Using the frameworks of natural morphology and functional-semantic analysis, the paper deals with the polyfunctional instrumental case in early speech development (during the first 3 years of a child’s life). Both a case study and a methodological study, it presents the results of research on grammatical forms, case meanings and the development of pragmatic functions. The key question is: which instrumental case structures do children acquire preferentially? The research is based on a combination of qualitative (audiovisual recordings of three children) and quantitative (1065 parental assessments) methods. Conclusions are reached on three levels: (a) form: maximal morphotactic transparency, regularity and simplicity are typical for preferentially acquired forms; (b) semantics: the preferentially acquired comitative and instrumental meanings can be interpreted as the linguistic representation of experience in social contact and in dealing with tools or means to accomplish one’s goals; (c) pragmatics: children use the instrumental case in basic functions (to provide contextual information, for disagreements, answers, requests and commands). The research broadens the understanding of speech ontogenesis and contributes to a theory of language that is compatible with the process of its acquisition.

Semi-communication as a limited form of verbal communication in the linguistic literature has been taken into consideration, especially in relation to the Danes, Swedes and Norwegians. The author compares some characteristic features of the communication between the Czechs, the Poles and the Slovaks. The author presents some common and a number of distinctive features. For example, there is a different inverse proportion between the comprehension of written and spoken language. A special attention is given to the similarity of the role (contributing element) of social, cultural and political phenomena, compensating differences in language systems communicating with groups of users in multiple languages. In this paper, the author also indicates a creation of a new language as one of the results of the Czech and Slovak communication. The author also incorporates in semi-communication the verbal contact of users of regional dialects and the standard language.

The current paper presents the results of a qualitative analysis of speech errors made during the L2 picture-naming task in the context of two mutually intelligible languages. The task was performed by native speakers of Slovak and its target language was Czech. The errors demonstrate that production is partly based on the so-called interlanguage analogies and interiorized rules derived from them. Such issues have been rather overlooked in the previous literature. Our qualitative findings offer a viable starting point for formulating novel hypotheses for quantitative studies on lexical access in bilinguals. The evidence discussed here shows that examining less commonly studied languages in their specific contexts can substantially enrich the research that has traditionally focused on better studied languages, such as English, French, German or Dutch.

The paper discusses Romantic imagination in two, relatively distant, national literatures. The first part is concerned with the problems comparative literature has faced in recent decades. In the second part, the work of two Slovak Romantic writers, Ján Kollár and Janko Kráľ, is compared to the poetry of Lord Gordon Byron and William Wordsworth. By identifying certain affinities between the discussed literary works, the authors point to the importance of the concept of national literature which has not lost its role even in contemporary literary studies.

In this paper we describe our automatic analysis of several parallel Bulgarian-Slovak texts with the goal to obtain useful information about Slovak translation equivalents of (definite) articles and demonstrative pronouns in Bulgarian. Rather than focusing on individual translation equivalents, we present a method for automatic extraction and visualization of the translations. This can serve as a guide for pinpointing interesting features in specific translated documents and could be extended for other parts of speech or otherwise identifiable textual units.

Software localization is an integral part of a business process as long as a company wants to sell their software products on a global scale. The purpose of the following article is to provide information about some key features of the development and publishing process that have a significant impact on digital game localization from English into Slovak. The selected features are based on a study by M. Kabát on localization aspects of non-gaming software that are here adapted to digital game localization, and on the author’s practical experience. Each key feature is briefly introduced and its impact on digital game localization is described. Where necessary, examples are provided. Other than presenting key features of digital game localization, the intent behind this paper is to spread information on digital game localization as I believe that, e.g., developers should be more informed on this topic to create more effective cooperation with localizers and in that way higher quality localization.

