Haematopinus eurysternus Nitzsch is described for the first time as occurring in a heifer from Śrem region (Poznań). When compared with the individuals reported by other authors, it exhibits a certain variability; the author questions the assumption of Ferris that in louse the increase in the body dimensions is related to its staying in warm climate.

Segregacja odpadów u źródła to niezwykle skomplikowany i wieloaspektowy proces. Jego jakość i zasięg są uzależnione od warunków społecznych, w których wprowadza się tego typu rozwiązania, ale także od prawidłowej diagnozy procesów społecznych mających wpływ na postawy w tym zakresie.

The degree of infestation is only to some extent indicative of host preference. Infestation percent and the mean number of ectoparasites on a host depend on a large number of factors including, as Mohr (1961) assumes, the dimentions of the host. Bearing on observations upon ticks and chiggers Mohr tends to generalize and assumes the difference in infestation by lice also depend on host surface. The question of a possible correlation between the host size and lousiness has not yet been properly investigated. The author tries to find a confirmation of the discussed opinion in the results of other investigations. Contributions towards the problem of differences in lice number during the postnatal development of the host have been fragmentary only. As we know, some differences in infestation exist between young and adult hosts, but this phenomenon can be explained without taking into account the size of the host surface. The attempt to prove the discussed opinion in an indirect way, i.e. by comparison of infestations in two host species, should be based on figures concerning the same louse species on two hosts much resembling each other from the biological point of view and differing, if possible, in size only. Umfortunately, there are but few data like that in world litterature concerning lice. The present author compares the infestation by lice of 4 groups of hosts: Apodemus agrarius – Micromys minutus, Arvicola terrestris - Microtus ratticeps; Rattus norvegicus - R. rattus, Apodemus flavicollis - Clethrionomys glareolus, but is not able in this indirect way either to find any support of the discussed problem. In the present state of knowledge facts concerning possible correlation between host size and the amount of specimens of some ticks and chiggers (and possibly fleas, too), based on the biology of the respective arthropods, are not sufficient as far as ectoparasites in general, and lice in particular, are concerned.

The experiments with the use of unspecific hosts gave positive results; a day after the removal from cow, the lice were found to take the blood of man, mouse, guinea pig, rat and cat and survive longer than starving ones (table 1). The highest survival rate was exhibited by lice fed on human blood (table 2). The bites of H. eurysternus were mostly painless, the sensation of pricking appearing in the next days of feeding.

Three species were found to occur in domestic animals: Damalinia bovis L. in cattle, D. ovis Schrank in sheep and D. equi Denny in horse.
