Finding the answer to the question whether and to what extent wages are used for shaping the social potential in large production enterprises was the basic goal of the presented studies. The studies were conducted by means of the questionnaire-based method. They encompassed large industrial enterprises (employing more than 250 employees) situated in the area of Warminsko-Mazurskie voivodship. Research material was obtained from 45 enterprises. Generally, the results of the studies conducted indicate that the enterprises covered conducted expansive remuneration polices focused on high effectiveness. Consequently to the priorities they try building remuneration models and select remuneration tools. The appropriate setting of the directions for the implemented remuneration strategy in combination with organizational strategy is accompanied in many companies by clear weakness in the instrumental aspect. Wages are still underappreciated as tools for development of the social potential of the organization and remuneration policies of enterprises are subjected mainly to achievement of short-term goals.

Market position of enterprises and quality of operations of public organisations depend on numerous variables positioned within and outside those entities. The social potential within the enterprise or public organisation is one of such internal variables. The study aimed at assessment of quality of the management in enterprises of SME sector and public organisations, including units of territorial government. The empirical material collected revealed the competence gaps mainly in the areas of personality predispositions and management skills.

Social potential of firm is very complex problem linked with human capital and Human Resources Management. The most important issues underlined by studies at the topic are: knowledge management, values, competencies, attitudes and last not least - work motivation. Researching the aspect of employees motivation the author focuses on Hackman and Oldham model (1976). The model is attractive for the double picture of motivation - how organization of work is motivating the employees and which job conditions are important for them in their work. In the research over 1000 employees from the Lublin Region were interviewed. The impact of age, education, salary and form of job contract on the work motivation werw analysed. It was shown that the social potential of organization depends on age, education, and type of job contract. Polish workers are mainly motivated by external factors as type of contract and salary.