The semicommunication is a kind of two-codes language communication between people who don’t speak the language of the other but they could understand each other because both languages are close relative. It means crossing the border of own language spoken or written and understanding of the message of the foreign recipient. In the west-slavonic languages the misunderstanding in the semicommunication may be caused by problems on the level of phonetics, morphology and syntactic. The article defines some examples of misunderstanding which could be made of linguistic and extralinguistic reasons. For example the understanding of the message is related with the knowledge of the recipient about the own language, its past and vocabulary.

It was Einar Haugen (1966) who introduced into linguistics the term semi-communication. He examined the means of verbal communication in a group of three Scandinavian languages, the interlocutors of which used different language codes in one communication act. Asymmetry of such a discourse is manifested by a communiqué formulated in one mother tongue and perceived by a recipient on the basis of his/her own vernacular code knowledge. This article aims at analysing means and forms of Czech-Polish semi-communication via SMS. The investigation indicates that writers used in their SMS messages intended for the other-language recipients especially those linguistic means, by which they seek to increase the clarity of text messages intended for recipients – speakers of closely related (West Slavonic) languages.

Web presentation of bilingual corpora (Slovak-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-Polish)In this paper we focus on the web-presentation of bilingual corpora in three Slavic languages and their possible applications. Slovak-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-Polish corpora are collected and developed as results of the collaboration in the frameworks of two joint research projects between Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, from one side, and from the other side: Ľ. Štúr Institute of Linguistics, Slovak Academy of Sciences and Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, coordinate by authors of this paper.

Extraction and Presentation of Bilingual Correspondences from Slovak-Bulgarian Parallel CorpusIn this paper the results of the automatic extraction and presentation of bilingual correspondences from Slovak-Bulgarian Parallel corpus are described. The equivalent phrases are extracted from sentence and word level automatically aligned corpus, filtered, indexed and presented in a dictionary-like interface. The bilingual dictionary database contains 80 thousand phrase pairs consisting of approximately 350 thousand words (per each language). Counting unique word forms, the size is 31 thousand in the Slovak part of the dictionary, 26 thousand in the Bulgarian part.

In this paper a concise overview of the reception of Dutch literature in Hungarian, Polish, Slovak and Czech until the end of World War I is given. The first translations are from 1805 (Polish), and 1846 (Czech) respectively. At present, some 175 translations from this period have been found, most of them in Czech and the fewest in Slovak. From publications of literary history the idea arises that especially Flemish literature has been received in Central Europe for political reasons. The researchers point towards the Belgian Revolution of 1830 which was, in contrast to most other revolts from this period, successful. Moreover, the Flemish struggle for the use of Dutch language in Flanders showed similarities with similar issues in Central Europe. A closer look reveals, however, that these ideas have to be modified. The results of the study are sometimes surprising.

The paper takes a critical look at the ways Central-Eastern European cinema represented the era of socialism. My talk concentrates on how films made in the post-communist era picture the past from country to country. Geographically speaking my talk overviews the region known as Central- Eastern Europe. Apart from the so called Vishegrad group (Poland the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) I also included the cinema of Slovenia. This variety enables me to overview how cinematic memory is constructed from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic coast, a memory which despite its similarities cannot be described as singular. My primary aim is to determine those qualities and trends which characterise the so called ‘past-cinema’ of the region. My paper aims to analyze the roles of the historic film in teaching media and film studies subjects. I concentrate on methodological issues related to film materials.

Based on the Russian paremiological minimum of G. L. Permyakov and its reflection in the three Slavonic languages and the English language, determined by the methodology of one sociolinguistic paremiological experiment conducted in 2000-s by the author, this study is a further development of the G. L. Permyakov’s idea of the general international paremiological core. There is here the first representation of the Russian–Czech–Slovak–Bulgarian–English paremiological core as a condensation of a few author’s published collections of frequent current Slavonic and English proverbs, verified recently with the data of Internet space. Special attention is paid in this article to the characteristics of the Czech part of the analyzed paremiological core.

