A model turbine for low-head applications, utilizing a novel flowpath design, was designed and built to meet specific design assumptions formulated for low-output hydraulic power plant design. Power-output and cavitation testing has been carried out, and the universal characteristic for the turbine obtained. The innovative design has been patented and is available as an offer for low-output hydraulic power installations. The design possesses significant advantages - with regard to turbine construction, operation, and emplacement - over the standart designs currently offered by leading world manufacturers. On the basis of velocity fields determined to exist within the rotor chamber of the turbine, a representative optimization procedure has been applied to rotor parameters. The procedure is here proposed as an effective and practical method for optimizing the performance of new rotor designs, as well as existing rotors under actual operating conditions.

Due to the pragmatic orientation and continuation of modernist artistic solutions, it is difficult to find explicit Socialist Realist traits in the Polish design of that time, especially as the term “Socialist Realist design” remains undefined. Design that is neutral in form can be linked to the doctrine on the level of the socialist concept, aiming at consequent changes in the socialist forms of life. However, the idea of socially oriented design combined with modernization unquestionably had its roots in the broadly understood avant-garde movements. We should not treat this phenomenon as an ideological contradiction. In spite of their avant- -garde pre-war provenance, many ideas were (successfully) put into practice at that time as the design of life for a better tomorrow of the egalitarian (socialist) society.

W powszechnym dyskursie dominuje jednoznaczne przeciwstawienie modernizmu socrealizmowi zakorzenione w odwilżowym micie przełomu 1956 roku. Problem ten zaś wymaga większego niuansowania, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do designu.

Składowe tych przestrzeni to elementy infrastruktury miejskiej: drogi, chodniki, zieleń miejska i determinujące tę przestrzeń elementy funkcjonalnego wyposażenia, potocznie nazywane małą architekturą.

The problems of it is actual another interesting dimension of the art of reality, which is associated with the Gothic Revival. The Gothic Revival – it is not Gothic at all, as other eclectic styles. It is a cultural metaphor of imitation of Gothic tradition. The verticality by itself, like an arrow slits – all this becomes so, as we say, image, denies represent classical facade. Neorussion or Byzantine style, Neorenaissance were associated with ethnic tradition, with regeneration of ethnic culture. Ethnic culture becomes the subject of professional interests. If classicism can not see national traditions, everywhere simply and clearly put axis, that are formed by spatial syntagms, so the eclecticism fueles the interest to the national roots. We can see a certain nostalgia for our own ‟golden age”. That is, if we return to reflexive interpretations of culture, as it was mentioned above, it could be argued that it polystyle shows permanent deployment of metaphysical searches that already tend to aplently reality, to polycentrism, the center (axis) in the composition as the sole source of unity of the whole has become impossible. Here is felt a certain pluralism and a certain ‟postmodern” if it can be called postmodern, though postmodernism appears as nomination is in the middle of the XXth century

The article discusses assumptions for a prototype test stand designed for testing rotors in the conditions of work at their nominal speed, in particular gyrocopter and helicopter rotors. In the work presents an overview of similar solutions of test stand presented in the available literature and solutions proposed by companies, such as Swangate International or Luftfahrttechnik GmbH. Beyond these solutions the article also contains test stand used so far at the Institute of Aviation, these solutions were prepared for testing one type of rotor (for example: only for gyroplane rotors). The article provides the steps of designing a new test stand, which one of the basic assumptions is that it will be a universal test stand, giving the possibility to test different types of rotors. The article discusses two concepts of the stand with electric engine as a drive, gives the advantages and disadvantages of each concept, and indicates the selected solution. In addition to design and applied drive solution of the stand, the measuring part and data acquisition were also discussed. Moreover, the article focus on the advantages of rotor testing using the presented solution, as well as problems encountered during tests, in particular related to construction free vibrations and resonance. Vibration and resonance of the test stand are very important aspect of the entire design process, because it affects the quality and safety of the tests.

The article presents parametric analysis regarding the impact of subgrade and backfill stiffness on values and distribution of bending moments in the structural elements of a small integral box bridge made of cast in situ reinforced concrete. The analyzed parameters are the modulus of subgrade reaction under and behind the bridge structure (kv kh). At the beginning, the author presents the integral box bridge and selected parts of the bridge design. In particular, the author focuses on the method of modeling of the subgrade stiffness parameters under and behind the bridge structure, as well as their impact on the values and distribution of bending moments in the bridge structural elements. The bridge was designed by the author and built on the M9 motorway between the towns of Waterford and Kilcullen in Ireland. In conclusions, the author shares his knowledge and experience relating to the design of small integral bridges and culverts and puts forward recommendations as to further research on these type of structures in Poland.

When grinding high demands are usually placed on the geometrical tolerances of the workpiece surface. For this reason, the spindles of the grinding machines are normally designed with requirements for a minimum position change of the grinding disks due to external forces and bending moments. The design theory of these spindles is relatively well elaborated, as it represents the most frequently used solution in practice. However, there are also cases where it is necessary to grind some hard-to-reach areas, using a great ejection of the spindle. In these cases, it is necessary to reassess the required geometrical tolerances with regard to its necessity to comply with the minimal changes in the position of the grinding discs due to the great ejection. Where it is necessary to maintain high geometrical tolerances, it is necessary to ensure a greater rigidity of the spindle. This rigidity is usually improved by increasing its diameter. By doing this we also increase the weight of the spindle that is heavily ejected, and thus its deformation can occur due to gravity forces. That is why it is necessary to analyse the deflection of the spindle depending on its ejection in the course of its design. In the case we increase the diameter of the grinder spindle the possible applicable grinding disc diameter decreases, due to the growing size of its housing. Any grinding of hard-to-reach surfaces is therefore done in particular to improve the quality of the surface with low requirements on the geometrical tolerances. This article deals with the design patterns for a spindle used in axial grinding for inner rotating surfaces. The article contains a spindle design solution and an analysis of its deflections, depending on its ejection, and the size of the passive forces.

