In this paper, we recall the basic features of the CospanSpan(Graph) algebra for the compositional description of reconfigurable hierarchical networks. In particular, we focus on compositionality and on the possibility of describing the interactions among physical/biological systems, using a parallel with communication operation not considered in the usual Kleene’s algebra. As a novel application, we give a complete compositional description in Span(Graph) of a simplified version of the heart system.

In the paper we discuss the problem of limitations of freedom in mathematics and search for criteria which would differentiate the new concepts stemming from the historical ones from the new concepts that have opened unexpected ways of thinking and reasoning. We also investigate the emergence of category theory (CT) and its origins. In particular we explore the origins of the term functor and present the strong evidence that Eilenberg and Carnap could have learned the term from Kotarbiński and Tarski.

This article presents a brief introduction of animal studies and proposes how questions relevant to the discipline may be applicable to the study of video games. It considers video games as texts of popular culture and works of fiction which offer themselves to analysis and interpretation and may reveal socially relevant insights. The article proposes two complementing sets of categories to systematize the presence of animals in video games, based on function (enemy, background, hero, companion, tool) and ontology (actual representation, legendary, extrapolation, hybrid). Finally, the article outlines paths for researches in the field of HAS to follow in the study of video games.

Artykuł pokrótce przedstawia animal studies jako dyscyplinę badawczą oraz sugeruje, w jaki sposób rozpatrywane w jej obrębie zagadnienia mogą odnaleźć zastosowanie w studiach nad grami wideo, w tym tekście są pojmowanymi jako fikcja oraz tekst kultury masowej. Ich analiza i interpretacja mają potencjał, by wykazać szereg istotnych społecznie kwestii. W pracy zaproponowano dwie kategorie pozwalające usystematyzować występujące w grach wideo zwierzęta na podstawie ich funkcji (przeciwnik, tło, bohater, towarzysz, narzędzie) oraz ontologii (reprezentacja, zwierzę legendarne, ekstrapolacja, hybryda). Ostatnia część sugeruje, jakie elementy tematyki poruszanej w grach mogą stanowić obszary zainteresowania badaczy zajmujących się studiami nad zwierzętami.

Aim. In his Kierkegaardian studies Jean Wahl states that there is a fundamental convergence between Plato and Søren Kierkegaard focused on the notions of identity and difference. Wahl suggests a sort of transposition of platonic metaphysics into the sphere of personal subjectivity. This paper intends to explain this passage from the same to the other from Plato to Kierkegaard. Concept. The article explains the passage from the same to the other from Plato to Kierkegaard. In both authors, the categories of being or not being, identity and difference, unity and multiplicity, becoming and rest explain the dynamic nature of the real. Results and conclusion. In both authors, the categories mensioned above explain the dynamic nature of the real. But while Plato applies these categories to the inteligibile word, Kierkegaard applies them to individual freedom, which supports reality as a whole. Cognitive value. Both searches lead to a single speculative answer and culminate in the same metaphysical categorisation, which applies analogously to everything real. Indeed, being and non-being, identity and difference, oneness and otherness, rest and becoming, explain the dialectic, intensive and relational dynamism of entia. At the same time, they essentially determine the power of human existence, infinitely possible and forever depending on the absolute.

The paper presents methods of classification of processed cheeses, available in the world. The main directions of changes in the processed cheese technology refer to the possibility of melting cheese using raw materials which are easy to obtain and which utilize techniques enabling to control the functional properties of the final products. Moreover, the difference between the processed cheese and processed cheese analogue was explained. The directions of the future development of processed cheese in the segment of the functional food were described.

The main topics discussed in the article include: criteria developed for the evaluation of artistic facts (objects and events); the clash of conflicting traditions of thinking about art, for example perceiving it as an area of creative freedom; emphasis put on the utilitarian and decorative features of art; and socially engaged art. The discussion revolves around the category of helplessness that one has to feel in the face of such a multitude of theoretical approaches to art and blurred boundaries of what belongs in the concept of art. This includes anaesthetics which, next to pragmatic aesthetics, serves as a turning point in the discourse on art that constantly calls for redefining the identification fields for selected manifestations of art in social reality.

W pracy przedstawiono ogólną procedurę tworzenia rankingów zbioru obiektów przy relacji preferencji bazującej na dowolnej funkcji rankingowej. Analizę możliwych do wykorzystania funkcji rankingowych rozpoczęto od pokazania fundamentalnych wad powszechnie stosowanych funkcji w postaci sumy ważonej. Jako szczególny przypadek procedury rankingowej w przestrzeni z relacją zaproponowano procedurę bazującą na pojęciu elementu idealnego i uogólnionej odległości Minkowskiego od tego elementu. Procedura ta przedstawiona w postaci uniwersalnego algorytmu rankingowego eliminuje większość wad funkcji rankingowej w postaci sumy ważonej.

