In order to establish correct relationships between science and theology, a proper knowledge of the shared past is indispensable. The intention of this paper is to analyse the work of the American priest and professor of science John Augustine Zahm (1851–1921), specifically his views on the evolution of humankind in his 1896 book Evolution and Dogma. The interpretation rests upon diachronic research focused on the sources used and on the subsequent editing of the text. It comes to the conclusion that apart from external historical influences, there were three things in the text that advanced its prohibition: the term “Evolution” in the title, the transition from presenting evolution as a possible hypothesis to defending it as a thesis and the quotation from Dalmace Leroy, whose book was recently placed on the Index.

In Late Antiquity, the correlation between geographical context and theological content resulted in a variety of regionally colored types of Christianity. This discussion paper raises the question whether the identity of North African Christianity (ca. 200–450 CE) was expressed in a specific regional theology of original sin and grace. The project’s point of departure is Augustine of Hippo (354–430), arguably the most influential theologian of the region. His strict definition of original sin and grace was labeled as “typically North African” by Julian of Aeclanum (in a polemic context), and has been reiterated by scholars such as Gerald Bonner (as a suggestion for further research). Hence the discussion of the existence of a possible Africitas theologica will be focused on two questions: (1) Is there an African theology of original sin and grace prior to Augustine that formed a basis for his reflections? (2) To what extent is this theology present in other geographical regions of Christianity? The current paper will present the contours of the discussion on the specificity of North African theological identity.

The expression found in the paper’s title that originates from the Treatise on the Gospel of John is an illustration of the program of Augustine’s pastoral service, focusing on his great love of the Church. Indeed, whenever the bishop of Hippo was undertaking any ecclesiological issue, the theme of his love of the Church was always evident too. The Church, although tainted by human weakness, is for any Christian, a unique boat that heads safely towards the „fatherland”. It is a love of the Church where a man’s answer to the love of God is both clearly audible and visible. The paper aims to show some parts of that love. Firstly by referring to the process of Augustine’s personal discovery of the Church, and secondly to mention some significant events from his heroic seeking for the good of the Lord’s flock in the light of his fidelity to the entrusted to him amoris officium.

Both authors, Prudentius Clemens and Augustine of Hippo, recalled in their works the martyrdom of the bishop Fructuosus of Terragona and his deacons, Augurius and Eulogius. Poem VI from Peristephanon is entirely devoted to the subject of Spanish martyrs. Likewise, Augustine in his Sermo 273 mentions Fructuosus, Augurius and Eulogius. The article focuses on the way in which martyrdom is described by both authors.

The article presents the place of the principle of internality in the thought of Saint Augustine. The saint borrowed it from the ancient philosophical thought and turned it into the foundation of his philosophy. The principle finds its application in the rhetoric and sign theory, but also in metaphysics and the theory of knowledge. It becomes a method of discovering deeper levels of being. It is important in anthropology and here lies a way to find God, Who is deeper than the deepest in man and higher than the highest in man. The article shows the path of the Augustinian aesthetic experience thanks to which one moves from the material to the spiritual and ultimately towards fundamental beauty. The principle of interiority has its application in Christology, allowing us to find hidden glory and unchanging divinity in the suffering Christ.

Artykuł prezentuje miejsce zasady wewnętrzności w myśli św. Augustyna.

This article seeks to demonstrate the influence of Saint Augustine’s thought on the work of John Henry Newman, especially on the doctrine aimed at clarifying the relations between the act of faith and the other operations of the intellect. To this end, the concepts of auctoritas and ratio are presented as they appear in De vera religione. Subsequently, certain passages in Newman’s work are discussed in which the ascendancy of this doctrine is clear, particularly as regards the subject of doubt and that of the conscience. Finally, a comparison is established between the overall thought of both authors.

The article treats of the family in St. Augustine’s "Sermons to the People", from the perspective of his teaching on ‘the order of love’ (ordo amoris). Different forms of human love find their justification in relation to God as Supreme Good. In this perspective, the love of family, lest it be lost in a deceptive or false “love of neighbour,” has need of God as its ultimate horizon.

The Mary-Church parabola is an interesting theme in developing in early Christianity theology and pastoral work. The Great Doctors of the Western Church, Ambrose of Milan and Augustine of Hippo, inspired by the reflections to date, develop this idea and try to use it in a pastoral manner. This article attempts to juxtapose the thoughts of both authors, emphasizing in particular their pastoral teaching. Recognizing the sources of the connection of Mariological and ecclesiological thought in biblical women, he considers two main aspects: virginity and motherhood of both Mary and the Church. This thought was not only the subject of theoretical considerations, but also an important element of the pastoral teaching of both bishops.

