This article begins with the observation that most contemporary theories of justice pay no attention to the concept of need. And, as my main thesis, I shall argue that this is not correct. First of all (I) I shall explain the reasons for this theoretical deficit and I shall strictly distinguish (II) the concept of “need” from other concepts, such as “wish” and “drive”, which are routinely interpreted as its synonyms. Then (III) I shall offer a definition of need which is based on a complex conception of human personality. I shall introduce an enumeration of the various levels of the person by which various categories of need correspond with various objects. In the next step (IV) I shall tackle the question of whether in some regard it is necessary to treat needs as reasons for conduct. In this context I shall briefly present a historico-naturalistic account which aims to provide a grounding for judgements about questions of human needs. (V). Finally I shall deal with the social dimension of human needs and I will put forward reasons for the view that a theory of social justice should deal with the concept of need as its main theme (VI).

The article discusses the relationships between a sense of alienation and the use of mass media. This discussion was triggered by the idea of the media's significant power in the lives of individuals and their ability to meet fundamental needs. Given the fact that the level of a sense of alienation implies the level of citizens' socio-political activity, defining the role of the media focuses on their importance in the process of building a civil society.

The goal of the article is to analyse consumption as an active element of the economic process. The considerations aim to show that consumption not so much concludes but rather initiates the economic cycle. Consumption determines the situation of individuals by influencing their work performance, its rate and intellectual efficiency. The satisfaction of needs, collection and allocation of consumption resources leads to specific effects (in this indirect effect of consumption). The considerations highlight that the development of productive forces is not a step process. Rather, it should be smooth and spread over time.

This article concerns the values by which Generation Y are driven, as well as their life purposes, consumption-related behaviours, factors that have an impact on their choice of product, and differences between traditional purchases and ones made over the Internet. The sense of involvement in purchase, planning and satisfaction from the purchase were all analysed in this paper.

Social security is an element of the broadly understood state security system. A centralized approach to managing social needs does not take into account the local and regional differentiation of a population’s preferences, and, as a result, does not allocate resources in an optimal fashion. Decentralisation contributes to improving efficiency by way of more effective adaptation of public services to social needs, which is achieved by gaining a wider and deeper knowledge about the needs of local communities. Greater power of local authority bodies inspires innovative solutions and stimulates activity and competition between territorial units. It contributes to the rational allocation of resources at the disposal of local authorities, which leads to the conclusion that they are dominant with regard to exercising the social function of the state.

The survey carried out among university students has proved that they choose the forest as a place to spend their leisure time mostly in the spring (13.2%) and in the summer (21.2%). Students declare that they relaxed in the forest even a few times a week. Apart from recreation (walking - 61.6%, picking mushrooms - 37%), they engage in health improving activities, including sport (29.4%). Young people (especially town dwellers - 40.2%) decide go to the forest to get away from everyday routine (33.9%) in search of peace and quiet surroundings (40.5%). They do not have any specific preferences for the type of forest (50.1%), they feel good in mixed forests (31.9%), however. Since the forms of activity most frequently indicated by students are hiking and biking, they notice poor infrastructure of forest areas (lack of marked hiking routes - 14.3% and bicycle lanes - 12.5%). Respondents are familiar with the condition of forests in the proximity of the place of their residence (81.6%), considering it as basically good (75.9%). However, their knowledge of the natural environment protection forms and fire protection rules is definitely insufficient.

The article is an attempt at describing the relation between resilience and needs. It is based on the assumption that these are two sets of variables vital for harmonious development that resonate with each other in a peculiar manner. Resilience and human needs are both contextually and hereditarily conditioned, but the relation between them seems not necessarily a linear one. In adults, resilience might be a significant medium in the satisfaction of needs and even condition them. In children, however, the relation between these variables is different. A child is born with certain potential determining its level of resilience, but deprivation of their key needs, especially during first years, might simply impair their development or disturb its synchronisation. The main issue discussed in this article is the basis of the relation between resilience and the needs that must be satisfied at school. The article contains observations made while carrying out an experimental project that enables the youngest pupils to access and fulfil their multidimensional needs.

Municipal self-government as a territorial administrative unit responds in the provision of social services, mainly to the needs and possibilities of its inhabitants. However, it must perceive indicators that correspond to the individual needs and possibilities of the citizen, his opportunities to participate and his willingness to participate in their implementation.

Introduction: This paper focuses on providing social care to a close relative. It is crucial in social services. Design: qualitative methodology – method of semi-structured interviews. Methods: respondents were selected to satisfy specific criteria. Particularly, these criteria were the care of a close relative who was assigned level III or IV care benefits. Another criterion according to which we selected respondents was that the carer belonged to the age group in which a person is still usually economically active. The research sample consisted of 6 respondents. Results: Based on the data analysis, we created categories to present the content of semi-structured interviews. Needs focusing on the body carried over into maintenance of one’s own physical and mental health are: the need for safety, the need for acceptance, the need for acknowledgement and respect, and the need for self-fulfilment and perspective. Conclusions: It is important to identify the care of a close relative, the specifics and needs, in the interests of configuring effective management of medical, psychological and social care, and creation of a system of social protection.