Adequate knowledge in the areas of intelligent coordinate metrology and design are important presuppositions to achieve waste free production and low costs of manufacturing with higher quality and accuracy at the same time. This is of extreme importance in present time of worldwide international competition in industry and production and at the same time increasingly higher costs of energy and raw material. The prescription and consumption of material and energy to achieve the necessary and required workpiece accuracy in series manufacturing depends to a great extent from the (geometrical) workpiece tolerances of any kind (roughness, form, positional, dimensional) which are prescribed for the production and the fulfillment of these tolerances and therefore for the function of the produced workpieces and their fitness for practical application and none the less of the economy of production altogether. This requirement is of great importance at the time being which is characterized as described above.

Liczne zalety laserów półprzewodnikowych dużej mocy powodują, że znajdują one coraz szersze zastosowanie zarówno jako bezpośrednie źródła promieniowania quasi-spójnego, jak i pompy optyczne służące do wzbudzania laserów na ciele stałym. W referacie przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań nad szerokokontaktowymi laserami SCH z falowodem grzbietowym, emitującym w paśmie 808 nm. Lasery te wytwarzane były z heterostruktur AlGaAs/GaAs otrzymywanych metodą MO CVD i zawierających pojedynczą studnię kwantową (SQW) lub wielokrotne studnie kwantowe (MQW).

High power semiconductor lasers find continually increasing applications both as direct sources of quasi-coherent light beams and as optical pumps for solid state lasers. In the paper we present some selected results attained in the course of the work on development of 808 nm, high power broad-contact SCH lasers with a ridge-waveguide structure. The lasers were fabricated from MO CVD grown AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures that comprised either single-(SQW) or multi- (MQW) quantum wells. Accordingly, they were mounted in form of single chips and 10 mm long bars on copper heat sinks. Selected topics related to laser design and fabrication, as well as some properties of the produced devices are described.

Purpose: of this paper is to provide the joint the behavior caused by the material, pre-stress, bonding thickness and the tongue length. Design/methodology/approach: A simple but effective design can considerably improve the joint strength of thick adhesive composite joints. The joint under investigation consists of thick woven E-glass/vinyl ester laminates joined together with tongue and groove geometry. Longitudinal tensile loads were applied to the joints, resulting in large concentrated shear and peel stresses near the free edges of bondlines. Findings: The new design intends to reduce the adhesive peel stress by application compressive pre-stress on the free edges of bondlines and thus leads to an increase of joint strength. The bonding clearances, tongue length, pre-stress and using different tongue made of steel/aluminum have an effect on the joint strength. The tests further confirm that joint strength increases significantly by applying the transverse pre-stress. There is a 2 times increment on the joint strength by applying pre-stress on the edge of tongue and groove geometry. Practical implications: Selection of Steel SAE-235 insert materials and selection of Aluminum 5083 insert materials 1.7 times and 1.2 times increased the joint strength compared with the selection of composite insert materials, respectively. Originality/value: The results indicate that the better quality joint can be obtained by selecting the steel as an insert.

Dom to nasz świat i kąt w przestrzeni. Istotną rewolucję w budowaniu przestrzeni mieszkalnych spowodowały instalacje hydrauliczne i kanalizacja miast, centralna dystrybucja prądu elektrycznego, gazu i ciepła, a także windy.

A house: this idea is the most basic experience of any man and it is not at all directly translated to architecture. A house can be a driver's cockpit, a cabin at the ship or a rock cave. The house is our world and our own place in space. As an architectural category it changed significantly: in the constructed form above all in the sense of technological equipment. Peasants' cottages in the 16th century had hearths or cooking stoves only in the main room and no heating in the remaining part of the house. The townsfolk lived differently: in long, two-storey narrow buildings with cellars and empty rooms, where the main piece of furniture was a chair. Drawers used for storing things appeared originally in churches and were only later adapted for private houses. A significant revolution in constructing residential premises was introduced by plumbing installations and sewage systems in cities, central distribution of electricity, gas and heating as well as elevators. The consequences of changes brought about by the information society to the image of residential areas will certainly be just as important.

To achieve a higher reconfigurability of machine tools, the Institute for Machine Tools at the University of Stuttgart developed a new spindle module in cooperation with the company INDEX-Werke GmbH & Co. KG (Esslingen, Germany) within the framework of a transfer project (TFB59), supported by the DFG. This spindle module enables the operator to exchange the spindle in clearly less time and hence represents an important device for the reconfigurability of machine tools. This paper describes important steps in the development and design of the new machine module.

The task of designing a complex arifact can be thought of as reasoning within a space of alternatives. This reasoning shares the large-scale structure of logical proof: the elucidation of information as the design is fleshed out, and hypotechnical reasoning concerning the consequences of various possible design decisions, for example. However, design reasoning differs from the kind of reasoning usually considered by logicians because it invo;ves reasoning with multiple representations of information, and with complex rationale and goal structures. We describe an architecture for bulding applications to support design reasoning which generalizes traditional nations of proff to the case of real-world problem solving, including design reasoning.

The lifting surface model is widely used in screw propeller design and analysis applications. It serves as a reliable tool for determination of the propeller blade mean line and pitch distribution. The main idea of this application was to determine the blade shape that would satisfy the kinematic boundary condition on its surface with the prescribed bound circulation distribution over it. In this paper a simplified lifting surface method is presented – in which the 3D task for the entire blade is replaced by a set of 2D tasks for subsequent blade section profiles.
