The article describes the process of decommunization of urbanonyms in one of the Polish voivodeship capitals, Zielona Góra. It presents both the changes in naming we are witnessing currently and past ones. During the first removal of communist patrons we still had to deal with the period of the Polish People’s Republic after Stalin’s death and Władysław Gomułka’s coming to power. However, the changes introduced at that time were quite limited and concerned a small number of people who were no longer in power – Stalin and Marshal Rola-Żymierski. The proper decommunization was related to the political transformation after 1989. The previous urbanonyms, based mainly on anthroponyms, were replaced with names referring to people and events that could not be commemorated before and were to be erased from history (e.g. ul. Hanki Sawickiej changed to ul. gen. Okulickiego). In addition, the changes were motivated by the need nto commemorate local activists and heroes, and to highlight the history and topography of the city. The last decommunization was enforced by the enactment of the Act on the Prohibition of Propagation of Communism or Other Totalitarian Regimes and ended quite recently (the last street name change was voted on on March 27, 2018). Four streets in Zielona Góra have been renamed, including two referring to military organizations associated with the communist movement (ul. Armii Ludowej→ ul. Władysława Jagiełły and ul. II Armii → ul. Żołnierzy 2 Armii), and two based on dates (ul. Przylep-22 Lipca → ul. Przylep-Solidarności and ul. Przylep-9 Maja → ul. Przylep-8 Maja). Therefore, in the case of both decommunizations, ideological considerations prevailed, and to a lesser degree so did economic or cultural ones.

Artykuł traktuje o względach etycznych towarzyszących przemianowaniom urbanonimów wkontekście dekomunizacji. Skupiono się w nim na kilku kwestiach, dotyczących zwłaszcza uzasadniania zmian nazw ulic i placów, a także traktowania onimów jako nośników wartości, mogących służyć władzy i jej propagowaniu. Zwrócono ponadto uwagę na udział lokalnej społeczności w usuwaniu niepożądanych symboli komunistycznych. Ustalono, że naruszenie norm etycznych dotyczy: nieuwzględniania opinii środowisk lokalnych, zwłaszcza mieszkańców danej ulicy, w kwestii zmiany nazwy oraz wykorzystywania przez władzę swojej uprzywilejowanej w tym względzie pozycji, narzucania przez nią określonego światopoglądu i systemu wartości, a także posługiwania się nieprawdziwymi argumentami.

This article deals with ethical considerations accompanying the reorganization of urbanonyms in the context of de-communization. It is focused on several issues, in particular concerning the justification of changes in the names of streets and squares, as well as the treatment of onyms as carriers of values that could serve the authority and its propagation. Attention was also paid to the participation of the local community in removing unwanted communist symbols. Based on the observations made, it was established that the violation of ethical norms concerns: disregarding the opinions of local communities, especially residents of a given street, regarding the change of name and the use of its privileged position by the authority, the imposition of a particular worldview and value system, and the use of untrue arguments.

Teodor Tomasz Jeż was a very active person, realizing himself within many areas: literary, social, political. This writer and journalist was extremely popular at the time he lived and worked. Therefore, the author of this article tried to consider the role of the press in Jeż’s existence and his output. The connections of Jeż with the press may be typified variously. Firstly, one should note his readership. Newspapers were the main source of information. Secondly, thanks to a collaboration with the “Polish Democrat” [„Demokrata Polski”], he transformed himself from an ordinary reader into a kind of a journalist. He wrote articles devoted to miscellaneous topics and published them in numerous magazines, appearing both in the motherland or abroad. Moreover, the press gave him the opportunity to express his own political and social beliefs. Finally, it is worth mentioning that he made his literary debut in the “Polish Democrat”. Subsequent pieces of writing were also printed within newspapers’ columns. Some of them were published in sections of some magazines, and afterwards in a book. There is another mundane issue – the press guarranteed Jeż an important part of his incomes.

Teodor Tomasz Jeż to osoba bardzo aktywna, realizująca się na wielu płaszczyznach: literackiej, społecznej, politycznej. To pisarz i publicysta niezwykle popularny w czasach, kiedy żył i tworzył. Interesujące wydało się więc autorce niniejszego artykułu zastanowienie nad rolą prasy w jego życiu i twórczości. Związki Jeża z prasą mają różnorodny charakter. Najpierw należy odnotować działalność czytelniczą. Gazety były dlań przede wszystkim źródłem informacji. Następnie, nawiązując współpracę z „Demokratą Polskim”, przeobraził się ze zwykłego czytelnika w swego rodzaju dziennikarza. Pisał artykuły na wiele tematów i publikował je w licznych czasopismach, ukazujących się zarówno w kraju, jak i za granicą. Prasa dała mu przede wszystkim możliwość wyrażania własnych przekonań polityczno-społecznych. Wreszcie należy wspomnieć o tym, że na łamach czasopisma nastąpił jego debiut literacki. Zresztą kolejne utwory również ukazywały się w gazetach. Część z nich najpierw była drukowana w odcinkach w różnorodnych czasopismach, a potem dopiero wydawano je drukiem w formie książkowej. I na koniec jeszcze jedna, przyziemna kwestia – prasa była dla niego ważnym źródłem dochodu.

This article focuses on methods of specifying mobile objects in the ecclesiastical inventories. The research material comes from the manuscript entitled: The revision of the treasury of the Poznań cathedral (Revisio Thesauri Ecelesiae Cathedralis Poznaniensis), which is located in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Poznań under the inventory number DK pap IV/003. This document was drawn up on 6th July 1719 and certifies revision of the treasury of the cathedral in Poznań. The person who was preparing this document had to face the difficulty of describing objects located in the treasury by means of appropriate language. The choice of objects was not a coincidence. Descriptions were used for identification of relevant specimen and had to be as precise and comprehensive so that it was possible to identify a relevant object.The specifications of mobile items stored in the treasury have the analytic form of different length that mainly depends on a number of objects with the same functions. The more such objects were stored, the more elaborated description had to be attached that would include more differentiating factors. The Polish name of the object was an obligatory part of these syntactic and semantic language structures. The description also specifies: a kind of material the item was made of, its appearance, size, purpose for which it was used, a number of subsequent items of the same kind as well as the data concerning founders and owners of those objects.

Lusatia is a phenomenon in the history of Europe. For many centuries its inhabitants bravely struggled against the German element, preserving their identity. Such conduct has earned them our admiration. Does this admiration find reflection in the Polish language, for instance in the proper names used today? This article makes an attempt at answering this question. Special attention has been paid to the onyms including the words Łużyce/Lusatia, łużycki/Lusatian, Łużyczanin/Łużyczanka/male or female inhabitant of Lusatia, excerpted from the Internet with the use of Google browser. Their analysis shows which factors also played an important role in the formation of such names, i.e., sympathy and interest in the inhabitants of Lusatia – the people who have been cultivating their culture, language and customs for many years and who, because of their conduct, are worthy of our reflection.
