The article describes the literary processing of Friedrich Glauser’s two-year stay in the Foreign Legion. On the one hand he describes the Legion in his novels very realistically (for example in Gourrama [1940]), on the other – poetical transfigured (Die Fieberkurve [1938]). Neither of the portraits is similar to the illusion promoted in the adventure literature, which the author tried to fight against. He devoted his literary work to this goal. The truth for Glauser and the protagonist of his novels (Studer) was the main value.

The following article is an attempt at exploring the meaning of the erotic in Eberhard Hilscher’s novels (Die Weltzeituhr, Venus bezwingt den Vulkan, Glückspieler und Spielverderber). The analysis focuses not only on the erotic adventures of the protagonists, but also on the role of the erotic in Hilscher’s esthetic programme. The detailed examination (close reading) of the novels leads to the following conclusion: the author presents different possibilities of the representation of the erotic, which in his view should be conducive not only to the entertainment, but also to the education of the reader.

The paper deals with the identification of proverbs in a literary text, which is believed to be the initial stage in the analysis of paremias in literary context and part and parcel of any paremiostylitic analysis. Proverbs manifest themselves in what the author calls a paremic locus. Paremias are present in a text on the formal level, where a particular proverb is signalled by its structure, either canonical or modified. Proverbs can be identified as well on the semantic plane, although in this case their presence is impossible to ascertain in objective terms. The author analyses the ten novels by Salman Rushdie, which all provide ample evidence of paremic loci.

The interview with Marek Bieńczyk covers, in general, the subject of the philosophy of novel by Milan Kundera and the reception of his works nowadays in Poland and abroad. Marek Bieńczyk – the French translator of Milan Kundera’s novels – talks about the history of his first translations and the beginnings of scientific thinking about Kundera. Moreover, he explains the problems connected with Kundera’s authorial and elaborate philosophy of novel: the conception of narrator, hero and composition. Bieńczyk also narrates his own memories with M. Kundera. What is more, he indicates the inspirations he draws in his own work from innovative prose by Czech novelist, who is celebrating his 91st anniversary this year.

After a brief historical-methodological overview, this study is meant to prove that the theory of rhetorical genres (deliberative, judicial and epideictic), connected to that of the literary genres, offers scholars more insightful critical opportunities. The nouvelle rhétorique, applied to the analysis of rhetorical and literary genres, permits to unveil the argumentative dimension in literature. We have evaluated some passages of the Decameron and I promessi sposi [The Betrothed], two of the great classics of Italian literature, differing by historical settings, genres and contents. The two books have been analyzed from the rhetorical perspective. I promessi sposi [The Betrothed] may be interpreted as an instance of judicial genre, while the Decameron as deliberative and epideictic genres.

The topic of Ukrainian-Russian relations is very important in the alternative history novels of the Ukrainian writer Vasily Kożeljanko (1957-2008). Alternative histories novels "Parade in Moscow" (1997), "Kotigoroško" (2000), "Terorium" (2001), "FalseNostradamus" (2001) novels appeared in an independent Ukraine when there was no longer a Soviet censorship. In alternative historical prose, heroes can be embedded in the history of an active person or as fictional characters who carry the ethno-stereotypical lines of their community and have ethno-stereotypes about other peoples. Ethnic stereotypes of Ukrainians and Russians and stereotypes of Ukraina and Russia can be mythologised. Relations between a stronger and weaker, older and younger, colonizing country and colonized country are presented as a conflict between Strong Russia and a weak Ukraine, but also a strong Ukraine of weak Russia. Russian Empire in the of Kożeljankos alternative histories novels presented negatively.

The author of this article interprets the "Kamienie na szaniec" by Aleksander Kamiński, using the methodology of new historicism and psychotraumatology. In particular, the attempt is put into answering the question whether the narrative of "Kamienie..." is the story of historiographical, ideological, and mythologising, or rather therapeutic and pedagogical aim. The analysis will also address other selected texts (like "Zośka and Parasol"), containing reports of experiencing traumatic events and overcoming the trauma caused by the September defeat and the Warsaw Uprising.

Artykuł jest próbą literaturoznawczego spojrzenia na twórczość literacką Bibianny Moraczewskiej, działaczki politycznej i społecznej, która także próbowała swoich sił na polu artystycznym. Jej utwory to bardziej próby, opowiastki o tematyce patriotyczno-religijnej z wątkiem miłosnym, przynależące do grupy tekstów popularnych, adresowanych do wszystkich zainteresowanych problematyką kobiecą i losami ojczyzny. Ich nieskomplikowane schematy kompozycyjne (fabularne) nie wymagały bowiem wnikliwych zabiegów interpretacyjnych, odsłaniających ukryte sensy. Autorka znała prawdę i chciała ją przekazać czytelnikowi, zamierzała się nią podzielić. Pokazywała bohaterów narodowych i silne, samodzielne i zaradne kobiety.

The article is an attempt at a literary perspective on the Bibianna Moraczewska’s creation, a political and social activist who also tried her strength in the field of art. Her works are patriotic and religious with a love theme, they belong to a group of popular texts addressed to all those interested in women's issues and the fate of the motherland. The uncomplicated compositional patterns of these works did not require in-depth interpretive measures, revealing hidden meanings. The author knew the truth and wanted to pass it on to the reader. She showed national heroes and strong, independent and resourceful women.

Даден е и опис на работата на издавачките куќи кои се решаваат да издадат дела од полската литература. Проблемите во преведувањето произлегуваат од културните разлики, а резултатот е слика на современото полско општество во кое има доволно критична мисла, но и вплетена историја како надоврзување на традицијата.

