The turn of the century is a time when new political relations between European states are in the process of formation, with international organizations progressively developing. Parallel to the concept of the European Union, regional and sub-regional initiatives emerge, ones that are related directly do problems and challenges faced by local communities. This article addresses the dichotomous character of the dispute concerning the real significance of the Visegrad initiative. It attempts to answer the question pertaining to the actual impact of the organization on subregional security as far as its political and military potential is concerned.