This work describes theory of marketing, communication and communication mix in connection with non-profit organizations. Regional Health Authorities were given as an example. These organizations are public authorities in the sphere of public health protection. It was founded in 2003 by the law. However Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic was set as an official founder. The practical part of the work analyzes forms of communication used by the Regional Public Health Authorities. They are written, verbal and electronic communication. I explored when these forms are used, why are used, frequency of their use and their results. The public authorities are limited by the law very much (logically). Communication is one of the spheres that can be modified by the management of the Regional hygiene station. I think that goodwill (which building is connected with communication) of administrative authority is very important part of its existence. A good strategy of communication with the public is on of the ways how to reach it.

Considering the increased demographic aging and system changes in the welfare system in Poland, home care became one of the most important forms of taking care of disabled or elderly persons. Although the country is rooted in the idea of a nanny state, based on large institutions and providing minimum income, for a long time now family has been considered as the basic provider of informal care to the elderly. The aim of the present study is to give some insight into the resources of adult children providing care to their elderly, disabled parents. In order to acquire a comprehensive perception of the phenomenon, the authors chose an interpretavist paradigm and applied a phenomenographic method. 21 participants, aged 41–65, who were caregivers of their parents, took part in semi-structured interviews. Two main research problems were formulated: (1) How do the participants perceive their resources as caregivers of their elderly, disabled parents? (2) What kind of support related to the care of their parents do they consider essential? Results: The participants distinguish two main kinds of resources: internal (e.g. values, passions, feelings for parents, economic situation) and external (e.g. parents, family, friends, professionals, medical equipment and centers they have access to). The narratives of the participants also indicate a number of needs they experience. Implications for practice are discussed.

On this basis a theoretical profile of specific psychological requirements necessary for performing a given job is formed. This article constitutes such an analysis of the following job: an examiner of persons trying to obtain documents of eligibility for driving vehicles. The analysis was based on examinations conducted in selected voivodeship examination centres.

Materiał i metody: Dane pochodzą z wywiadu kwestionariuszowego przeprowadzonego wśród 500 pracowników w wieku 50+ (250 kobiet i 250 mężczyzn). Background: The article presents the results of evaluation of activities for older workers (50+). The aim of the study was the examination of older workers' opinions on activities undertaken in their companies related to maintaining older workers' employment. Material and Methods: Data is derived from the questionnaire survey conducted on 50+ employees (250 women and 250 men). Results: Almost one fifth of the employees admitted that they feel discriminated against in their company. Only a quarter of older workers declared that they had special offer of trainings, most of them concerned update trainings, expending knowledge (40% of responses). Only about one fifth of respondents admitted that they were encouraged to further their education. The smallest number of actions concerned health promotion. Conclusions: Older workers have different needs than younger ones, especially in the organization and working conditions. Activities related to the management of aging in Poland are still taken to a small extent. Disturbing is the fact that so few respondents admitted that in their companies, there were activities conducted concerning health promotion. From the point of view of working capacity and extending the retirement age, such initiatives should be carried out on a large scale among workers of all ages, with particular emphasis on the elderly. The paper is an introduction to the subsequent texts published herein. It presents reflections on the ways different generations perceive old age as good, expected stage of life. Expectations of the oldest generation regarding the vision of good ageing are compared to the ones shared by other generations, and differences were identified. These reflections were confronted with the most important ageing theories: theory of active ageing and theory of exclusion (withdrawal). The author pays particular attention to discrepancies between systemic activities aimed at supporting development in old age and actual needs of the oldest generation. He points out to individualism and subjective vision of one’s old age as a reference point for defining good ageing and creating the expected old age.

A number of studies indicate that proper education for sustainable development both in formal and informal sphere has been neglected and the implementation of the sustainable development principles is definitely insufficient and ineffective. The presence of the sustainable development contents in the education system results mainly from the interdisciplinary training pathway „Environmental education” realised in recent years. It is focused mainly on the environment and nature issues while the social and economic issues are poorly addressed if at all. A realistic implementation the sustainable development principles into practice can take place only through intensive training and information efforts in the sector of formal and informal education. The effectiveness of these efforts will be high on condition that they are subject to careful planning at each stage of their realisation.

Objectives: Human history is situated between good and evil. The reflection concerns the complex reality of meeting inhabitants’ needs in an institution being a nursing home. A stay at a nursing home is necessary in crisis situations with which a family or an individual cannot deal themselves. A nursing home is a home for its inhabitants who have specific requirements. For the purposes of the article, interviews were conducted with the personnel and management of two nursing homes for the elderly. Conclusions indicate the need for individualised help and care for residents. Material and methods: The method was interviewed by staff of two nursing homes Results: The employees themselves consider the lack of their own preparation for work with the elderly. Employees in interviews signal the needs of an individual work with residents: conversation, intimacy, attention Conclusions: Because is coming a new generation of older people we therefore need to change the education of caregivers and social workers taking into account soft competences in the context of the ethics of care (N. Piecuch Ewelina, In the thicket of children’s needs – educational significance of popular culture texts based onthe Świerszczyk children’s magazine. Culture – Society – Education no 2(16) 2019, Poznań 2019, pp. 115–132.Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300-0422. DOI 10.14746/kse.2019.16.8.Children raised in today’s globalised world face an enormous, globally available and diverse range of verbal and non-verbal messages from the outside every day. In the era of prevailing consumerism, this multitude of information creates new, artificial needs that bring chaos to the children’s world. Human needs, as presented by Maslow, starting with physiological needs, through the need of safety, belonging, love, respect, knowledge and recognition are being redefined and disorganised in common understanding. The following considerations outline the result of the analysis of the content and form of several popular culture texts selected from among all the texts available on the Polish market – the Świerszczyk magazine, aimed at children.