This commentary conserns the reasons and motivation for choosing particular novels to be translated into Macedonian. A short review of their style is given, as well as the common ground with the Macedonian literature. We describe the way of the working of the publishing houses which have decided to publish Polish literature. Problems in translation turn out to be of a cultural nature, concerning the differences and, as a result, the reader is presented with the picture of contemporary Polish society, which is overwhelmed by critical thinking, but still deals with the history as a way to further develop the tradition.

Transforming reality into traces of what once was, Barbey d’Aurevilly’s novels create a world of vestiges which entice the reader to pursue what always escapes his grasp. This article distinguishes, among these vestiges, the lost feeling of love in individuals’ lives, the loss of tradition through the turmoil of the French Revolution, and the neglected effects of sin according to the Christian narrative. It then attempts to show how these representations of the past, successively psychological, political and theological, are summoned by a layering of uncertain recollections. These take the form of bodily experience, as characters are faced with their own physical decay over time; of territorial symbols, as loss is woven into the landscape in which those characters evolve; and of mysterious utterances, as custodians of memory both suggest and veil by their words the meaning of events.

Métamorphosant le réel en un ensemble de traces, Barbey d’Aurevilly opère dans ses romans un devenir-vestige du monde, qui suscite dans l’imagination de son lecteur une quête de ce qui toujours se dérobe à lui. On distinguera, parmi ces vestiges, ceux du sentiment perdu sur le plan individuel, ceux de la tradition perdue sur le plan de l’histoire, et ceux de la faute sur le plan du récit chrétien. On s’efforcera surtout de montrer que ces représentations du révolu, tour à tour psychologique, politique et métaphysique, sont sous-tendues par un univers sensible qui se manifeste par un feuilletage de vestiges. Corporels, par la ruine physique des personnages, ils sont aussi paysagers, en inscrivant la perte dans les territoires où ces personnages se meuvent, et ils appellent enfin des paroles médiatrices de la part de gardiens de la mémoire qui en suggèrent une interprétation voilée ou en font deviner le sens.

The study Reflection of the October in Czech novels analyses several novels that originated in the twentieths of the twentieth century. Their authors, K.M. Čapek Chod, A.M. Tilschová and B. Benešová, reflect the change of social climate during the war and immediately after it. They connect the rise of the new State, a democratic Republic, with the notion of liberation from empty social norms connected with the world before the war. Characters of these novels are undergoing a catharsis that liberates them and opens new perspectives of life for them.

Studie Románová reflexe 28. října 1918 se zabývá několika českými romány, vzniklými ve 20. letech 20. století, jejichž autoři, K.M. Čapek Chod, A.M. Tilschová a B. Benešová reflektují změnu společenského klimatu za války a bezprostředně po ní. Proměnu spojují nejen se změnou společenského zřízení, se vznikem demokratické republiky, ale především s představou osvobození se od společenských norem, spojených se světem před válkou. Postavy těchto románů procházejí katarzí, která je osvobozuje a otvírá jim nové životní perspektivy.

Zdzisław Kamiński (1862-1920) był wśród polskich inżynierów górniczych przełomu XIX i XX wieku postacią nietuzinkową. W eseju ukazane są jego dokonania na polu poezji i literatury. Jest to obecnie pisarz zapomniany, jednak specjalistyczne bibliografie literackie wymieniają go jako współpracownika licznych czasopism i autora wierszy i nowel, poświęconych życiu górników. W eseju omówione zostały przede wszystkim dwa utwory: wspomnienia o pionierskim okresie działalności stowarzyszenia polskich studentów w Akademii Górniczej w Leoben oraz najsłynniejsza z jego nowel, zatytułowana W podziemiach. Akcja noweli luźno nawiązuje do tragicznej katastrofy w kopalni węgla kamiennego w Karwinie w 1894 roku.

Zdzisław Kamiński (1862-1920) was a unique character among the Polish mining engineers at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. This paper is an overview of his achievements in the fields of poetry and literature. Currently, he is a forgotten writer but specialist literary bibliographies feature him as an associate of numerous periodicals and an author of many poems and novels dedicated to the life of miners. The paper focuses primarily on two works. The first one is a memoir of the daily lives of Polish students at the Mining Academy in Leoben. The second one is the most famous of his novels entitled „W podziemiach” (“Underground”). The plot loosely relates to the real-life catastrophe in the coal mine which took place in Karwina in 1894.

The present study examines Saudek’s novel Diplomats (1921) from three perspectives: first, with regard to the (biographical) circumstances of its creation and publication; second, in the gradual development of its concrete form and fields of meaning; third, with an emphasis on the ways in which it was realized. The middle part of the study is the most dominant, evoking (in excerpts and comments) specific elements and constraints of Saudek’s novel structure — centred on the feminist intermingling of the story of Pygmalion with Christ’s (or apostolic) gestation, in accordance with a tendency of the period to bring together the national and universal horizons of salvation, and to confront the temporal connections and confrontations with stimuli from the outside world. To understand their present and future, the main protagonists of the novel are constructed as initiates in the art of graphology, able to identify the handwriting of famous writers. They believe, moreover, that they can recognize the ‘handwriting of history’: that is, the contours of what is to come. At the same time, they do not want to remain mere contemplative readers of this historical nature, and they go in search of someone who can change the course of the world to meet their ideal, namely that of a peaceful world. They find this in the figure of T. G. Masaryk.
