Young poets at the beginning of the 21st century are often critical of their Leader and the physical and spiritual state of the country. The state of the language, a central part of the national heritage, features widely, sometimes with pathos at others with mordant humour, in this respect similarly to references to the leadership. Also important are official distortions of history, false media reporting and regrets at the present state of both the city and the country as a whole. As most of their books come out in small editions, they are probably considered harmless by the authorities, unlike the regular street demonstrations. Moreover, they provide something of a safety valve to release the widespread dismay felt by many of the nationally conscious intelligentsia.

This article reviews some of the recent texts of young Belarusian prose writers about leadership, the country itself, squalor and alcohol abuse. The attitudes to the Leader in this highly varied selction of stories are at best humorous and more often disrespectful, whilst the picture of Belarus given is of a backward, sometimes squalid country with serious social problems, like violence and excessive drinkin

Beginning with attempts to deny or repress the very idea of Belarusian history, this article is devoted the use of historical themes by three generations of Belarusian writers, with the youngest first and ending with three from the middle generation who, as a rule, do not show the influence of their elders on themselves, nor do they seem greatly to influence the younger writers. All ages, however, are engaged in the same struggle to counter the anti-historical ideas propagated by the leadership of their country, and the younger writers bring a sometimes unusual, indeed iconoclastic, approach to this important task.

Belarusian literature is currently written under difficult circumstances, which, however, neither stimulates nor restricts its development. In fact it flourishes both in metro¬politan and provincial Belarus as well as abroad. The much repressed language, after a chequered history, survives mainly in literature and in the use by mainly young nationally conscious Belarusians for whom it may act as a socio-political statement. The history of Belarus as the main successor state of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is inalienable, though disputed and minimized by some of the country’s leaders whose historical consciousness begins with World War II or even later. Most writers who left the country in voluntary or involuntary exile have gained new created energy, though the Belarusian Free Theatre would gladly return, were circumstances different. Whatever its difficulties, Belarusian culture re-mains strong.

The English language, for various reasons, is very attractive to many young Belarusian poets, who use it for adornment, humour, rhyme or even in acrostic verses. Occasional successes are greatly outnumbered by failures, due to errors in English grammar (something that is not confined to Belarusian poets) and, particularly, misunderstandings about the differences between English and Belarusian phonology. The hidden difficulties of the English language are frequently revealed in macaronic verse, at least to English readers.

This article reviews the prose and drama of Voĺha Hapiejeva up to 2018. The main themes of her work are: feminism, gender and sexual relations in a patriarchal society, and also various aspects of contemporary life, A Candidate of Science, she brings into her works, humorously, a variety of linguistic and grammatical forms. Her work is notable for its strong use of imagery, lively dialogues and many, especially in the plays, much absurdity. Without doubt Hapiejeva is not only one of boldest and most original of the promising Belarusian poets of our day, but also a very talented prose writer and dramatist.
