The microclimate of a room has an impact on human well-being, physical and mental health, on work productivity and the preservation of good health. Several dozen species of bacteria can live in buildings and more than 400 species of fungi (mainly Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Fusarium genus). The presented results are studies from different health department suggesting the desirability of systematic microbiological testing, evaluation of fungal pathogens, and involving staff, patients, walls, floors, furniture units (hardware, underwear), and air. However the problem is a lack of unified Polish standards, the classes of microbiological indoor air and the lack of harmonization of existing rules for air sampling to assess air fungal pollution in the health care setting.

Introduction and objective: This paper is concerned with the harmful impact of nitric oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) on humans. The objective was to determine which source of emission is the most urgent in terms of its reduction.Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge: In published epidemiological studies multiple notifications indicating the harmful impact of particulate matter on human health can be found. The harmful impact is underscored by the increase in the number of hospitalisations owing to diseases of respiratory and cardio-vascular systems, as well as by the rise in general fatality rate. The analysis of the PM impact on the human body is prompted by the fact that its detrimental effects are not clearly defined. Additionally, nitric oxides contribute to the increased number of exacerbations of respiratory disease and are a factor increasing susceptibility to development of local inflammation. Conclusions: The following study is meant to show that the air pollution which derives from vehicles (NOx and PM) has a significant impact on human health. This applies particularly to residents of cities and big towns. This issue has gained special importance in Poland. According to the data from the Central Statistical Office, the increasing number of vehicles in use and their age lead to increased emission of the pollutants considered.

The increasingly appreciated role of physical activity in societies concerned about their health requires proper assessment. The main tools for measuring the level of physical activity comprise some relevant questionnaires, among which the best known in the foreign literature is Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). However, this questionnaire is not yet available in the Polish language version. The following article presents one such attempt that has taken into account the Polish conditions and lifestyle following the guidelines of the GPAQ Guide, which meets the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The source text was translated into Polish and then a reverse translation was made involving four steps.

Organic compounds such as BTEX and PAHs are one of the most common contaminants in water system. These contaminants would take decades to degrade and they have harmful effects on human health (Qin et al. 2008). Several treatment methods have been developed to remove those contaminants from industrial wastewater. They include ion-exchange, filtration, adsorption and the use of various types of sorbents for example zeolites (Kibazohi et al. 2004, Mathur et al. 2007, Aivaliotiet al. 2012, Almeida et al. 2012). Natural clinoptilolite (Cp) from the Bystré deposit in Slovakia and zeolite Na-X synthesized from fly ash has been modified with a hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA) in amounts of 1.0 and 2.0 of external cation exchange capacity (ECEC) of the zeolites (Szala et al. 2013). The sorption properties of unmodified zeolites and organo-zeolites in terms of aqueous solutions of benzene, ethylobenzene, toluene, p-xylene (BTEX) and their mixtures as well as anthracene, naphthalene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (PAHs) and their mixtures at different concentrations were evaluated. The results showed that the modification of the zeolite Na-X and Cp with HDTMA improves the sorption properties. Modification in the amount of 1.0 ECEC proved to be the best in terms of p-xylene, anthracene, naphthalene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene. On the other hand benzene, ethylobenzene and toluene were adsorbed the most effectively by 2.0 ECEC modification of Na-X and Cp. Based on experimental data, the removal efficiencies for BTEX follows the order: p-xylene > toluene > benzene > ethylobenzene, for POHs: dibenzo[a,h]anthracene > benzo[a] pyrene > anthracene > naphthalene. P-xylene and naphtalene were adsorbed in the greatest quantity and benzene and anthracene in the lowest quantity from the mixtures of BTEX and PAHs, respectively. The sorption efficiency depends on the physicochemical properties of the organic compounds (dipole moment, molar mass, molecule structure and the time of the sorption process) as well as natural Cp and synthetic zeolite Na-X properties, such as Si/Al ratio, texture parameters and external cation exchange capacity. With an increasing concentration of the hydrocarbons in the solution the sorption capacity increases (Szala et al. 2015). Natural Cp is a better sorbent than synthetic zeolite Na-X in case of BTEX sorption, while PAHs are adsorbed more effectively by zeolite Na-X and its modifications. The mechanism of the sorption consists on the dissolving of the organic compounds into the organic layer of the surfactant (on the zeolites’ surface) as well as on the organic compounds’ penetration into the mesopores.

