In this text the author presents the short history of translations studies and their evolution in the last 70 years. It has to be stressed out that during this period the relations between translation studies and linguistics were very closed. Even now when translation studies are recognised as an independent scientific domain at the universities they still have a strong relationship with many branches of linguistics. More over this interdisciplinary character of translation studies can be seen in the contemporary researches. In the article this theses is exemplified by the relations between translation, conversation analysis and semiology. Also it is underlying the role of the person of translator. The author’s postulate is to use in the description of this scientific field the appellation in plural: translation studies.

In this article the author describes the realization of the LLP international project: Subtitling and Language Learning. First, she presents the context of the realization of this project. The supposed importance of subtitles in LL still needs to be studied empirically. It is a longitudinal project at the European level with several languages and regarding different types of learners. Second, the author suggests some results coming from the research concerning the possibility of use of these materials in language teaching. Finally, she shows some weak points of the conducting of the project, such as the difficulty of so many combinations of languages, so many levels of learners, formal and non-formal context of teaching.

In this text the author presents three concepts which are sometimes used interchangeably and which, in essence, relate to different spheres of human communication. Firstly, the concept of intersemiotic translation – introduced by Jakobson – which has been found to have been interpreted not quite in line with the author's intention and which denotes translation of linguistic messages via nonlinguistic messages. Verbo-visual translation pertains to the kind of translation employed broadly by the media, in all contexts where a translated text is accompanied by various forms of pictures. The author endeavors to elucidate the concept of picture and the relation between the text and the picture in constructing the sense of the message. Finally, the issue of a translation which is, not quite correctly, referred to as audiovisual translation, in which a translator deals with the spoken text and the written text while they appear on the cinema, television and computer screens. The whole text is crowned by a call for the introduction of issues relating to semiology in the broad sense of its meaning to the training of translators.
