Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify waste in the selected health care facility, the types and sources of events that trigger it, and to indicate possibilities to shorten time in which patients wait for help. Material and Methods: The case study was an Emergency Department located in the Province of Silesia. The Issue is many hour queues at the Emergency Departments. Results: Time to receive medical treatment is too long. Not only are high-risk patients being taken care of, but also patients who did not manage to visit their family doctor (General Practitioner - GP). Conclusions: The authoresses formulated a thesis that there are possibilities to shorten the waiting time for medical services at the Emergency Department.

W ostatnim czasie można zauważyć pojawiającą się presję na potrzebę poprawy jakości i bezpieczeństwa pacjentów w podmiotach leczniczych, także na konieczność poprawy efektywności funkcjonowania tych jednostek. W literaturze przedmiotu i praktyce zarządzania istnieje wiele modeli systemów pomiaru wyników organizacyjnych. Konieczna jest identyfikacja obecnie stosowanych systemów miar wyników w podmiotach leczniczych i taka ich modyfikacja/przeprojektowanie, by spełniały oczekiwania obiektywizacji oceny dokonań podmiotów leczniczych. Celem opracowania jest rozpoznanie zestawu stosowanych miar pozwalających na ustalenie stopnia pomiaru dokonań w wybranych do badań podmiotach leczniczych. Na potrzeby badań przyjęto następującą hipotezę: stosowane systemy miar wyników organizacyjnych w badanych podmiotach leczniczych nie sprzyjają efektywnej działalności tychże placówek.

In recent times, we can notice the need to improve service quality and patient safety in health care organizations, the need to improve the efficiency of the operations in these units. There are many models of performance measurement systems in management professional literature and business practice. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the current shape of performance measurement system in these organizations and to modify or redesign it to meet modern manager’s expectations in field of healthcare management. The aim of this paper is to recognize and assess the types of measures, which are used to measure achievements in the selected researched health care organizations. There was defined the following hypothesis in the research: in the surveyed healthcare organizations the applied performance measurement systems do not lead to the efficient functioning of these organizations.

Purpose: the aim of the paper is identification and presentation of determinants of supervisory board’s effectiveness in modern organization. Design/methodology/approach: own survey studies and expert opinion interviews conducted by the author. Findings: key necessary competences of supervisory board members in energy sector were identified, results of survey studies were confirmed by expert interviews. Research limitations/implications: formal legal and corporate limitations of access and use of internal information affect the scope of gathered materials. Practical implications: conducted study allows one to conclude that supervisory boards in current shape often do not guard long-term success of the company and are ill-equipped for the task at hand. Originality/value paper identifies factors which negatively influence and limit effectiveness of supervisory board, paper highlights and specifies key competences of individual board members.

Purpose: The purpose of the research is to form an integrated evaluation of the management control in a local government unit and demonstration of the benefits of successful and effective management of the unit by implementation of the designed method of evaluation. This paper attempts to design an integrated evaluation of management control in a local government unit and demonstrate the benefits of the successful and effective management of the unit by implementation of the designed method of evaluation. Methodology: The results presented in the paper are a result of research on the improvement of management control in local government units. The methods implemented in the study included: data analysis, a case study and a questionnaire, as well as the results of previous research and management control reports. Findings: The presented process of integrated assessment of management control will contribute to performing an analysis of the whole organisation and its subordinate units. Moreover, the role of the processes and organisational procedures, which contribute to the adjustment to change management in an organisation, have an impact on improving the efficiency of management control. The advantages of applying the model of integrated assessment of management control include, among others, increasing the awareness and responsibility of the managers and employees for the functioning of management control, minimisation of the time and costs of gathering data and standard method of the management control assessment in local government units. Practical implications: The paper concludes that applying the model of integrated assessment of management control enables one to assess the management control of local government units, as well as their subordinate units, in all areas of management.
