The paper has been prepared on the basis of parish registers in the parish oLthe Holy Heart of Jesus in New Britain, Conn. The registers kept since 1909 proved to be very valuable for the study. On the basis of those registers the material concerning the number of Polish population in/New Britain, Conn. (table 1), the number of children in the families (table 2, 3) and the number of adults (table 4) has been gathered. The registers of marriages helped to compute the number of Polish married couples (table 5) and to find out the places of origin in Poland of the spouses (table 6) as well as to define the marring seasons (table 7). On the basis of registers of births and baptisms the number and sex of babies have been calculated (table 8) as well as the c^iild-bearing seasons (table 10), twin births, illegitimate births and also baptisms of adults (table 11). On the basis of the register bf deaths, preserved since 1912, the number and age of the dead and also the birth-rate of the Polish population in New Britain, Conn. (table 13) have been computed.

The present article is founded upon source materials provided by two Polish parishes in New Britain, Conn., the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Cross. The censuses regularly made by the parishes nearly every two years, in the years 1909-1951 constitute an excellent source for studying demographic problems of Polish Americans in New Britain. Registers of births, baptisms, marriages and deaths make another set of records. As a rule they have been preserved in every Polish parish since it’s foundation. Registers on marriages seem particularly valuable since they provide detailed information about geographical origins of Polish emigrants. Registers of Confirmations and First Holy Communions as well as registers of Easter confessions and records of visiting the sick parishioners make a body of records of sacred functions. Economic affairs of the parish are revealed in well-preserved ledgers, records of parish bazaars, special collections etc. They provide information concerning financial resources of the parish, parish school, convent and monastery, presbytery, church servants etc. Records of religious and national fraternities and societies together with the minutes of Parish Council meetings form an extremely valuable complex revealing cultural, social and religious activities of the parish. The most important, however, seem the records of parish announcements, or, in the later period, the parish Bulletin. They provide an excellent current illustration of the life of a Polish parish with all its numerous aspects, religious, cultural, social and national. Records of parish announcements are usually written in Polish, while the parish Bulletin is published in both English and Polish. School records constitute a separate source of information. It seems that any more profound research into the religious, cultural, social and national history could not be carried out without relying on such source materials and archives. Especially as the Polish parish in the U. S. A. used to be and still is the most important centre of social bond for our emigrants and their offspring.

The above paper has been based on my personal experience and research on the history of the Polish-American parishes in Connecticut, the U.S.A. Parochial news /transformed into bulletins after 1950/ constitute the most valuable archival source in the Polish-American parishes. They present a comprehensive histrical material on the pastoral care in the parish as well as its social, cultural and informal life. Annual Reports of the parish, sent to the Bishop’s office on the turn of each year, are also of considerable value. As a matter of fact, these reports are collected mostly in the diocesan archives. They supply information on the movements of parishioners, the existing Church societies and organizations, participation in the sacraments, and above all, the financial and economic life of the parish. The Sacramental Reports /the numbers of baptism, the First Holy Communion, Confirmation, matrimonies and eaths/ are of primary importance for the research on demography and assimilation. The records of the Easter Communion are of similar value. Moreover, the reports of various fraternities, Church and national societies excellently present the social and national life of Polonia, Next, such archival collections as censuses, cash books and accounts casually inform about the sacramental life, services, missions etc. The archival materials of the parish school may additionally touch upon some aspects of the religious life of the parish, the theatre and so on. All these sources contribute a lot to the research on the religious national, cultural, and social life of Polish-Americans.

Der Artikel enthält eine kritische Edition des Berichtes des Apostolischen Vikars über den Zustand des Apostolischen Vikariats in Krakau, der der Konzilskongregation in Rom am 6. Juli 1872 übergeben wurde. Sein Verfasser ist Bischof Antoni Junosza Galecki. Diese Bericht stammt aus einer für die Krakauer Diözese besonders schwierigen Zeit, als ihr Territorium infolge der Teilungen Polens ebenfalls aufgeteilt war und die Diözese selbst auf den Status Apostolischer Vikariate in Krakau und Kielce degradiert worden war. Dieser Sachverhalt verursachte eine Stagnation im religiösen Leben und führte zur Degradation der polnischen Kirche in diesen Gebieten. Bischof Galecki präsentiert in seinem in acht Kapitel gegliederten Bericht den Zustand des Apostolischen Vikariats in Krakau recht detailliert. Die einzelnen Kapitel widmet er folgenden Fragen: dem materiellen Zustand der Kirchen und kirchlichen Einrichtungen, den eigenen pastoralen und pontifikalen Aktivitäten, dem Diözesanklerus, dem Ordensklerus, den Ordensfrauen, dem Priesterseminar (unter Berücksichtigung der ratio studiorum), den Bruderschaften und frommen Stiftungen sowie einer Charakteristik der religiösen Haltungen der Katholiken in der Diözese. Der Edition ist eine Einführung vorweggestellt, die die Umstände der Entstehung des Apostolischen Vikariats in Krakau und seiner Besetzung durch Bischof Galecki aufzeigt sowie ein Lebensbild des Bischofs liefert.
