A total of 47 avian faecal samples of wild waterfowl (great cormorant — Phalacrocorax carbo, great crested grebe — Podiceps cristatus, white stork — Ciconia ciconia) trapped in the eastern Slovakia were screened for the presence of human pathogenic microsporidia by microscopy and real-time SYBR Green PCR method using species primers and sequenced. Microscopic analysis showed presence in 32 samples (29 cormorants, 3 dippers). Microsporidial DNA (Encephalitozoon cuniculi genotype I) was identified in 19 faeces samples (40.4%) namely cormorants in 17 out of 40, one dipper of 5 and a stork out of 2. The present work describes three new host species of the bird population in microsporidium Encephalitozoon cuniculi genotype I which confirms the theory of low specificity of this species.

During a routine inspection of the mosquito fauna in the Košická Basin (Eastern Slovakia), in one of the monitored locations we have caught 4 females of the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus, using the CO2 baited CDC traps. Occurrence of this particular mosquito has already been reported in many European countries; in Slovakia, however, this is the first finding ever. The finding of Ae. albopictus extends the list of the mosquito fauna in Slovakia to 50 species and Slovakia thus ranks among other 20 European countries where this mosquito was observed. The presence of Ae. albopictus increased the probability of transmission of canine and human dirofilariosis in urban environment.

Toxic effects of Reslin 25 SE aerosol and Snip bait on a sensitive strain (SRS/WHO) and wild resistant population (Polianka) of the housefly were investigated. Higher than 90% mortality and knockdown effect was observed in houseflies exposed to Reslin 25 SE aerosol for ten minutes in laboratory and field experiments. The Snip bait caused 90% mortality and knockdown effect in the sensitive strain after 8-min exposure while demonstration of toxicity in the wild strain was decelerated considerably. Langer than 60 min action was needed to produce 90% mortality and knockdown effect in flies of the latter strain. A combined method of control of resistant flies using Reslin 25 SE aerosol and Snip bait was tested in practice in pig houses. During the 11 experimental weeks, from June 14 to August 28, 83 % (67-93) effectiveness was reached on average. The results obtained point to the high effectiveness of non-persistent insecticides when we apply them in combination using their aerosol and bait forms.

In the present study four different cell cultures, derived from rabbit kidney (RK13), rat, and murine liver (WBF344 and Hepa 1c1c7) and insect origin (Sf21) were used to examine the effects of chlorpyrifos. Sf21 cells were the most sensitive to chlorpyrifos, with significant suppression of their proliferative activity ranging from 10⁻¹-10⁻⁵ M. However, significant suppression of proliferative activity also was recorded in mammalian cell cultures Hepa 1c1c7 (10⁻¹-10⁻³ M), WBF344 (10⁻¹-10⁻² M), and RK13 ( 10⁻¹ M). A cytopathic effect and LDH leakage into the medium was observed in RK 13 ( 10⁻¹-10⁻³ M) > WBF344 and Hepa 1c1c7 cells ( 10⁻¹-10⁻² M) > Sf21 ( 10⁻¹ M) compared to solvent control. Our results indicate that chlorpyrifos exposure caused a species-dependent decrease in cell proliferation and cell membrane damage.
