Element-based ecological and human health risk assessment in a lagoon system in a densely populated basin

This study analysed the ecological deterioration and health risk in sediment samples taken from Dalyan and Poyraz Lagoons in the Karacabey floodplain of Turkey, which is under pressure from agriculture, industry and settlement activities. Multi-element analyses were performed with ICP-MS on the surface and core sediment samples from the lagoons. Total organic carbon, chlorophyll degradation products and carbonate analyses were performed to determine the transport and illuviation dynamics of the elements. While Pb and Zn showed moderate enrichment at some sampling points, no enrichment of the other elements was detected. According to ecological risk analysis data, Cd and Hg posed a moderate ecological risk at some sampling points. The modified hazard quotient data indicated very high contamination of Ni, a high level of As contamination and significant Cr contamination. A carcinogenic health risk was detected from Ni, Cr and As due to the lithological characteristics of the basin. It was concluded that the lithological characteristics, the agricultural and mining activities carried out in the Susurluk Basin – which is drained by Koca Stream – and domestic and industrial waste contributed to the higher element concentrations in the Karacabey floodplain.

Osoby niepełnosprawne ruchowo, poruszając się w przestrzeni miasta, napotykają na wiele barier architektonicznych, które utrudniają im funkcjonowanie i wpływają na brak podejmowania aktywności, m.in. zawodowej. Celem pracy dyplomowej, na podstawie której opiera się niniejszy artykuł, była ocena przystosowania wybranego obszaru Lublina (istotnego z punktu widzenia mieszkańców) do potrzeb osób niepełnosprawnych ruchowo. Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej z nich zostały omówione przykładowe opracowania poświęcone tematowi geografii niepełnosprawności i wpływu barier architektonicznych na funkcjonowanie osób niepełnosprawnych w przestrzeni miasta. Druga część artykułu zawiera informacje dotyczące pozyskanych danych w ramach inwentaryzacji, a także analizy przestrzenne, na podstawie których zostały opracowane mapy gęstości obiektów, umożliwiające wskazanie stref przystosowanych i nieprzystosowanych do potrzeb osób niepełnosprawnych ruchowo.

People with physical disabilities will encounter many architectural barriers when moving around the city, which make it difficult for them to function and influence their lack of activity, including professional activity. The aim of the diploma thesis, on the basis of which this article is based, was to assess the adaptation of the selected area of Lublin (important from the point of view of residents) to the needs of people with physical disabilities. The article consists of two parts. The first of them discussed exemplary studies on the geography of disability and the influence of architectural barriers on the functioning of disabled people in the city space. The second part of the article contains information on the data obtained during the inventory, as well as spatial analysis, on the basis of which density maps of objects have been prepared, allowing to identify zones adapted and not adapted to the needs of people with physical disabilities.

Since the Act on Nature and Landscape Protection (No. 114/1992 Coll. - ZOPK) which introduced the institute of significant landscape elements (SLE) protection, including the SLE floodplain, entered into force, there have not been sufficient tools developed for its practical implementation. Floodplains, however, represent a landscape element that is difficult to identify in the territory and at the same time is threatened by the development and use of the territory. The aim of the project "Practical tools for planning and protection of the SLE floodplain”, which was implemented in 2020-2023 with the financial participation of the Czech Technology Agency within the "Environment for Life Programme”, was to fill in the gap in the current insufficient planning practice, protection and use of the SLE floodplain. A floodplain determination procedure to be applied by the nature protection authorities (NPAs) was developed and validated. The procedure was complemented by a proposal for categorizing floodplains and identifying their functions, which is crucial for NPA decision-making processes. As a result, NPAs and other governmental authorities were provided by spatial data and methodologies to facilitate the decision-making process in the territory and also to implement the floodplain areas protection in spatial planning. Od účinnosti zákona o ochraně přírody a krajiny (č. 114/1992 Sb. – ZOPK), ve kterém byl zaveden institut ochrany významných krajinných prvků (VKP) včetně VKP údolní niva, nebyly zpracovány dostatečné nástroje k jejich praktické ochraně. Údolní nivy jsou přitom krajinným prvkem, který je v území obtížně identifikovatelný a současně je ohrožován rozvojem a využíváním jeho území. Cílem projektu „Praktické nástroje pro plánování a ochranu VKP údolní niva“, který byl realizován v letech 2020–2023 za finanční spoluúčasti Technologické agentury ČR v rámci programu „Prostředí pro život“, bylo zaplnit mezeru v dosavadním nedostatečném plánování, ochraně a využívání VKP údolní niva. Byl vytvořen a ověřen postup vymezování niv aplikovatelný v praxi orgánů ochrany přírody (OOP). Postup byl doplněn o návrh kategorizace údolních niv a identifikaci jejich funkcí, které jsou klíčové pro rozhodování OOP. Výsledkem jsou prostorová data a metodiky pro OOP a další orgány státní správy pro rozhodování v území a také pro uplatnění ochrany území VKP údolní niva v územním plánování.
