The aim of this work is presentation of principles of work and properties of multimode interference (MMI) structures and their basic applications in optoelectronic circuits. We discuss the principles of simple, mirrored and multiple images formation paying attention to imaging quality, tolerance, losses, and power division in output signals. On the base of it, MMI applications in integrated optic systems - in splitters and couplers NxM technology, modulators and switches in Mach-Zehnder configuration and multiplexers are considered. The possibility of MMI production in gradient-index wavequides made by ion exchange in glass is also presented.

Content available remote A new acoustic emission descriptor for modelled sources of partial discharges

Partial discharges (PD) generated by differently modelled PD sources have been studied by the acoustic emission (AE) method. The results obtained were compared with the measured apparent electric charge values. Acoustic images of the PD phenomena were created by recorded waveforms, phase diagrams, frequency characteristics and calculated amplitude distribution diagrams. Basing on the amplitude distributions, a new AE descriptor --- the ADP descriptor (Amplitude Distribution of Power of AE signal descriptor) was evaluated. The ADP descriptor distinguishes the physical processes connected with the PD. For the described measuring situations, the calculated values of the ADP descriptor show a good correlation of the ADP descriptor values with the value of the apparent electric charge.

Przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania zjawiska propagacji akustycznej fali powierzchniowej do detekcji gazów. Oddziaływanie określonych zewnętrznych wielkości fizycznych na ośrodek propagacji, w tym na samą powierzchnię, wpływa na warunki graniczne zagadnienia propagacji fali powierzchniowej. W przypadku czujników gazu zaburzenie propagacji (prędkości i tłumienia) zachodzi wskutek zmian właściwości mechanicznych i/lub elektrycznych cienkiej warstwy sensorowej naniesionej na powierzchnię falowodu. Wyniki rozważań teoretycznych potwierdzono badaniami eksperymentalnymi.

Presents theoretical possibilities of application of a SAW in gas sensors. Interaction of external physical quantity on propagation medium, including the surface, can affect SAW propagation. In gas sensors disturbance of SAW propagation is results from change of the mechanical as well as electrical properties of a thin active sensor layer placed on a piezoelectric surface. The experimental results also have been presented.

The paper presents the structure of measurement stands for spectral measurement of sensor layers sensitive to the presence of ammonia vapours in the atmosphere surrounding them. Also the structure of a waveguide sensor model for detection of ammonia vapours has been presented, together with measurement results involving such a sensor.

The paper presents the results of investigation studies on the difference interferometer produced with the application of ion exchange technology K+ - Na+ and Ag+ - Na+ in the glass BK7. The investigation involved the applicability of such interferometers to determine the refractive index of the covers, which at the present stage of experiments are in the form of liquids.

The work presents the potentials for the application of the mode interference of the same polarization states (TE0-TEl) to monitor the changes of refractive index. The planar waveguides were produced using the ion exchange technique Na+-K+ in the glass BK-7.

This paper presents recent developments in investigations of glass intregrated optical circuit. Components are realised by the waveguide technologies: single ion exchange, creating of buried strip waveguides, double ion exchange, and doped glass strip waveguides. Moreover, double refraction of glass planar waveguides, equipment and elements on glass planar waveguides and multimode interference structures in the technology of elements of integrated optics and plasmon interaction are illustrated.
