Background: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) by obtaining information about the electrical properties of tissues by using raw bioelectrical impedance measurements [resistance, reactance, phase angle (PA)] is widely used in evaluating body-composition. The objective of this study was to investigate phase angle in a healthy population. Methods: In this study BIA examinations were conducted on 75 healthy population (67 men and 8 women). The mean age of the group was 56.56±12.05 years, BMI 26.12±4.19 kg/m2 and height 171.23±8.65 cm. Results: At 50 kHz the value of resistance was 511.02±65.35 ohm, reactance 48.48±8.18 ohm and PA 5.44±0.75º. Conclusions: Further observations of a larger group of individuals are needed to assess reference ranges of impedance values (resistance, reactance, phase angle) for the Polish population.

The aim of the study was to test the influence of tuftsin analogue TP- 1, its terminal fragment- tetrapeptide Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro and L-arginine on the escape reaction induced by electric stimulation of nucleus ventromedialis of the hypothalamus (Vmh). The experiments were carried out on 29 male rabbits of the Chinchilla breed (2900-3500g). The studied substances were administered in doses of 0.5 μmol/kg of body weight into lateral cerebral ventricle (icv). The period of experiment (3h) was divided into 10-min intervals. Vmh stimulation was performed every 10 min (18 stimulations). The latency time (LT) of escape reaction was considered to be the period between the beginning of Vmh stimulation and the escape reaction. Each of tested substances caused a significant increase of LT of the escape reaction. The increase of LT after icv administration of L-arginine was statistically smaller than the increase of LT after icv administration of tetrapeptide and TP-1.

BD-1158 is a new 1,4 benzodiazepine derivative. The purpose of the present experiments was to test the influence of this substance on the behaviour of rabbits under stress conditions, induced by electrical stimulation of ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH). The experiments were performed for 4 subsequent days in a group of 10 rabbits. On the first day the electrode was implanted into VMH. On the second day the spontaneous behaviour in stress conditions was tested. On the third day 1 ml of 1 % starch solution was administered intraperitoneally. On the fourth day BD-1158 was administered intraperitoneally at a dose 10mg/kg diluted in starch solution up to 1 ml, 35 minutes before the beginning of the experiment. Six phases of behaviour were estimated. It was concluded that in extreme conditons BD-1158 has a strong anxiolytic and sedative effect. lts influence concerns a considerable extension of the comfort phase and decrease of the tension phase. BD-1158 does not influence the animals' activity and attention (the orientation-searching phase and grooming). It decreases eating and drinking.
