Background. Bassan barbel, Barbus pectoralis Heckel, 1843, is widely distributed in the lakes and river systems of Turkey and its neighbouring countries. Bassan barbel is a fish species of commercial value. The aim of his study was to provide necessary biological features of bassan population from Kemer Reservoir. Materials and Methods. Biological aspects of Bassan barbel were studied based on a total of 206 specimens collected from Kemer Reservoir, during the period December 2004–November 2005. The fish age was determined from scales. Length–weight relation and Fulton’s condition factor were used to evaluate fish condition. Results. The fishwere from1 to 6 year-old. Fork length (FL)–weight (W) relationswere estimated asW= 0.011 • FL2.980 for all specimens studied. The estimated growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation were: L∞ = 34.8 cm,W∞ = 549.58 g, K = 0.168 • year–1 and t0 = –1.590 year for all specimens examined. Conclusion. The fish from Kemer Reservoir were characterized by an average growth rate and it was observed that the specimen grew fast during the first two years of life. The reason why bassan barbel had low conditio values is probably because the environmental conditions in the reservoir were poor.

Background. The Izmir nase, Chondrostoma holmwoodii (Boulenger, 1896), an endemic species for the inland waters of Turkey, is in the category of DD “Data Deficient” in the list of IUCN Red Data Book. There are insufficient data on the biological characteristics of the species in the literature. The aim of this study was to obtain the growth characteristics of Izmir nase population from Western Anatolia and compare them with the previous data reported in literature. Materials and Methods. Biological features of Izmir nase were examined based on a total of 1208 specimens collected from Tahtalı Dam Lake during the period May 2006–April 2007. Age of fish was determined by reading scales. Length–weight relation and the von Bertalanffy equation were used to evaluate the fish growth. Results. Scales reading indicated the presence of 5 age classes. The computed growth parameters were: L∞ = 29.19 cm, k = 0.177 · year–1 and t0 = –3.258 year–1 for both sexes. The length-weight relations were estimated as W = 0.019 L2.97, W = 0.012 L3.11 and W = 0.011 L3.13 for females, males, and both sexes combined, respectively. Conclusion. The Izmir nase from Tahtalı Dam Lake was characterized by linear growth and it was observed that the fish grew faster during the first two years. Many endemic fish species in inland waters of Turkey are under the threat of extinction due to human activities (pollution, drought, dam construction, habitat degradation, and overfishing) but the species is not threatened by these factors in the study area.

The paper discusses the North Sea – Mediterranean corridor, part of the Trans-European transport network. A brief discussion on the aspects of multimodality and the possible modes of transport involved in transporting inland freight is presented followed by an introduction to main IT systems that can be implemented to increase the efficiency of freight transport. Presented also is a description on the envisaged investments in freight corridors in Europe. An assessment of information flows is also offered. The study concludes that the concept of a freight corridor should be extended to a network in order for more global benefits to be experienced.
