Among numerous and distinguished author's and editorial works of Bogdan Suchodolski a particular value presents a publication in eight volumes entitled 'History of Polish Science' (including two biographical and bibliographic volumes), which was published in the years 1970-1992 on Professor's own initiative and edited by himself. This is the first synthesis of the history of science in Poland, from the beginning of the Middle Ages till the present time (to 1952). In the conception of the initiator and editor the work presents the development of scientific thought and achievements of the scholars in relation to national culture and in connexions with the trends in science in the world. 'History of Polish Science' is the work written by several dozen authors, representing different domains of the knowledge. Scientific, organizational and editorial patronate was possible by dint of History of Science and Technology Establishment of Polish Academy of Sciences (presently the Institute for the History of Science of Polish Academy of Sciences), which was managed by Bogdan Suchodolski.

In the second part of 1960's, UNESCO launched ‘Man and the Biosphere’, an international project focusing on the scientific aspects of environmental protection. 45 countries enlisted and established their National Committees. Thus, in Poland, ‘Man and Environment’ Committe at the Polish Academy of Science was born. The Committee proved itself to be a thriving centre and has many achievements recognised internationally. Quite recently prof. Stefan Kozłowski published an article entitled ‘The Assessment of Sustainable (Ecological) Development vs Transformation of the Polish Economy’. Professor Kozłowski talks to AURA about the state of environment in Poland.

W drugiej połowie lat 60. ubiegłego wieku UNESCO przygotowało międzynarodowy program „Człowiek i biosfera”, dotyczący naukowych podstaw ochrony środowiska. Do współpracy z tym programem zgłosiło się 45 państw, w których utworzono narodowe komitety programu. W Polsce jest nim Komitet „Człowiek i Środowisko” przy Prezydium PAN. Rozwija on ożywioną działalność i szczyci się dużym dorobkiem, cenionym w międzynarodowym środowisku naukowym. Ostatnio pod kierunkiem prof. Stefana Kozłowskiego przygotował ekspertyzę „Ocena zrównoważonego rozwoju (ekorozwoju) w procesie transformacji polskiej gospodarki”. Profesor rozmawia z AURĄ o stanie środowiska w Polsce.

Władysław Kretkowski was a mathematician and an engineer. He graduated École Imperiale des Ponts et Chauseés in Paris and also Sorbonne. He obtained PhD from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, he was a private docent at the Polytechnic and University in Lvov. The first chapter of the paper contains a short biography of Kretkowski, including information about his education and interests. The participation of Kretkowski in the January Uprising is described here as well. In the main Chapter, i.e. Chapter 2, mathematical achievements of Kretkowski in the theory of determinants and their applications in mathematical analysis and geometry is presented. The history of his academic career is also presented in this chapter. The last chapters are devoted to the mathematical contests announced by Kretkowski (especially the most famous one on the problem which is nowadays known as the Third Hubert Problem from 1900) and to the Dr Władysław Kretkowski Fundation.
