Owing to widely advertized issue of renewal of urban tissue cities gain their chance for re-birth and “second youth”. These entities struggle with degradation and depopulation through, among others, re-discovering cultural, architectural and historical values alike, restructuring postrailway, post-military and post-industrial areas as well as renovation of old housing estates and other damaged building resources. Next to the degradation of the housing substance, another problem of the cities is demographic crisis. The amount of cities’ inhabitants decreases systematically, the process of ageing of society affects more and more aspects of economy and the decline in population growth as well as mass emigration of young people are not promising. Thus main tasks of cities development became tasks of qualitative revival of material resources and human capital. Considering revitalization as a cities revival tool one have to have in mind it cannot concern only the material structure of a city but has to be spread over the broadly understood social issues. Moreover, the revitalization actions have to be based on a new planning model through involving local societies into planning processes. In this way it can contribute to the integration of residents as well as to the larger identification with place of residence which may be an object of their special care in coming years. To summarise, only such integrated and complex attitude as above may bring expected results of increasing the quality of the cities and the Local Revitalisation Programmes, which are one of the requirements of revitalization programmes studies, may essentially contribute.

Entrepreneurshi in european integration conditions is one of the key success factors in a context of individuals, companies or cities and local government units or states alike. In case of individuals entersprise attitude is recognized as a set of personal features. In case of cities it can be measured by sufficiency in gaining European funds and ability to apply them. In the times of globalisation and strong competition between cities ability to efficient management can decide in „the chase for space”. This is even more important since cities play nowadays the basic part in social-economic growth processes and, in consequence, in increasing competitiveness of various types of spatial systems. As a result of numerous functional-spatial changes a lot of city areas have been devastated and other city parts gained a new rank. However, to create harmonious city space starting ventures which restore spatial order and meaning of marginalized areas turned out to be necessary. The rule of maximization of cities value and their real estate by creating high quality of public space is nowadays realized among the others by revitalization programs. The aim of this essay is to indicate the revitalization activities in framework of Integrated Operational Program of Regional Development and Regional Operational Programs, comparison of means dedicated on revitalization and analysis of their application in małopolskie and świętokrzyskie woyevodship in which the results of application contest have been already publicated.

Innovation seen as the development of new methods, tools, new approaches and improvement of the existing processes is generally synonymous with “young” and modern companies. Hardly anyone would expect after 100 years of a company’s existence that it is able to continually meet the highest standards of business and compete on the international market, especially in terms of innovation. An example of such a company is International Business Machines (IBM). The company was founded in 1911 and initially dealt with the production of various equipment: weights, meat slicers, or data storage media, such as punch cards and machines for them. The latter have become over time the most important activity of the corporation. At the turn of the 1960s, IBM introduced hard disk drives, developed the world’s first storage, and introduced to customers the software language Fortran, which is still in use. In 1969, IBM computers were used by NASA during the first man on the moon mission. In 1981, the company created the first personal computer IBM 5150 PC, which the weekly magazine “Time” dubbed “machine of the year”. Thanks to its innovations, regardless of the era, IBM has always been ahead of the reality in which it is located. Today IBM announced that in 2019 it will have a supercomputer, which should come close to matching the power of the human brain. At the moment, BlueGene already copies 4.5% of human brain activity. The activities of such a powerful company are not only associated with market developments. In the 1990s, the company began to focus on new market areas, in particular services. In November this year, IBM introduced the five innovations that over the next five years would significantly improve the quality of life of urban citizens around the world, as well as reduce potential hazards. Therefore, the vision of the company seems to be right – our customer’s success, innovation for us and the world. The purpose of this paper is to present innovative solutions implemented by IBM in terms of technology and services.

Bielsko-Biała podjęła się realizacji projektu „Rewitalizacja bielskiej starówki”, z którym równolegle były realizowane programy przeciwdziałania wykluczeniu społecznemu. Niestety, połączenie interesów mieszkańców z interesami przedsiębiorców czy samorządu jest niezwykle trudne i pomimo zakończenia 6 programów, w których wzięło udział ponad 450 osób, słyszy się wiele negatywnych opinii na temat rewitalizacji, która miała być reakcją na kryzys gospodarczy i zahamowanie rozwoju miasta. Wiele odnowionych kamienic nie znalazło do tej pory użytkowników, a część mieszkańców cały czas czeka na decyzję o przesiedleniu. Wyniki badań potwierdzają, że odnowa elewacji i wymiana stolarki okiennej jest niewystarczająca dla coraz bardziej wymagającego społeczeństwa obywatelskiego.

Services constitute the most significant economic sector in contemporary economies and their rank is still growing. The development of services and innovative production as factor of converting the economy of małopolskie voivodeship acts in a diversified way, both in structural and spatial terms. Some particular groups of activities are marked by the highest pace of growth. They are the services of modern character, performing an important role in the process of economic transformation. The main aim of the study was to characterize the essential changes in the spatial structure of chosen services in małopolskie voivodeship as well as to determine the direction of the inflow of companies into the urban region of Cracow, according to the zones of development. The results indicate that the structure of chosen services in the center-peripheries of małopolskie voivodeship is undergoing transformations and there are some correlations between their development. In particular cases the activities are remote from the demand for them (e.g. consulting firms), which is directly connected with the use of new technologies. Cracow undergoes reallocation of services and industry which is characteristic for the functional transformations of big cities.
