The modern linguo-didactics, which concentrates on the theory and practice of teaching Polish as the first (native) language, needs to consider numerous issues connected with the constantly evolving state of linguistic education at the dawn of the 21st century. The articles presents an overview of the most vital changes in the following contexts: the external general context (e.g. postmodernity, globalization, media diversity, informatization, technopoly); the subject-matter general context (e.g. expansion of the spoken and colloquial language, the dominance of the culture of image over the culture of word); the internal general context (including the curriculum and organizational reform of the Polish school); the internal subject-matter context (new ideas for the Polish language didactics), which have a significant impact on the in-class linguistic education and the linguo-didactics as such. The following sections present the basic dilemmas faced by linguo-didactics: how to reconcile the person-oriented perspective on linguistic education with its object; to what extent should the traditional language didactics be adapted to the new tasks set before the school subject entitled ‘Polish language' or whether an entirely new theory of teaching should be devised; is designing the so-called codes of good practice enough to secure effective linguistic education or should didactic theories also be developed; and, finally, is it possible to integrate the linguistic education with literary education in a way that would prove functional and at the same time would safeguard the linguistic elements of the curriculum. Linguo-didactics also has to deal with the problem of the far-reaching commercialization of the publishing market and hence the low didactic quality of the large part of course books and auxiliary teaching materials.