The paper presents a general procedure for creating the rankings of a set of objects, while the relation of preference based on any ranking function. The analysis was possible to use the ranking functions began by showing the fundamental drawbacks of commonly used functions in the form of a weighted sum. As a special case of the ranking procedure in the space of a relation, the procedure based on the notion of an ideal element and generalized Minkowski distance from the element was proposed. This procedure, presented as universal ranking algorithm, eliminates most of the disadvantages of ranking functions in the form of a weighted sum.

W czasach karolińskich kategoria „miejsca” (locus) stanowiła jedno z kluczowych pojęć filozofii. Punktem wyjścia rozważań na ten temat była przypisywana św. Augustynowi parafraza Arystotelesowskich Kategorii: Categoriae Decem. W wieku IX za dodatkowe źródło służyły przetłumaczone przez Jana Szkota Eriugenę pisma Maksyma Wyznawcy. Opierając się na wspomnianych źródłach, autorzy, tacy jak Alkuin, Eriugena, Odon z Cluny i liczni pomniejsi, nieznani z imienia glosatorzy, wypracowali cztery sposoby rozumienia kategorii locus, które – choć niezależne od siebie – nierzadko pojawiały się w tekstach równolegle. Po pierwsze „miejsce” jako kategoria stanowiło jeden z predykatów powszechnie odnoszących się do rzeczywistości. Po drugie, zgodnie z Arystotelesowską definicją z Fizyki, „miejsce” oznaczało zewnętrzną granicę bezpośrednio okalającą daną rzecz. Po trzecie, w ślad za Maksymem Wyznawcą locus identyfikowane było z warunkiem koniecznym istnienia, kategorią, której wymyka się jedynie Bóg. Wreszcie Eriugena utożsamił locus z definicją istotową, będącą określeniem nie tylko cielesnej, ale również duchowej rzeczywistości.

The category of place was a crucial philosophical concept during the times of the Carolingians. The main source that was read at that time was the paraphrase of Aristotle’s Categories called Categoriae decem, which was thought to be the work of Saint Augustine. In the middle of the 9th century, the treatise Ambigua in Iohannem by Maximus the Confessor, translated by John Scottus Eriugena, became the second influential work on that matter. Carolingian writers, like Alcuin, Eriugena, Odo of Cluny, and several other anonymous authors, understood the category of place in four different ways, which do not exclude each other and were often mentioned together. Firstly, they identified locus with one of Aristotle’s categories, as a general predicate. Secondly, they understood it in the manner of the Aristotelian definition in Physics as “the immediate container of that of which it is place” (see Physics IV.4). Thirdly, under the influence of Maximus, place was interpreted as a necessary condition of every existence, except the existence of God. Finally, Eriugena identified locus with a substantial definition, which characterized not only the corporal but also the spiritual reality.

Researchers also analyze modern aspects of language-nation interaction, language-national security, the concept of “institutional language management”, “language discrimination”, “hate speech as a form of discursive discrimination”, “linguistic landscape”, informal names in the socio-group “ students”, communication in the socio-group “political elite”, etc. In general, the results obtained in the works of representatives of Lviv sociolinguistic circle contribute to the development of the terminological system and the categorical base of historical, theoretical, applied and cognitive sociolinguistics.

The paper presents a general procedure for creating quality rankings of objects. Ranking procedure fixed set of elements by recurrent determining the extreme elements of the set on the basis of its preference relation. The result of the procedure is to divide the set into ranking clusters (categories). The method splits the set of the clusters can be used in qualitative analysis of objects in many practical applications.

Background. Taekwondo (TKD) like many combat sports utilizes weight as a measure to categorize competitors. In an attempt to gain advantage over opponents, athletes practice rapid weight loss to qualify for the lowest weight class possible. This practice is routine despite being fundamentally dangerous to the health of athletes. Height is a measurement that cannot be exploited for competitive advantage and has the potential to be a healthier alternative for sport classifications. Purpose and aim. This study evaluated the relationship between weight and height categories in classifying competitive senior TKD athletes for the potential of using height as a healthier grouping method. Methods. The height and weight of 118 male (n=83) and female (n=35) athletes were measured by either physical measurement during weigh-in at the Canadian National Taekwondo Championships (n=31) or following Covid-19 restrictions, athletes (n=87) were given an online survey for height and weight. The athletes were categorized by sex and senior Olympic weight category. The athletes were then grouped by 4 proposed height categories based on CDC height weight growth charts. Results. We found that 80.72% of male athletes remained within ±1 category when categorized by height and 94.29% of female athletes remained within ±1 category when categorized by height. Conclusions. Height categorization does little to disrupt current competition cohorts while disincentivizing unhealthy rapid weight loss practices in TKD athletes and providing more equitable competition by matching athletes of similar height and reach.

