Introduction: The study aim was to construct a technical and tactical analysis of women’s volleyball based on notational analysis in top-level and junior women’s European volleyball matches, to compare these two levels, and to clarify the differences between the winners and losers of a set. Material and Methods: Four matches from the 2010 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championships and 2010 CEV Junior Women’s European Championship 2010 were analyzed using Data Volley software. The number and performance level of different skills were recorded in total and were grouped according to the role of the players. Methods of scoring and attacking zones were also analyzed. Results: There were only slight differences between the two levels in terms of success in different skills. When the skill executions were compared between the winning and losing teams of a set within the levels, less successful skill executions and more errors in different skills were found for the losing teams. Conclusions: The results seem to indicate that there are only minor differences between adult and junior women’s volleyball at the highest level. Attacking seems to be the most important skill concerning winning in both levels. The efficiency of attacking seems to depend upon the quality and versatility of the setting and also from the physical abilities of the players.

Study aim: To assess the changes in serum lipid profile of volleyball players in various phases of competition period characterised by creatine kinase activity.Material and methods: A group of 14 Polish elite volleyball players aged 23 - 34 years were examined 3 times during the competition period lasting 10 weeks. Total cholesterol (TC), LDL, HDL, triacylglycerols (TG) and creatine kinase (CK) activity were determined in serum. Body fat content was determined from 4 skinfolds by Durnin's method. Results: Creatine kinase activity was very high throughout the study period although significantly decreased in relation to the first examination; TC, LDL, TC/HDL and LDL/HDL gradually increased while HDL decreased. Nevertheless, the values of TC, HDL, LDL and LDL/HDL were within normal limits in all subjects throughout the study. Conclusions: The changes in lipid profile may be regarded as transitory and of no significant impact on the risk of cardiovascular diseases as in all cases they were within physiological ranges.

Study aim: the aim of the study was to identify differences between athletically trained and untrained subjects with respect to body composition, motor and cognitive abilities. Materials and methods: three groups of girls aged 12 to 14 years old participated in the study: young judokas (n = 42), volleyball players (n = 54) and their untrained peers (n = 54). Variables of interest were assessed through eight motor tests, nine anthropometric variables and the RSPM. Results: this study showed differences in some anthropometric characteristics and almost all motoric abilities between trained girls and untrained girls (p < 0.05), indicating that well-programmed activity can positively influence these characteristics and abilities. In addition, group of volleyball players presented significantly better results in cognitive abilities (p < 0.01), indicating a need for intelligence in complex sports like volleyball. Conclusions: generally, the trained groups of athletes possessed better coordination and strength than their untrained counterparts.

Uzyskane dane pomagają oszacować blaski i cienie procesu komercjalizacji siatkówki w obu krajach.

Volleyball is a discipline that is making its presence felt stronger and more visible among other Polish sports. The authors focus on presenting the changes that have occurred in Polish (male) volleyball along with the process of continuing professionalization and commercialization. The remarkable recognition of “brand,” which Polish volleyball became, is confronted in the article with entirely different reality in Spain. The discourse of volleyball marketization in Spain where football is dominant is quite different. The authors try to compare the situation of the discipline in both countries and find the answer to the question why commercialization of volleyball in Spain proceeds in such a different way. The comparison of the situation of volleyball in both countries is based on empirical research. Several interviews were conducted among Spanish and Polish people involved in volleyball. The data helped to assess the pros and cons of the commercialization of volleyball in both countries.
