This workfocuses on the potentialities offered by a software approach to the acquisition and tracking of the Global Positioning System (GPS) signal and to the navigation processing. Improved flexibility in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) applications and the possibility of introducing new solutions with little or no impact on the hardware are the most apprealing aspects of a software receiver. After reviewing some principles of the receiver architecture and functionalities, the analysis, topography and remote with software modules and portions of Matlab code developed are also shown.

The paper presents the results of GPS and EGNOS satellite experiments performed in Pompeia's archeological site. The main goals of the experiments were as follows: 1. Establishment of GPS control point network on the streets of this ancient city, 2. Examination of GPS/RTK OTF method with different types of receivers and teletransmission lines, 3. Examination of EGNOS (ESTB) performance and positioning accuracy. The experiments were conducted jointly by the teams of Italian Universities in: Trieste, Napoli Seconda, Salerno, Catania, Cagliari, Pisa and Padova and the team of the Chair of Satellite Geodesy and Navigation of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland in July 2003 and thanks to the very kind and valuable help ofPompei's Sopraintendenza Archeologica. Different receivers were taking part in the experiments including Ashtech, Javad, Leica, Tumble, Garmin and Magellan receivers. The results of EGNOS (ESTB) satellite positioning are compared with performance of precise RTK OTF method. Estimation of accuracy of ESTB satellite positioning is done. The results are presented and discussed.
