This paper presents a model for the reconstruction of the actual meaning of interlingual lacunas. Lacunas as lexical units, present in one culture and absent in another, that hinder the reception of texts and cause difficulties in translation. The clarification of their meaning is possible by analysing the discursive contexts and the discourse fragments in which they occur. Based on the discourse paradigm, a model for the reconstruction of the actual meaning has been developed that consists of individual stages of analysis. According to the assumptions of the proposed model, the case study reconstructs the actual meaning of the lacuna Drachenfutter in German.

Despite the ambiguity of the term discourse in German studies on discourse, a tendency is visible to specify the term for the purposes of particular research studies. These issues are addressed in the opening sections of the article. The article also discusses the relation between text and discourse, and reaches the conclusion stating that discourse linguistics is more than merely an extension of text linguistics, as both phenomena, i.e., text and discourse display a difference in quality. A question is also raised about the place of text in various trends of research on discourse. Particular schools/research groups show diversity in terms of theoretical conceptions, research methods, as well as in relation to the reception of Foucault’s ideas. Texts are in them undoubtedly an element of continuing discourse in the sense of corpus, in discourse analysis itself, however, researchers frequently focus only on selected linguistic aspects, rarely relying on text linguistics tools. The closing sections present a few suggestions within text-oriented discourse linguistics, which is understood here as a trend of the evolutionary character.

Euphemisms and dysphemisms are linguistic means that are generally used to make something accordingly more beautiful, obscure it or devalue it. However, if one looks at different texts or even discourses, it can be seen that euphemistic and dysphemic expressions can be assigned specific functions and that this form of formulation is also based on different motivations. These are described in detail in the articles from the anthology presented here.

The author of this article showed the differences between two baroque ego-documents of prominent politicians: the ‘Travel Diary’ of Pylyp Orlyk, hetman of Ukraine and ‘Diaries. Memories ’of Francis II Rákóczi, Prince of Transylvania. In the article is shown the family and love life of both personas. An interesting point of Rákóczi’s ego-documents is also his love for Elżbieta Sieniawska, carefully hidden in the pages of his ego-documents.

Road to Exclusion – Neoliberal Discourse on Privatization of Schools and School Canteens in Warsaw The article deals with social influence of neoliberal discourse on privatization of schools and school canteens in Warsaw. In the light of social analysis of discourse, the term means social activities situated in the area designated by ‘understanding, communicating and interpersonal interactions, where the above mentioned phenomena are being a part of a wider context constituted by social and cultural structures and processes’. In Teun A. van Dijk’s understanding of the term, a discursive social activity takes place, when ‘the language users take part in communication not only as entities, but also as members of various groups, institutions and cultures’, whereas through their statements they create, they confirm or question the social and political structures and institutions. The city council and district councils are places where the speech not only mirrors relations of social ascendancy (the councilors are always first to speak before the inhabitants), but also this ascendancy is being ‘performed’ by ‘constituting’ their recipient at the moment of enunciation (for example the figure of ‘homo sovieticus’ often mentioned by the councilors). Councils are places, where the enuncia- ted social structure mentions and preserves the ascendant’s position. The aim of the article was to show how some of the macro-scaled problems (neo-liberalism, crisis of the representative’s democracy) reveal its violent nature in the micro-scale (Warsaw councilors’ policy towards schools and school canteens).

The article presents the analysis of two speeches given by Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss, who is so far the most recognisable Irish drag queen. Apart from being a drag queen, Rory O’Neill is also a political activist whose performances were part of the campaign before the referendum concerning the 34th Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland. In the analysis both these aspects of the speaker’s identity are taken into consideration. Although the analysis is mostly linguistic, it also considers extralinguistic aspects of communication, e.g. the performer’s appearance on stage, as contextual elements are essential in sociolinguistic contexts. Thus, the analysis draws from the theoretical background focused on political discourse and the language used by drag queens to a detailed account of the two speeches in order discuss them in relation to the standards of both a drag performance and a political speech.

This critical essay describes three contemporary discourses which threaten the essential principles of educational sciences to such a degree that it is possible to start talking about the end of educational sciences, albeit with a hint of exaggeration. The end of educational sciences is understood to herald a change in educational constants and their replacement with different elements. We understand discourse as a way of perception in a given fi eld at a given time which is mirrored both in language and in the framing of debates in the fi eld. We progressively analyse three discourses (evidence-based discourse, discourse of practical research and technological discourse) and describe in detail the individual concepts and thoughts from which the discourses stem. The essay concludes with a summary of infl uences of the described discourses and also with showing how the discourses can replace some educational concepts, if the fi eld is not consolidated.

