% Z-a-bergamotene and 10.27% β-cariophyllene). Among diterpene acids, the UPLC- DAD/ESI-Q-TOF-MS data are compatible with presence of copalic and/or kolavenic acid (m/z 305 [M + H]+). Candida albicans was sensitive to almost all samples at high concentration and Saccaromyces. cere- visiae showed sensitivity to A1 sample at 100 mg/mL. Although variable, all samples showed antibacterial activity. Significant activity was seen for A3 (19.0 ±0 and 15.6 ±0.5 mm), A4 (16.6 ±0.5 and 15.6 ±0 mm), and A5 (17.1 ±0 and 17.1 ±0 mm) on Staphylococcus saprophyticus and S. aureus, respectively. All samples were active against Klebsiella pneumoniae showing >15 mm diameter halo inhibition; and only A2 was active against Eschirichia coli. Phytopatogens tested revealed resistance of Ralstonia solanacearum CGH12 to all samples and susceptibility of Xcv 112 strain of Xanthomonas campestris pv campestris to almost all samples. MIC and MMC showed bacteriostatic effect against clinical interest bacteria and bactericidal effect against phytopatogens. Conclusion. The results from physicochemical analysis reinforce the fact that it is imperative to include simple conventional methods in the analysis of oil products. The analysis of copaiba oil gives safe products and purity which ensure products with quality. Also, since copaiba oil is an over-the-counter product the results indicate that pharmacosurveillance must be improved by the governmental regulation agency to avoid microorganism resistance selection and to achieve better international quality products.

The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of sediments samples collected along the Mahim Creek of Mumbai. The annual average pH value of the creek sediments was recorded as 9.22. It is feared that such conditions may increase the alkalinity of Creek water which according to USEPA will increase the physiological stress of many aquatic species resulting in decreased reproduction, decreased growth, disease, or death thereby reducing the biological diversity of the Creek. The total organic matter in the creek sediments was found to be maximum of 10.30 % with an annual average concentration of 6.29 %. Although organic matter is a primary source of food for benthic organisms and is important in maintaining a viable ecosystem, too much of organic matter deposited in the sediments will be responsible for depletion in dissolved oxygen content of the creek water causing unpleasant odours and may also increase the rate of eutrophication. From the results it appears that as India moves towards stricter regulation of industrial effluents to control water pollution, greater efforts are required to control the discharge of pollutants into the ecosystems.

The discovery of cyclosporine A was a milestone in organ transplantation and the treatment of autoimmune diseases. However, developing an efficient oral delivery system for this drug is complicated by its poor biopharmaceutical characteristics (low solubility and permeability) and the need to carefully monitor its levels in the blood. Current research is exploring various approaches, including those based on emulsions, microspheres, nanoparticles, and liposomes. Although progress has been made, none of the formulations is flawless. This review is a brief description of the main pharmaceutical systems and devices that have been described for the oral delivery of cyclosporine A in the context of the physicochemical properties of the drug and the character of its interactions with lipid membranes.
