Plutarch, beside Homer, Socrates and Alexander the Great, was one of the important figures in Norwid’s intellectual and artistic biography. Apart from Herodotus he was the main source of Norwid’s knowledge of Greek history and culture. Norwid’s readings are also inscribed in the reception of Plutarch by the French language readers, as he read his works in Amyot’s translation of the beginning of the 19th century that was so important for French literature. The significance of Plutarch for Norwid’s works is particularly well seen when the influence of the Greek historian is considered on writing the poem Epimenides and the drama Cleopatra and Ceasar. Both these works are a proof that he intensively and creatively thought over some of the Parallel Lives, that he treated as sources of historical and cultural knowledge.

The article is concerned with a monograph that discusses the presence of symbols and allegories in Cyprian Norwid’s works. It is an important work raising a theme that is fundamental for modern studies of the poet. The studies gathered in the volume try to answer the question if Norwid is more of a continuator of Romantic literature, or rather he predicts literary trends characteristic of the beginning of the 20th century.

The review discusses Magdalena Siwiec’s book which refers to Alfred de Musset’s and Juliusz Słowacki’s romantic poetry. It is the poetry which is understood as a record of human, language, and literature experiencing a crisis. A poet’s attitude to the source of inspiration is made the main theme of Siwiec’s study, and considering such definition of the subject of research also to the literary tradition as well as to the poets most powerfully influencing others.

Recenzja omawia książkę Magdaleny Siwiec dotyczącą poezji romantycznej Alfreda de Musseta i Juliusza Słowackiego. Takiej poezji, która jest rozumiana jako zapis doświadczenia kryzysu człowieka, języka i literatury. Głównym tematem pracy stał się stosunek poety do źródła natchnienia, a w wyniku takiego zdefiniowania przedmiotu badań także stosunek do literackiej tradycji i do poetów o największej mocy oddziaływania na innych.