The article discusses the relation between lexicography and ideology. It proves that the monolingual Polish language dictionaries are designed according to the ideology of gender and that gender stereotypes can take different forms in dictionaries. The dictionaries not only reflect, but also preserve social and cultural values and rules. The analysis leads to the question, how should the ideology of gender be presented in the future, in order to avoid stereotyping?

During the research in Norway, our Polish-Norwegian team encountered a social factwhich inspired us to create a separate research field in the project. Many intervieweesmentioned the name of The Child Welfare Service of Norway: Barnevernet. The majorityof opinions about this service were negative – both in the respondents’ narratives and onthe internet forums for the Polish migrants (‘mojanorwegia’) or social network fan pages(Polacy w Stavanger, Polacy w Norwegii). There are vividly negative emotions present inthe Poles’ statements about raising children in Norway, and the fear of Barnevernet is particularlyapparent. It was this ‘fear’ that triggered the research presented in this article. Westarted to look for its presence in both the Polish public reality and in the private sphere. We decided to use a critical discourse analysis to discover communication mechanismswhich have influenced the shape of the Polish attitude towards Barnevernet.

Discourse is a term that is used increasingly both in everyday language and in the terminology ofvarious scientific disciplines. In everyday use it is usually a synonym for conversation or discussionon a topic, in one place or among representatives of a group. The meaning of the term discourse in scientific usage is much more complicated, especially since discourse is an analytical category of different sciences (e.g. sociology, linguistics, literary studies, anthropology, etc.) and its understanding varies depending on the respective discipline. Also within a discipline such as linguistics, which is the focus of the considerations, there are many ways of looking at the discourse. The focus of this article is the monograph by Czachur, published in 2020, which aims to develop discourse linguistics as a research program that has an integrative character. In his remarks, Czachur concentrates on showing how linguistics has prepared itself for the category of discourse by focusing on selected linguists and language philosophers and presenting their language models as well as discussing the achievements of structuralism and the process of overcoming it. Against this background, the discourse is presented as an object of research. In this context, Michel Foucault‘s assumptions are discussed. The author also presents selected approaches to discourse analysis (including those by Jäger, Witosz, Spitzmüller / Warnke and Piekot) and shows what the researchers aimed at with their concepts and how they interpret the discourse for their own research goals. This is followed by the idea of discourse linguistics as an integrating research program. Theoretical and methodological assumptions are reflected upon and a case study is presented in which the research procedure is used. The monograph brings new and interesting insights and represents a new, methodologically and theoretically well-founded program of discourse linguistics.

This article focuses on social media i.e. it presents the analysis of Twitter posts written by Polish youth organisations of parties represented in the Polish parliament. Moreover, the article explores the question of the discursive status and discursive performance of Europe / the European Union. In doing so, a discourse-linguistic perspective is pursued; the investigation is oriented towards the discourse-linguistic topos concept. The article aims at both identifying the dominant topos in the analysed section of the discourse on Europe and discussing its linguistic realisation.

The main purpose of the present paper is to identify the morphosyntactic and discourse errors of language learners at sentence and essay levels. To achieve this end, a total number of 50 Iranian university students were selected to participate in the study. Two types of test were administrated to the participants: a recognition test and a production test. In the former, the participants were asked to read 42 English sentences and identify the erroneous morphosyntactic forms; and in the latter, they were required to translate 14 Persian sentences into English and also write a two paragraph essay. Using Ferris’ (2002) model, the results indicated that there was a direct relationship between the number of errors and the participants’ level of proficiency. The results also revealed statistically significant differences between error identification and error production of both freshmen and seniors Iranian English language learners.

This article focuses on the history of the Polish educational and scientific discourse. The paper examines Polish texts by Józef Czech — Euklidesa początków jeometryi xsiąg ośmioro, to iest sześć pierwszych, jedenasta i dwunasta z dodanemi przypisami i trygonometrią dla pozytku młodzi akademickiey (Euclid’s six books on geometry, that is the first six books, the eleventh book and the twelfth book with notes and geometry for the benefit of university youth, 1807) and by Ignacy Zaborowski — Jeometria praktyczna (Practical geometry, 1786). As well as a study on the right of silence with regard to written texts, this paper also investigates the two cases in terms of icons and indices: a text may be indexical of a basic human right, and then may become an icon of that right. The European Court of Human Rights considers the particular section of the relevant statute as an icon of the "regulatory regime".