Spices and medicinal herbs is an important route for human exposure to toxic metals. This study determined total concentrations of heavy metals and risk assessment of ten types of herbs used in cooking, spices and medicinal plants available in local markets of Babylon province/Iraq. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Co, As, Cd, Cr and Hg were estimated by ICP/Mass to identify toxic metals in the used portion of selected spices and medicinal plants. The average concentrations of these elements were within the limits allowed by the WHO. Culinary herbs and spices contained significantly Cu˃Ni˃Zn˃Pb˃Co˃As˃Cd˃Cr˃Hg. However, the concentrations of copper, zinc and nickel, respectively, were higher in all herbal samples. The study recorded the highest concentrations in the aerial parts of plants from the total elemental content of Thymus vulgaris leaves (109.4 μg•g-1). and barks of Cinnamomum verum was recorded (43 μg•g-1). Non-carcinogenic risks and estimated daily consumption of these herbs were assessed on the basis of the target hazard quotient (THQ) and Hazard Index (HI). THQ values for individual minerals were more than one indicating health risks for nickel (15.5) Mentha verticillata leaves, (12.3) for Matricaria chamomilla, other metals Cu, Co, Pb and Zn were recorded THQ˃1 which considered unsafe for human consumption. The mean Hazard Index (HI) for the nine metal elements is ˃1 for all plants except Zingiber officinale, indicating that there are non-carcinogenic risks from these nine elements. this study provides a scientific basis to guide the safe consumption of certain culinary herbs and spices, it suggest potential health concerns for consumers of these products on a daily basis over a prolonged life span.

Change in the environment is inevitable and rapid. The cause of the change could be a natural phenomena or life processes. Human activity such as development of agriculture and technology which give rise to widespread industrialization has led to potentially changing environment as a result of pollution culminating in the release of harmful substances such as Agricultural waste, industrial waste, metal scraps, sewage, microbial concentration, oil spills etc. into the soil, water or air. Human environmental intervention as in the construction of dams and diversion of rivers is another cause of change in the environment. Other causes are ozone depletion, Acid rain and acid mine drainage etc. The impact of the changing environment on human health identified in this paper seek to explore the causes of environmental change, effect of human activities on causes of environmental change and effect of changing environment on human health. The findings identified some effects of human activities as outbreaks of infectious diseases leading to human incapacitation and death in severe cases, damage genetic material leading to heritable genetic disorders, malnourishment as a result of wiping out of plants and animal life. Others are skin cancer, reduction of life expectancy etc. some recommendation were made which are Environmental conservation measures, Governments and Non-governmental organizations educating the citizenry.

Background. Engaging in health-related behaviours is conditioned by many factors, including psychological and social ones. The extent to which it is done is also determined by gender and age. Health-related activity has specific and, presumably, different meanings at different stages of adulthood, which is associated with implementing by people roles and tasks typical of a given period of life. The study aimed to determine the specifics of the healthrelated behaviour in middle and late adulthood. Material and methods. The research was conducted on a group of 285 people, including 154 persons in middle adulthood, i.e. 40-58 years old (M = 45.05, SD = 3.63) - 77 women and 77 men, and 130 in late adulthood, i.e. 61-88 years old (M = 71.32 SD = 5.81) - 70 women and 60 men. The Health Behaviour Inventory by Z. Juczyński (2001) was used to measure health-related behaviours. The tool enabled determining the overall level of health-related behaviours and four selected categories, i.e. healthy eating habits, preventive behaviours, health-related practices and positive mental attitudes. Results. The results indicate that women exhibit a higher level of health-related behaviours when compared to men (regardless of age), which is also evidenced in women in late adulthood when compared to those in middle adulthood. The extent of health-related behaviours in specific categories was also compared between groups. Functions of healthrelated behaviours were discussed with regard to their specifics of people’s roles performed in society as well as the implementation of the development tasks typical of particular stages of adulthood. Conclusions. It is recommended to adjust prevention and health promotion programmes to particular periods of human development and gender.

Recent literature data suggests that parasitic and fungal diseases, which pose a threat to both human and animal health, remain a clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Attention is increasingly paid to the role played by natural microbiota in maintaining homeostasis in humans. A particular emphasis is placed on the possibility of manipulating the human microbiota (permanent, transient, pathogenic) and macrobiota (e.g., Trichuris suis) to support the treatment of selected diseases such as Crohn’s disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. Emphasis is placed on important medical species whose infections not only impair health but can also be life threatening, such as Plasmodium falciparum, Echinococcus multilocularis and Baylisascaris procyonis, which expand into areas which have so far been uninhabited. This article also presents the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of opportunistic parasitoses imported from the tropics, which spread across large groups of people through human-to-human transmission (Enterobius vermicularis, Sarcoptes scabiei). It also discusses the problem of environmentally-conditioned parasitoses, particularly their etiological factors associated with food contaminated with invasive forms (Trichinella sp., Toxoplasma gondii). The analysis also concerns the presence of developmental forms of geohelminths (Toxocara sp.) and ectoparasites (ticks), which are vectors of serious human diseases (Lyme borreliosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis), in the environment. Mycological topics contains rare cases of mycoses environmentally conditioned (CNS aspergillosis) and transmissions of these pathogens in a population of hospitalized individuals, as well as seeking new methods used to treat mycoses.
