This article presents the concept of the relationship between faith and love, orthodoxy and orthopraxy, i.e. love for God and neighbor in Martin Luther‘s theology. It is based on the results of research by the researchers of the so‑ called Finnish School of Luther Interpretation. This is defined by the view of the reformer‘s thinking, marked by German neo‑ Kantian theology, separating God‘s being and his actions, as well as by the perspective of the Formula Concordiae, emphasizing the forensic aspect of justification. Representatives of the Finnish school note the reformer‘s connection to patristic sources in the form of an emphasis on the genuine participation of the believer in Christ. Within it, the act of justification and the process of changing the believer are understood as two aspects of one event. In the introduction, attention is paid to the sources that shaped Luther‘s theology, and in the end to the possible implications for the theology of Christian action, especially diaconal practice.

Autor podejmuje próbę określenia znaczenia diakonatu na przestrzeni wieków i w czasach współczesnych. Pokazuje jego początki zarysowane w Nowym Testamencie i rozwój w starożytnym Kościele. Następnie przedstawia współczesne rozumienie posługi diakonalnej w świetle nauki Soboru Watykańskiego II, wskazań św. Jana Pawła II i późniejszych papieży – Benedykta XVI i Franciszka. Za szczególnie ważną autor uznaje współpracę diakonów z instytucjami charytatywnymi, nie tylko kościelnymi, ale również świeckimi. Zarówno na wstępie, jak i w ostatniej części artykułu autor stawia także pytania o perspektywy rozwoju diakonatu w Polsce.

The author of the article attempts to define the meaning of the diaconate over the centuries and in modern times. He shows its origins outlined in the New Testament and its development in the ancient Church. Then he presents the contemporary understanding of the diaconal ministry in the light of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the guidelines of St. John Paul II and later popes - Benedict XVI and Francis. The author considers the cooperation of deacons with charitable institutions, not only ecclesiastical but also secular ones, to be of particular importance. Both in the introduction and in the last part of the article, the author also asks questions about prospects of development of the diaconate in Poland.

This study is based upon the most recent Popes’ emphasis on the diaconia of the Church. It distinguishes in this context between two basic questions: the Christianisation of the Church’s charity organisations and the diaconia of the entire Church including its structures. Using the criterion that Christian help is to be directed especially to those who are lacking in any such help, the study assesses the current practice of the Catholic charity organisation Caritas Czech Republic. It points out that Caritas Czech Republic focuses on those target groups which are well secured within the system of social services, thereby missing the basic criterion of Christian help. The study views the reasons for this deficiency in the organisation’s essential mission, this being a phenomenon it calls the outsourcing of neighbourly love.