Parabola Maryja-Kościół stanowi interesujący wątek rozwijających się we wczesnym chrześcijaństwie teologii i duszpasterstwa. Wielcy doktorzy Kościoła zachodniego, Ambroży z Mediolanu i Augustyn z Hippony, inspirując się dotychczasowymi refleksjami, rozwijają tę myśl i starają się wykorzystać duszpastersko. Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje próbę zestawienia myśli obu autorów, akcentując zwłaszcza ich pasterskie nauczanie. Dostrzegając źródła powiązania myśli mariologicznej z eklezjologiczną w postaciach biblijnych niewiast, rozważa dwa główne jej aspekty: dziewictwo i macierzyństwo zarówno Maryi, jak i Kościoła. Myśla ta stanowiła nie tylko przedmiot teoretycznych rozważań, lecz także ważny element pasterskiego nauczania obu biskupów.

The article is an analysis of the cathegory of Presence in the context of religion. The scope is to show the phenominon of presence as a fundamental cathegory in the aspect of religious existence. Article mentions definitions of presense known in both classical and modern philosophy. Especially interesting for the work is the concept of God’s presence through: the word, the Providence, the world and the mystical experience. The matter of God’s presence is complemented by analisys of God’s secrecy often discussed in the religious literature, especially in the theologhy of spirituality. The text is featuring reciprocal correlation, dialectics of both terms and the consequences for the spiritual life. There are mentioned antropological conditions of the posibility for religious relationship, especailly relationship in which the essence is the presence – that are: capax Dei (man’s ability (and need) to relate to the Divine) and quaerere Deum (man’s ability (and need) to seak for Divine).

“You set charity in order in me” (Song 2:4, LXX) is one of the most fundamental biblical texts for the concept of the ordo caritatis. The Author seeks to examine how this text was read in the East and West, analysing the commentary of three Greek authors (Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and Theodoret of Cyrus), and three Latin authors (Augustine of Hippo, John Cassian and Apponius). There commentaries, he notes, agree with one another for the most part, and refer more or less to Origen’s exegesis of this verse. However, some differences can be noted. The Eastern Fathers, for example, hold that, in the order of charity, the criterion of merit is more important than the criterion of blood relationship; that is to say, the greater love is to be shown to those who have been born in Christ (cf. 1Cor 4:15) over those born of the flesh. Only the Eastern Fathers explore what the ordo caritatis means also in relation to one’s enemies. The Western Fathers, for their part, tend to underline the moral aspect of the ordo caritatis, insofar as upholding that order is virtue, while infringing it is sin. In this regard, a casuistic approach can occur in their commentary more frequently than in those of the Eastern Fathers. The novelty of the commentaries of the Western Fathers is also found in their reflection on the ordo caritatis within the Holy Trinity, as well as the manner in which they expand the embrace of this order to other categories of people: friends, fellow citizens, strangers. Some of the Western Fathers (Apponius) apply the ordo caritatis not only to people but also to works of mercy, while others (Augustine) bring out the aesthetic element in the ordo caritatis, noting that the effect of order of any kind, including the order of charity, is beauty.

The article presents the place of martyrdom of both the seven Maccabean brothers and their mother, and the adoration of them according to the Bishop Augustine of Hippo. The worship developed in the 4th century and it also reached Africa. However, it demanded justification, due to the Old Testament character of the revered people. The Bishop provided an opportunity to present the essence of Christian martyrdom and loyalty to Christ and His people, to emphasize the value of the testimony and its authenticity. He also encouraged to polemics with Judaism and some of the pagan practices which were sometimes taken also by the Christians.

The monastic movement among Christians appeared rather spontaneously and initially it did not have any community dimension. When it began to take organized forms it encountered a wide variety of responses from other Christians, from some admiration to critique. The article attempts to answer the question of the meaning and the role of monastic communities towards the Church according to St. Augustine. It presents, how the Bishop of Hippo perceived the purpose of separating the communicty from society, and to what extent he was aware of the value of the involvement of monks in the life of the whole Church.

St. Augustine, beside his typically autobiographical work – Confessiones, left a number of statements about himself in his many writings, among which the outstanding place is taken by his Enarrationes in Psalmos. By reflecting on the person of St. Augustine, through the prism of his statements in Enarrationes in Psalmos, one can reveal and realize the great richness of what regards his moral and spiritual life. Augustine, being a priest, then a bishop, and fulfilling the office of preacher, refers to his life from before his conversion, recalls his baptism, and analyzes his commitment to the new way of life. His conversion and baptism are of particular importance by driving him from one stage of life to the other. This second phase of his biography, however, does not cancel out some struggles with worldly temptations and various adversities in pastoral ministry. The leading of „perfect” life is embodied in the work of God’s mercy. Confessiones efficiently assist to discover Augustine of Enarrationes in Psalmos, who reveals his heart and his person for the benefit of people entrusted to his pastoral care.
