The tourism accommodation establishment is the main component and a basic measure of tourism industry. It is also an important determinant of tourism development in areas, regions, and resorts. In recent years, hostels have been intensively developing and gaining popularity as the newest type of accommodation. Hostels are commonly found in major centres of tourism in Western Europe, as well as in Australia, the United States or Canada. They are also growing in number and arousing more and more interest in Central European countries, particularly in Poland. However, there are very few scientific articles describing this type of accommodation establishment. The aim of the article is to present the role of hostels in the accommodation services market, with a particular emphasis on the city of Wrocław. The intention of the authors was to identify and describe major trends in the European hostel market and to use these data as a backdrop to discuss hostels in Poland, especially in Wrocław. The results show that hostels in Wrocław are highly diverse in terms of size, services provided, and quality. Global trends are quite visible but at this moment not all of them can be observed in the Polish market.

The paper presents the results of a qualitative and quantitative research concerning selected aspects of tourist attractiveness of five various tourist attractions, as well as the scale of their commercialization and adaptation to modern tourist service. The research was carried out as a questionnaire for tourism professionals. The results prove vast disproportions among the selected attractions with reference to the adaptation level for realizing the tourist functions. The disproportions involved the tourist attractiveness, tourist management, scale of commercialization, and the techniques and tools applied in advertising aimed at selected tourist market segments.

The survey conducted in Venice (Italy) shows that Poland does not have a strong tourism brand, and the knowledge of foreigners about Poland is very poor and stereotypical. The authors attempted to identify the key issues that influenced the Polish tourism image in the context of the needs connected with the commercialization of Poland’s tourism potential.
