The paper provides a simple and analytical method which can be used to give estimates of the wave-induced bottom shear stress for very rough beds and mud beds in shallow water based on wind statistics in deep water. This is exemplified by using long-term wind statistics from the northern North Sea, and by providing examples representing realistic field conditions. Based on, for example, global wind statistics, the present results can be used to make estimates of the bottom shear stress in shallow water.

This paper provides some probabilistic properties of the deep water wave steepness and the spectral wave steepness by using distributions based on data from the Norwegian continental shelf. Here the average statistical properties represented by the mean value and the standard deviation of the two steepness parameters are considered. Examples of results for the wave steepness are given for a Phillips spectrum and a family of JONSWAP spectra for wind sea, and for sea states described by a joint frequency table of significant wave height and mean zero-crossing wave period for combined wind sea and swell. The results for the spectral wave steepness are obtained by using a joint distribution of significant wave height and spectral wave steepness, and the average statistical features are given for joint frequency tables of significant wave height and mean zero-crossing wave period from three locations on the Norwegian continental shelf.

This note provides estimates of the mean whitecap coverage and the mean sea spray aerosol flux based on long-term wind statistics from the Northern North Sea. Here the improved sea spray aerosol production flux model by Callaghan (2013) is used. The results are compared with those in Myrhaug et al. (2015) based on long-term wave statistics from the Northern North Sea and the North Atlantic.

This paper addresses the Stokes transport velocity for deep water random waves in given layers in the water column based on wind statistics, which can be estimated by the simple analytical tool provided here. Results are exemplified by using the Phillips and Pierson-Moskowitz model wave spectra together with long-term wind statistics from one location in the northern North Sea and from four locations in the North Atlantic. The results are relevant for e.g. assessing the drift of marine litter in the ocean based on, for example, global wind statistics.

This note provides estimates of the mean sea spray aerosol flux based on long-term wave statistics using the whitecap method based on the limiting steepness and threshold vertical acceleration criteria. The aim is to present a procedure demonstrating how global wave statistics can be used to give estimates of the long-term aerosol flux. These estimates are obtained by using bivariate distributions of significant wave height and characteristic wave period, representing open ocean deep water waves in the Northern North Sea and the North Atlantic.
