The data were collected on the basis of the findings of diagnostic examinations performed by 22 veterinary laboratories in Poland in 1980—1988. In that period of time the morbidity and sporadic mor­talities of carp fry due to Dactylogyrus were observed only in 10—89 ponds (1.2—7.0% of 1200 carp fry ponds existing in Poland), whereas the asymptomatic carrier state took place in 286—841 ponds (24— 70%). In the same time the morbidity and sporadic mortalities of carp fry caused by Gyrodactylus were noted in 5—34 ponds (0.4 to 2.8%) and the asympto­matic carrier state in 85—266 ponds (7.0—22%). The date indicate that the asymptomatic prevalence of Dactylogyrus infections are very frequent in fish farms in Poland, however, the economical losses provoked by dactylogyrosis are rather slight. The Gyrodactylus infections represent still smaller economical problem than dactylogyrosis. It is probable that this favourable epdzootical situation is the result of preventive methods applied in breeding ponds being under the control of many veterinary labo­ratories and the common use of phosphoorganic com­pounds in the control of dactylogyrosis and gyrodactylosis.

In the future, crises related to power supply dependability will grow. The problem is related to rapid population increase, accompanied by doubled energy demand, coupled with the depletion of primary fossil-fuel based energy sources. The future lies in ground-heat, solar, tidal, and wind sources for power supply. These energy sources will supplement traditional primary sources and be enhanced by new technologies based on innovatory developments. This should indicate a new focus for energy sources, not to be limited to purchasing ready-to-use equipment or technologies. By this means we will endeavor to maintain a reliable and efficient power-production system.

Kryzysy, dotyczące bezpieczeństwa energetycznego, będą z czasem narastać. Wynika to m.in. z gwałtownego wzrostu ilości ludności, któremu towarzyszy parokrotnie zwiększone zapotrzebowanie na energię i wyczerpywanie się zasobów tradycyjnych nośników energii. Przyszłość należy do energii ze źródeł odnawialnych - energii cieplnej, prądowej czy wiatrowej. Energie te będą się uzupełniać, wzbogacać o nowe technologie i bazować na nowych osiągnięciach. Powinno to być wskazówką, na jaki rodzaj energii się teraz nastawić tak, aby nie ograniczać się w przyszłości jedynie do kupowania gotowych urządzeń czy technologii. W ten sposób dążyć się będzie do własnego bezpieczeństwa energetycznego.

In some instances, from appearently healthy fish internal organs various bacteria were isolated. Schäperclaus and Mann (22) found that at suboptimal temperatures (0-10°C) carp had asymptomatic infections with bacteria belonging to the genera Aeromonas and Pseudomonas. Bisset (5) was the first to investigate the effect of temperature on the presence of saprophytic water bacteria in the fish tissues. He found that at 10°C, or below, fish frequently contained bacteria in their tissues without becaming diseased. According to Evelyn and Mc Dermott (10) baderia representing genera Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Achromobacter, Alcaligenes, Flavobacterium, Aerobacter, Escherichia, Paracolobacterium, Lactobacillus, Micrococcus, Bacillus and Brevibacterium were isolated from various fresh water fish internal organs. Similar bacteria were also isolated from white perch (Roccus americanus) in an estuarine environment (Allen and Pelzar, 1). Bullock and Snieszko (7) isolated from blood and kidney of healthy trout low numbers of bacteria representing the genera Pseudomonas, Aeromonas and Flavobacterium. In adition, sera from these trout had agglutinins against some of the isolated bacteria, and bacterial types found in trout were the same as those cultured from race way water in which fish were raised. To further extent these observations to Poland, bacteriological examinations of the kidney, spleen and liver of appearently healthy carp (Cyprinus carpio) were undertaken with a purpose to determine the kind and number of live bacteria present in these organs. The results were to enlighten the fish bacterial disease ecology.

Badaniom poddano próbki mięśni i wątrób pobrane od karpi w latach 1995-1997 z różnych stawów hodowlanych na terenie kraju. W analizowanych tkankach ryb oznaczono ołów, kadm, rtęć, arsen, cynk i miedź. Stwierdzone stężenia oznaczanych pierwiastków toksycznych (Pb, Cd, Hg i As) były niskie i nie przekraczały dopuszczalnych limitów obowiązujących dla ryb.

During 1995-1997, samples of muscles and liver of 311 carps were collected at fish farms in selected regions of Poland. Levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, zinc and copper were determined by different techniques of atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentrations of the toxic elements (Pb, Cd, Hg, As) in carp tissues were relatively low. Lead and cadmium were rather seldom detected in the muscle (15% and 35%, respectively). Mean levels of lead in the fish tissues were around the detection limit of the method, i.e. 0.01 mg/kg. The same was true for cadmium except for the 1995 results, which were considerably higher (0.032 mg/kg for muscle) and 10% muscle sample Cd levels exceeded 0.05 mg/kg, which is the maximum level admissible in Poland. Hg and As were found to be present in alt carp tissues, but the concentrations of those elements were within the admissible limits. Our results indicate that the toxic elements at the concentrations detected in carp tissues are not dangerous to human health.

The pathogenicity of 68 strains of A. hydrophila and 44 of A. sobria was assessed in two-year-old carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). The fish were selected from erythro- dermatitis-free farms and were adapted to the laboratory environment for one month; then they were infected with a subepidermal bacterial suspension. The inoculum contained 107 bacterial cells in 0,2 ml of 0.85 per cent beffered salt solution (PBS). The haemolytic activity was tested on horse blood agar (a base with 5 per cent defibrinated blood) and the proteolytic activity on a base with 15 per cent of gelatine. The individual strains of A. hydrophila and A. sobria displayed different haemolytic and proteolytic activity and also different pathogenicity. Pronounced haemolytic activity was found in 93 per cent of highly pathogenic strains of A. hydrophila and in 87.5 per cent of distinctly pathogenic strains of A. sobria. The above properties were also noted in the 45 per cent and 10 per cent mildly pathogenic strains, respectively. However, these characteristics were also found in 15 per cent nonpathogenic strains of A. hydrophila. Combined pronounced haemolytic and proteolytic activity were displayed in 90 per cent of highly pathogenic strains of A. hydrophila and 87.5 per cent of A. sobria. Only one non-pathogenic strain of A. hydrophila also possessed a marked haemolytic and proteolytic activity.

Methods of fish cell cultures were based upon those orginally developed for mammalian cells and were modified to fit the needs of cold-blooded verteibrate cells (1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17). The application of fish cell techniques has brought about the isolation of several fish viruses: IPN - infectious pancreatic necrosis (20), VHS – virus of haemorrhagic septicemia (9), GFA - grunt fin agent (3) and virus of lymphocystosis (20). Recent advances in fish tissue and cell culture have been largely restricted to trout and tench (6, 8, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20), and carp have been given rather limited attention (10, 11, 13). These investigations were principally concerned with cell culture which would be useful in working with those fish diseases for which viral etiology had been either stated or postulated. A special attention will be paid to carp dropsy and swim bladder inflammation, either being the frequent cause of great losses in carp population. More detailed investigations over this major communicable fish diseases in Poland are also necessary because uniform system of health of national and international traffic in live fish is planned.
