Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease which affects almost 1% of the population above the age of 60. It is is characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the striatum and substantia nigra, coupled with the formation of intracellular Lewy bodies in degenerating neurons. Recent evidence suggests endoplasmic reticulum stress as a common and prominent occurrence in the progression of Parkinson's disease pathogenesis in the affected human brain. One of the cellular defense mechanism to combat endoplasmic reticulum stress due to excessive protein accumulation is through activation of the unfolded protein response pathway. In this review we focus on the impact and role of this unfolded protein response as a causative factor of Parkinson's disease leading to neurodegeneration.

This paper presents a novel histogram thresholding technique based on the beam theory of solid mechanics and the minimization of ambiguity in information. First, a beam theory based histogram modification process is carried out. This beam theory based process considers a distance measure in order to modify the shape of the histogram. The ambiguity in the overall information given by the modified histogram is then minimized to obtain the threshold value. The ambiguity minimization is carried out using the theories of fuzzy and rough sets, where a new definition of rough entropy is presented. The applications of the proposed scheme in performing object and edge extraction in images are reported and compared with those of a few existing classical and ambiguity minimization based schemes for thresholding. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of both qualitative and quantitative measures.

The Indian brick industry is an unorganized sector in which large numbers of migrant women workers are employed. A survey was conducted on 62 women workers working in different brickfields of West Bengal to assess their physiological workload, nutritional profile, total energy expenditure and energy balance. Energy intake was calculated using physiological fuel values of carbohydrate, fat and protein. From the results it is seen that 13% of the sample population falls under severe (grade III) chronic energy deficiency. The average daily consumption of the workers was comparatively lower than their daily energy expenditure, considering the nature of the job which falls under heavy to extremely heavy categories. This negative energy balance is effectively observed in the nutritional anthropometry data. Thus, an immediate ergonomics intervention with better nutrition should be implemented to improve the health status of the workers so they can safely continue to work for a longer period.

In this study the ages of Capoeta trutta (Heckel 1843) inhabiting Keban Dam Lake were determined from scales. The mean fork lengths determined using the back-calculation method were l₁=70.59, l₂=119.37, l₃=167.53, l₄=195.97, l₅=221.03, l₆=250.52, l₇=274.63 and l₈=300.38 mm for males, l₁=68.87, l₂ =117.03, l₃=166.34, l₄=203.91, l₅=230.17, l₆=248.20, l₇=267.98 and l₈=294.69 mm for females, l₁=63.45, l₂=105.92, l₃=151.54, l₄=188.20, l₅=212.33, l₆=245.05, l₇=270.85 and l₈=295.97 mm for all fish samples. The calculated length of any of the age groups was always smaller than the real length measured for the same age group. The gap between calculated and measured lengths increased when the scales of older fish were used in the calculations.

Celem badań było określenie wieku gatunku ryb karpiowatych, Capoeta trutta (Heckel 1843) zamieszkującego zbiornik Keban (Turcja) na podstawie łusek (rys. 1 i 2). Średnia długość ogonowa, określona na podstawie metody odczytów wstecznych, wynosiła: l₁=70,59, l₂=119,37, l₃=167,53, l₄=195,97, l₅=221,03, l₆=250,52, l₇=274,63, l₈=300,38 mm dla samców; l₁=68,87, l₂=117,03, l₃=166,34, l₄=203,91, l₅=230,17, l₆=248,20, l₇=267,98, l₈=294,69 mm dla samic; l₁=63,45, l₂=105,92, l₃=151,54, l₄=188,20, l₅=212,33, l₆=245,05, l₇=270,85, l₈=295,97 mm dla całej grupy ryb (tab. 1, rys. 3,4, 5). Długość ryb, w przypadku każdej grupy wiekowej, określona na podstawie odczytów wstecznych była zawsze mniejsza od rozmiarów rzeczywistych. Różnica ta wzrastała, gdy do obliczeń używano łusek od starszych osobników.
