Dynamic growth in the household lending market has in recent years increased this market’s importance and has had an influence on the entire economy. The article compares the development of the credit market for households in Poland with both highly developed European countries and those with a level of socioeconomic development on a par with Poland’s. The hypothesis is that European integration affects the credit market and leads, despite historical and cultural differences, to its gradual real convergence. These trends are particularly pronounced among the new EU members. Rapid development of the credit market for households has been accompanied by changes in this market’s structure – loans are increasingly becoming a source of the long-term financing of household consumption. Analysis based on the aggregated data reveals that the volume of loans per capita depends largely on the wealth of households. Clustering done using Ward’s method made it possible to isolate four groups of countries that are similar in terms of the size of their credit market relative to households (measured in relation to GDP) and its structure (the share of housing loans to total retail loans). The increase in the relative size of the credit market in post-socialist countries, after an initial rapid increase in demand for consumer loans, is made possible only by increasing the share of long-term loans on property.

The global financial crisis was a very big challenge especially for banking sector. We can say that the young Polish financial sector managed with satisfaction this challenge without many problems which troubled banking environment elsewhere in Europe. Article says that in 2009, the real estate financing market has passed credibility test during the economic slowdown. Even though banks share credit fell to the level from 2006, in whole 2009 consistently were increased sales housing loans banks. Introduced many restrictions on access to credit (increased profit margins, higher requirements for obtaining credits, additional security). Throughout 2009 banks gradually were rebuilding the level of lending, which resulted from well known government program 'Family strike out on their own' which could have been found in banks offers.

The next (24) part of Cooperative Thought Library reminds personage and opinions of Witold Lewicki (1859-1931), Galician lawyer, journalist and politician. His views concern the direction of development of Polish credit institutions and economic program, which should be based on values such as solidarity and cooperation. We publish excerpts from the Lewicki's book entitled Zagadnienie gospodarcze Galicyi, Lwow, 1914.

The main aim of the article is to determine how often Polish farms resort in their operation to credits and leasing. Generally, the degree to which these forms of financing are used is not high, especially in the case of leasing. It should be noted, however, that an improvement has occurred in this respect as evidenced by an increase in the credit indebtedness of farms recorded between 1996 and 2002. Moreover, polarization of farms is observable as far as the use of credits is concerned. On one hand, the use of credits has become less frequent in smaller farms and, on the other hand, the number of entities drawing large credits has increased. The surveyed respondents favourably assess the effects of the use of preferential credits in their farms. It can be stated that the low popularity of leasing among Polish farmers may be attributable to the economic downturn in agriculture and the farmers' insufficient knowledge about the possibilities of using this form of financing. The results of the conducted surveys also suggest that the farms which use credits and leasing have a relatively well defined organizational-demographic profiles. This creates a chance for banks and leasing firms to more selectively prepare proposals addressed to clients from the agricultural sector.

We compare the welfare effects of government credit subsidies and guarantees in transition and post-transition economies in the conditions of asymmetric information. We show that the guarantees and subsidies targeted to low risk borrowers decrease efficiency while those targeted to high risk borrowers increase efficiency both in transition and post-transition economies. The uniform non-targeted guarantees improve welfare. The uniform subsidies may be used to improve welfare in the economy subjected to credit rationing, but they do not have any effect on the size of collateral required in post-transition economy.

The lease, in accordance with the provisions of Article 7091 of the Civil Code, must be understood as an agreement by which the lessor commits, in the activities of his company, to buy from the designated vendor under the terms of this agreement, and give this thing to the lessee for use (usus) or use and usufruct (ususfructus) for a definite period, and the lessee commits to pay the lessor, in agreed instalments monetary reward at least equal to the price or pay for the acquisition of goods by lessor. Credit component of the lease agreements have always been emphasized, which justifies the application of the law on consumer credit to a leasing agreement. The legislator, however, did not decide that this Act includes all contracts for consumers leasing. For the purpose of these considerations, there should be distinguished two types of leasing agreement. The first category will be 'professional' leasing in the current version of the Civil Code, while the second variation of the lease called 'consumers' legislator indirectly constitutes itself. It should be treated as a legally admissible form of a lease in the consumer market, in the absence of limitations in concluding an agreement for consumer credit, concerning charged use of things or rights, if the contract provides the transfer of ownership of goods or the rights on the consumer.

The paper deals with the relationship between provided credit and non-per-forming loans (NPL) in the Czech Republic (CR). In the period 1994 – 2016 the CR experienced both periods of rapid credit growth and the transition to market economy followed by a strong convergence process. The aim of the paper is to investigate the effects of credit growth on the NPL dynamics. The selected method is Bayesian estimation with instrumental variables. Results demonstrate positive relationship between the credit growth and the NPL dynamics; however, estimated posterior mean values are rather small and imply that the credit growth influenced the accumulation of credit risk and the origination of the NPL in a modest way. Moreover, the effects are stronger in the CR compared to the prior value (close to zero), which is calculated based on the information obtained from the international empirical studies.

This paper examines the determinants of the cost of credit to enterprises using data from the 2005 Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) for European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. We estimate an empirical model of the cost of the firm's most recent loan and show impact of monetary policy tool, such as nominal interest rate.