The article analyzes the Greek Catholic prayers and use of the honorific category therein. To appeal to the Lord, Theotokos and the saints, the form You (sg.) is used. It is a special lexical form of politeness. The well-known traditional you (pl.) where respect for the addressee is expressed in religious texts (sermons, prayers) is replaced by the honorific form of You (sg.). The article emphasizes the role of the honorific in religious communication, its functioning in the religious text since honorific (respectful) forms are used to describe the actions of individuals commanding respect (from the speaker’s point of view). The researched material consists of the texts of the prayers and Slavonic Akathists which are used in the Eastern Worship.

This work is an attempt to highlight the specific features of nationally oriented and transnational prose texts. Nationally oriented texts reflect history, culture and identity of one nation (e.g. prose by Solzhenitsyn and Krištúfek), transnational texts compound two or more national culture codes (e.g. prose by Brežná, Kaminer, Moníková and Škvorecký). The goal of this study is to identify specific difficulties in the process of their translation and transfer of imagos, that is stereotypical images of other identities. With the use of stylistic method, some typical ways of transmitting these imagos in literary texts are demonstrated.

The Polish word pantałyk is only used in the expression zbić z pantałyku ‘put sb off his stride, confuse, upset, disconcert’ (lit. ‘strike sb off the pantałyk’). The original meaning and the etymology of the word have been unknown, and this is also valid for Moravian, Slovak and Eastern Slavonic. This author argues that it primarily was a riding term ‘crupper’, composed of a German loanword with a Slavonic suffix.

The main goal of this work is to map Spanish loanwords in contemporary Slovak. Based on the defined criteria, we found 108 words of Spanish origin. We paid great attention to the etymology of the words, which was a key criterion in their selection. In addition to these loanwords, we offer an overview of words that came into Slovak from Arabic and Indian languages through Spanish, as well as of those that originated in other languages, but with the original basis of the word also coming from Spanish. We analyze the Spanish loanwords as for the adaptation processes, in terms of classification into thematic areas, we classify them chronologically according to the century of the first written occurrence as well as the frequency of their use in Slovak.

„Americanisation” in political campaign assumes on the one hand that all changes, techniques and campaign tools were directly taken from the United States. On the other hand, it also refl ects general developments in political policy, media and society (modernization). The main objective of this article is to examine these trends by using the example of new democracy – the Slovak Republic? The paper therefore identifi es the main characteristics of the process, but also to set an adequate methodological framework and try to explore it in the Slovak environment, specifi cally in the context of the presidential elections of 2009 and 2014.

Procesy amerykanizacji w komunikowaniu politycznym oznaczają z jednej strony przejmowanie technik i narzędzi, które są wykorzystywane w kampaniach wyborczych w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Z drugiej – odzwierciedlają ogólne zmiany w strategii politycznej, mediach i społeczeństwie (modernizacja). Głównym celem artykułu jest zbadanie tych trendów w oparciu o przykład młodej demokracji – Republiki Słowacji. W tym kontekście artykuł identyfi kuje główne cechy procesów amerykanizacji w oparciu o zdefi niowane ramy metodologiczne. Badania były prowadzone w kontekście wyborów prezydenckich na Słowacji w 2009 i 2014 roku.

This study deals with linguistic terms in Slovak, Czech and Polish languages. It describes and confronts linguistic terms as terminologically motivated units from the point of view of syntactic motivation. Based on the theory of lexical motivation it points out also a cooperation of the terminological and syntactic motivation. The issue description as well as conclusions are built upon the research of an extensive material basis of Slovník slovanské lingvistické terminologie 1, 2 (Jedlička (ed.) 1977, 1979) and on more recent sources. The study points out the proportion, distribution and competition of one-word and multi-word (syntactically motivated) terms in linguistics, as well as interlingual correspondences and differences, when naming identical denotates is concerned. Furthermore, construction types of multi-word linguistic terms have been identified in Slovak, Czech and Polish languages. The paper finally pays attention to the most frequent construction types, as well as to interlingual correspondences and differences appearing in construction classification.
