A significant part of neo-positivist philosophy was Carnap’s project of the elimination of metaphysics by the logical analysis of language, pronounced in the article with that title. This project was aimed, among other things, at the creation of a so-called logical syntax of language which would enable metaphysical sentences to be revealed as senseless and thus their elimination from scientific discourse. In this text we first of all focus on Carnap’s definition of logical syntax in its historical context. We then analyse Carnap’s unsuccessful attempts to construct the logical syntax of language, showing that his difficulties in seeking logical syntax are not accidental, but have a systemic character, for they are connected with the way in which Carnap defined the problem. In conclusion we formulate the consequences of Carnap’s failure for his philosophical project of the elimination of metaphysics and for neo-positivism in general.

Ein bedeutender Bestandteil der neopositivistischen Philosophie war Carnaps Projekt der im gleichnamigen Artikel angekündigten Eliminierung der Metaphysik durch die logische Sprachanalyse. Dieses Projekt hatte u. a. die Schaffung einer sog. Sprachsyntax zum Inhalt, mit der metaphysische Sätze als sinnlos identifiziert werden und vom wissenschaftlichen Diskurs ausgeschlossen werden könnten. Im vorliegenden Text widmen wir uns zunächst Carnaps Definition der logischen Syntax im historischen Kontext. Anschließend analysieren wir Carnaps erfolglose Versuche der Konstruktion einer logischen Sprachsyntax, wobei wir aufzeigen, dass seine Schwierigkeiten bei der Suche nach einer logischen Syntax nicht zufällig, sondern systemimmanent sind und mit der Art und Weise zusammenhängen, in der Carnap das Problem definiert hatte. Abschließend formulieren wir die Folgen von Carnaps Versagen für sein philosophisches Projekt der Eliminierung der Metaphysik und für den Neopositivismus als solchem.

The paper outlines and discusses the major tenets of moderately pluralistic methodology. The latter is juxtaposed to J. Życiński’s principle of natural interdisciplinarity. It instantiates scientific pluralism as a domain-specific agenda for research. The symbolic and causal understanding are integrated in this methodological conception by means of a specific kind of counterfactual reasoning, which is coined the delimiting counterfactual. It makes the moderately pluralistic methodology applicable to non-experimental research.

Artykuł prezentuje i omawia zasadnicze założenia koncepcji umiarkowanie pluralistycznej metodologii. Ta ostatnia jest zbieżna z J. Życińskiego zasadą naturalności interdyscyplinarnej. Reprezenuje ona szeroko rozumiany nurt pluralizmu naukowego w zakresie sposobu prowadzenia badań w danej dziedzinie. W tej koncepcji połączone są dwa poziomy rozumienia symboliczny i przyczynowy za pomocą swoistego rodzaju wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych, określonych tu jako rozgraniczających wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych. Dzięki nim umiarkowanie pluralistyczna metodologia ma zastosowanie do badań nieeksperymentalnych.

Celem artykułu jest analiza sytuacji logiki współczesnej w aspekcie pytania o związek pluralizmu systemów logicznych z relatywizmem w logice. Poszukuję odpowiedzi na pytania: Czy wielość logik, a dokładniej wielość i różnorodność systemów skonstruowanych przez logików, da się w jakiś racjonalny sposób usprawiedliwić? Czy pluralizm w logice nieodzownie prowadzi do uznania tezy relatywizmu? Czy we współczesnej filozofii logiki logiczny relatywizm jest zabobonem czy też poglądem prawdziwym i należycie uzasadnionym?

The aim of the article is to analyze the situation of contemporary logic with reference to the issue concerning connections between the pluralism of logical systems and relativism in logic. Accordingly, I seek answers to the following questions: Can the plurality of logic, more specifically, a large number and variety of systems constructed by logicians, be justified in a rational way? Does pluralism in logic imply the thesis of relativism? Is logical relativism in the contemporary philosophy of logic just a superstition or is it a duly substantiated view?

The article is an attempt to answer the question whether the result of the connection between corroboration and verisimilitude is an inductive element in the Popperian methodology. For this purpose the essay collates Karl Popper’s view with David Hume’s scepticism and inductionism of Rudolf Carnap. Further on the paper analizes the compromising”(for inductionism and critical falsificationism) proposition of Evaldas Nekraˇsas. The article also contains a presentation of Imre Lakatos’ allegation of Popper’s scepticism and the accusation of inductionism as formulated by John Watkins. The study of the disputes between the philosophers leads to the conclusion that the critical views are baseless. The final hypothesis is that these are not the right ways of proving the allegations of crypto-inductionism.
