The subject matter of this article encompasses broader issues related to the professional ethics and the professional autonomy of architects in Poland. The architect's ethics embraces deontological elements as well as metaphysical ones, sometimes taking the form - as in the timeless book 'Uczniowie cieśli' (Carpenter's disciples') by Professor Lech Niemojewski - of a strictly religious reference1. Closely related to the professional deontology of architects are the practical aspects, to which special attention is paid in this paper. It presents, within the context of ethical principles, a selection of chosen problems and the risks associated with performing a function in the bodies of the Chamber of Architects of the Republic of Poland (IA RP) conducting disciplinary proceedings.

Etykę normatywną zawodu architekta w Polsce stanowi Kodeks Etyki Zawodowej Architektów (KEZA). Prowadzenie postępowań dyscyplinarnych w Izbie Architektów Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (IARP) zostało, w myśl odpowiednich przepisów, powierzone rzecznikom odpowiedzialności zawodowej, sądom dyscyplinarnym oraz radom - na szczeblu okręgowym i krajowym. Pełnienie funkcji w tych organach może być wykonywane wyłącznie przez członków samorządu zawodowego. Na podstawie dotychczasowych doświadczeń w postawionym obszarze problemowym zasady etyki, a pełnienie funkcji w organach IARP prowadzących postępowania dyscyplinarne można zidentyfikować najistotniejsze zagrożenia dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania odpowiedzialności dyscyplinarnej architektów. Są to przede wszystkim: wady obowiązującego prawa, niewystarczająca jego znajomość przez architektów, społeczny charakter pracy rzeczników i sędziów, przedawnienia wszczęcia postępowań oraz wiele innych. Analiza problemów i roli odpowiedzialności dyscyplinarnej skłania do refleksji nad modelem kodeksu etyki architekta, który z jednej strony nie byłby pozbawiony wzniosłych aspektów filozoficznych, a z drugiej szczegółowo określałby cele i obowiązki. Dobre prawo umożliwia organom prowadzącym postępowanie formułowanie jednolitych wykładni w poszczególnych sprawach.

Among the posttranslational modifications of proteins, glycosylation is probably the most abundant one. Two main types of protein glycosylation have been known for several years, namely N-glycosylation and O-glycosylation. Their biochemical properties, structure and biosynthesis, have been described extensively. Their biological functions are also known for a number of proteins, although in many cases the function remains speculative despite continuous efforts. A few years ago, a new type of protein glycosylation was found, which is different from the above-mentioned ones. It was called C-glycosylation, since the sugar is linked to the protein through a carbon-carbon bond. This article reviews the biochemistry of C-glycosylation, the biosynthetic pathway and structural requirements. Possible biological functions of this modification are also discussed.

Extensible Markup Language was mainly designed to easily represent documents; however, it has evolved and is now widely used for the representation of arbitrary data structures. There are many Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to aid software developers with processing XML data. There are also many languages for querying and transforming XML, such as XPath or XQuery, which are widely used in this field. However, because of the great flexibility of XML documents, there are no unified data storing and processing standards, tools, or systems. On the other hand, a relational model is still the most-commonly and widely used standard for storing and querying data. Many Database Management Systems consist of components for loading and transforming hierarchical data. DB2 pureXML or Oracle SQLX are some of the most-recognized examples. Unfortunately, all of them require knowledge of additional tools, standards, and languages dedicated to accessing hierarchical data (for example, XPath or XQuery). Transforming XML documents into a (quasi)relational model and then querying (transformed) documents with SQL or SQL–like queries would significantly simplify the development of data-oriented systems and applications. In this paper, an implementation of the SQLxD query system is proposed. The XML documents are converted into a quasi-relational model (preserving their hierarchical structure), and the SQL–like language based on SQL-92 allows for efficient data querying.

So far only little data have been available concerning the eliciting capacity of well defined glycan molecules isolated from plant pathogens. This study brings new information about changes in plant cells caused by fungal pathogens. Sugar fractions derived from glycoproteins isolated from the fungus Fusarium sp. M7-1 have been tested here as signaling molecules. The ability of three O-glycan fractions (named in this work in- ducer I, II, III) to trigger responses in Rubus protoplasts has been examined. It was found that inducer III was the most efficient as it elicited changes in the levels of phenylpropanoid pathway intermediates in relation to phenylalanine-ammonia lyase (PAL) activation.