Tło. Taekwondo (TKD), podobnie jak wiele sportów walki, wykorzystuje wagę jako miarę do kategoryzacji zawodników. Próbując uzyskać przewagę nad przeciwnikami, sportowcy ćwiczą szybką utratę wagi, aby zakwalifikować się do najniższej możliwej kategorii wagowej. Ta praktyka jest rutynowa, mimo, że jest zasadniczo niebezpieczna dla zdrowia sportowców. Wzrost jest miarą, której nie można wykorzystać do przewagi konkurencyjnej i może być zdrowszą alternatywą dla klasyfikacji sportowych. Cel i cel. Badanie to oceniało związek między kategoriami masy i wzrostu w klasyfikacji startujących zawodników Taekwondo seniorów pod kątem potencjalnego wykorzystania wzrostu jako zdrowszej metody grupowania. Metody. Autorzy stwierdzili, że 80,72% sportowców płci męskiej mieściło się w zakresie +/-1 kategorii przy podziale według wzrostu, a 94,29% sportowców płci żeńskiej mieściło się w przedziale +/-1 kategorii przy podziale według wzrostu. Wnioski. Kategoryzacja wzrostu w niewielkim stopniu zakłóca obecne grupy zawodów, jednocześnie zniechęcając do niezdrowych praktyk szybkiego odchudzania u sportowców z TKD i zapewniając bardziej wyrównane współzawodnictwo poprzez dopasowywanie sportowców o podobnym wzroście i zasięgu.

The paper is devoted to analysis of the critique of Aristotelian theory of categories from Enneads, its main arguments and the relation of Plotinus’ theory of the kinds of sense world (kosmos aistheotos) to Aristotle’s categories. According to Plotinus, Aristotelian notion of categories is not a relevant tool of grasping the being in adequate sense, that is, as noetic being. The main argument is focused on the category of substance. There is a difference between how the problem of the kinds of beings is understood in Enn. VI 1 [42] and in Enn. VI 3 [44]. In the latter a basis for taking into account a modified form of Aristotelian categories as acceptable way of predicating of changeable sensual objects can be pointed out.

In ihrem Artikel bespricht die Verfasserin die in Enneaden enthaltene Kritik an peripatetische Theorie von Kategorien, deren Charakter, Hauptvorwürfe und das Problem der Abhängigkeit der Plotins Lehre von verschiedenen Arten der Sinneswelt (kosmos aisthetos) von der Aristotelischen Kategorie. Nach Plotin ist die Aristotelische Lehre von Kategorien kein richtiges Werkzeug dazu, das Sein in richtigem Sinne des Wortes (noetisches Sein) zu fassen. Die Hauptlinie der Kritik ist auf die Kategorie der Substanz gerichtet. Das Problem der verschiedenen Seinsarten wird in Enn. VI. 1 [42] und in Enn. VI. 3 [44] unterschiedlich betrachtet. In der letzten Stelle erscheinen die Grundlagen für eine modifizierte Form von peripatetischen Kategorien als eine akzeptable Methode des Beurteilens von wechselhaften Sinnesobjekten.

Tekst ma na celu bliższe zapoznanie Czytelnika z otwierającą cykl Aristotelica pracą doktorską Franza Brentano Von der mannigfachen Bedeutung des Seienden nach Aristoteles (1862), która znana jest głównie z tego, że miała zainspirować młodego Martina Heideggera i sprawić, że zajął się filozofią. Tekst bada naturę i siłę tej inspiracji. Część pierwsza opowiada historię powstania Von der mannigfachen … oraz przedstawia szerszy kontekst zetknięcia się Heideggera z filozofią Brentana, a także stara się przedstawić Heideggera na tle jego pozostałych uczniów (Kazimierz Twardowski, Edmund Husserl, Alexius Meinong, Carl Stumpf, Anton Marty, et al.). Część druga omawia piętnaście tez o bycie, które stanowią sedno dzieła O wielorakim znaczeniu bytu u Arystotelesa i tym samym umożliwia porównanie tomistycznej w duchu ontologii Brentana z ontologią fundamentalną Heideggera, o czym traktuje część trzecia. Część trzecia stara się również zweryfikować faktyczną wysokość „długu”, jaki Heidegger miał u Brentana zaciągnąć i odpowiedzieć na pytanie, do jakiego stopnia, o ile w ogóle, Martina Heideggera możemy nazwać „brentanistą”.

The text aims to acquaint the Reader with Franz Brentano’s doctoral dissertation Von der man- nig fachen Bedeutung des Seienden nach Aristoteles (1862), which opens the Aristotelica series and that is known to have inspired young Heidegger to become a philosopher. The text analyses the nature and scope of this inspiration. The first part tells the story of the book’s origin and tries to provide a bigger picture for Heidegger’s acquaintance with Brentano’s philosophy as well as presenting him against the background of Brentano’s other students (Kazimierz Twar- dowski, Edmund Husserl, Alexius Meinong , Carl Stumpf, Anton Marty, et al. ). The second part describes the famous 15 theses on being, which are the heart of the book On the several senses of being in Aristotle , and thus enables a comparison of Brentano’s Thomistic ontolog y with the fundamental ontolog y of Heidegger. And this comparison is the subject of part three, which also tries to verify to what extent Heidegger was in fact indebted to Brentano and whether we can call him a ‘brentanist’ at all

Filozofia analityczna po logicyzmie Fregego i atomizmie logicznym Russella odziedziczyła szereg założeń związanych z istnieniem rodzajowej dziedziny bytów indywidualnych, których tożsamość i elementarne określenia już mamy zdefiniowane. Te „indywidua” istnieją tylko w idealnych „światach możliwych” i nie są niczym innym jak zbiorami posiadającymi strukturę bądź czystymi zbiorami matematycznymi. W przeciwieństwie do takich czysto abstrakcyjnych modeli, Hegel analizuje rolę pojęciowych rozróżnień i odpowiednich brakujących inferencji w rzeczywistym świecie. Tutaj wszystkie obiekty są przestrzennie i czasowo skończone. Nawet jeśli rzeczywiste rzeczy poruszają się zgodnie z pewnymi formami, są tylko momentami w całościowym procesie. Wszelako, formy te nie są przedmiotami bezpośredniej, empirycznej obserwacji, lecz zakładają udane i powtarzalne działania i akty mowy. W rezultacie żadna semantyka odnoszącej się do świata referencji nie może obyć się bez kategorii Heglowskich, które wykraczają daleko poza narzędzia opartej wyłącznie na relacjach logiki matematycznej.

Such ‘things’ exist only in ideal ‘possible world’ which are nothing but structured sets of purely mathematical sets. In contrast to such purely abstract models, Hegel analyses the role of conceptual differentiations and corresponding default inferences in the real world. Here, all objects are spatially and temporally finite. Even if real things move according to certain forms, they are only moments in holistic processes. Moreover, the forms are no objects of immediate empirical observation but presuppose successfully reproducible actions and speech acts. As a result, no semantics of world-related reference can do without Hegel’s categories, which go far beyond the means of merely relational mathematical logic.

Wysoka ranga teorii Witruwiusza w naszym kręgu cywilizacyjnym jest rezultatem faktu, iż traktat w którym została zapisana był pierwszym w historii architektury zbiorem porad i wytycznych napisanych przez architekta praktyka. Zawierał zarówno wskazania dotyczące wykształcenia architekta, jego relacji z klientem jak zasady ujęte w kategorie pozwalające na kontrolę jakości samej architektury. Teoria ta była bardzo mocno związana z współczesną Witruwiuszowi filozofią opartą na interrelacji człowieka i kosmosu i podobnie jak owa filozofia akcentowała wartości uniwersalne, co skutkowało dawniej i skutkuje nadal faktem, iż abstrakcja stała się niemal Zachodnią obsesją górując nad świadomością istoty powstawania i oceny architektury. Triada: trwałość, użyteczność, piękno współcześnie uzupełniona o znaczenie może w naszych czasach być traktowana jedynie metaforycznie, stanowiąc jednocześnie ogólnie zrozumiały odnośnik i płaszczyznę dyskusji.

The high rank of the theory written by Vitruvius in our civilisation results from the fact that De Architectura containing this theory was the first treatise in the history of architecture written by the architect practitioner. Vitruvius work was dealing with education and duties of architect, the client' s role and the principles of designing architecture described in categories, allowing for controlling its quality. His theory was very tightly connected with the contemporary philosophical arguments, relying upon the deep belief of interrelation of Man with Cosmos, accentuating the universal values in the same manner, what indirectly caused the fact that abstraction became almost the Western prejudice, prevailing over examining the essence of creation and judging the architecture. The three categories: stability, function and beauty, nowadays supplemented by meaning in our era can be treated only metaphorically, however constituting versatile reference and setting the proper conditions for the discourse at the same time.
