A purpose of the article is to provide characteristics of comparisons appearing in Juliusz Słowacki’s poems exemplified by the constructions where comparans refers to the world of animals. Lexical material has been excerpted from eleven works written by J. Słowacki in the pre-mystic period. They include the following poems: Arab, Beniowski (songs I–V), Jan Bielecki, Lambro, Mnich, Ojciec zadżumionych, Podróż do Ziemi Świętej z Neapolu, Poema Piasta Dantyszka,Wacław, W Szwajcarii and Żmija. Non-gradation comparative structures possessing standard comparison indicators have been analyzed. The article mainly focused on: 1) discussing a formal shape of studied constructions, 2) semantic classification of comparans contained in comparisons referring us to the animal kingdom, 3) emphasizing multitude of “animal” lexis connotations used by the poet, 4) discussing basic subject areas the excerpted comparisons belong to with regard to the meaning of a descriptive chunk, and 5) the most important functions of these clues. It has been established that the analyzed comparative constructions have an explicitly anthropocentric character since they, most of all, serve a suggestive illustration of a human’s psycho-physical condition.

The article is devoted to the linguistic image of an angel – a good spirit – depicted in the lyrics of contemporary secular Polish songs. The analyzed research material included 70 lyrics of songs released in the period from 1985 to 2012. The songs represent different music styles: from pop and folk music to blues and sung poetry to hip-hop, various genres of rock and so-called gothic metal. The analysis of the linguistic image of those supernatural beings involved the following categories: 1) appearance, 2) location, 3) features, 4) functions, 5) emotions and behavior.Special attention was paid to the figure of a guardian angel and its unusual variant – a winged protector who no longer fulfill their duties, as well as ‘humanized’ angels, resembling humans in their physical and behavioral characteristics. It was stated that the figure of an angel in the analyzed lyrics is characterized by exten sive functionality. The linguistic portrait of that spiritual being is an interesting combination of concepts present in the collective consciousness (to some extent originating in the Bible and angelic iconography) and individual ideas developed by the songwriters.

A subject of the article is the presentation of the most important linguistic methods applied by J. Słowacki in order to evoke a softened vision of death in three dramas from the pre-mystic period: Kordian, Balladyna and Beatryks Cenci. The semantic-lexical analysis that the excerpted linguistic material had been subject to, comprised only real meaning contexts regarding human death. It has been found out that the tamed image of mors presented in the discussed works has been achieved due to a rich range of euphemisms naming individual Thanatos designates. What particularly deserves attention, however, is the fact that the process of decreasing Thanatos severity is pursued in two manners in J. Słowacki’s works: he either restricts himself to weakening negative emotions evoked by talking about death expressis verbis or omitting proper names is accompanied by the introduction of specified conceptualizations: metaphoric or metonymic. Nevertheless, the vision of human ultimate destiny they convey is not characterized by sophisticated originality because among “positive” depictions there prevail references to culturally elaborated traditions of taming Thanatos, even though it happens that based on them J. Słowacki creates extremely interesting poetic pictures. It should be emphasized though that “the theater of death” presented by J. Słowacki in the discussed works is of an ambivalent nature since “positive” uncovering of mortal experience is accompanied by its negative depictions. They have been described in the article: Juliusza Słowackiego “theatrum mortis” – wizja negatywna (na przykładzie “Kordiana”, “Balladyny” i “Beatryks Cenci”).

The poetic novel Maria [Mary] by Antoni Malczewski published in 1825 is an outstanding work which, according to some researchers, could initialize Polish Romantic literature on equal terms with two volumes of Poezje [Poems] by Adam Mickiewicz. An unquestionable value of Mary is its author’s mature artistic workshop revealed, among others, in a skillful use of linguistic and stylistic devices. The subject of this article is a description of non-graded comparative constructions occurring in A. Malczewski’s poem that are based on cultural associations. A formal side of these clues has been analyzed. The first part of the text depicts a degree of comparisons’ density in the work’s linguistic tissue, their distribution in the narration and dialogues and monologues as well as the dependence between linear extension of comparisons and the volume of the text occupied by them. Whereas the second part of the article is focused on the discussion of the structure of comparative constructions and their grammar characteristics.

Introduction Falls are a serious social problem. The risk of falling is higher for women compared to the male population, which may be resulting from differences in anatomy of the pelvis. Even though there are papers describing pelvis reaction to perturbation differentiating males and females, the perturbation is usually applied in standing position. The study’s aim was to compare selected values describing the pelvis motion while gait perturbation and normal walking, having regard to sex differences. Material and methods The study group included 43 young healthy adults (27 women and 16 men) aged 23±4 years. Motek Grail system was used to record the position of reflective markers placed on subjects’ body. Gait perturbation (trip) was induced by decelerating one of the belts of the treadmill integrated with the system. Three-dimensional kinematic parameters for the left leg stance phase, when the perturbation occurred, and the next stance phase of the contralateral leg was analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted in STATISTICA software using a two-way analysis of variance and Pearson correlation. Results Statistically significant differences between gait and perturbation were found for each of the analyzed planes. It was also observed that gender influenced the results. Females had greater maximum pelvic tilt and greater rotation to the right compared to men, both for gait and perturbation. Conclusions Based on the obtained results it can be suggested that differences in the anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvis between male and female may be the reason of higher risk of falling while walking in women compared to the men.

Introduction Tissues located on the plantar side of the foot determine its static and dynamic properties and their tightness might be associated with limiting the range of motion in functional tasks. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of loosening tissues located on the plantar side of the foot on its longitudinal arching and on the range of the trunk forward bend. Material and methods The study was conducted on 30 healthy volunteers, aged 18-25. They were divided into two groups and assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 15) and a control group (CG, n = 15). Participants in both groups underwent three series of measurements including the measurement of the height of the navicular bone, the fingers-to-floor test and the podoscopic examination (Clarke’s angle). In between these measurements subjects from the EG performed a foam-rolling sequence. The subjects from the CG did not perform any intervention. Acute and chronic effect (2 weeks) of foam rolling was examined. Results Changes in the Thomayer’s test results, Clarke’s angle values and the height of navicular bone values caused by the intervention did not show a statistically significant difference between the EG and CG (p>0.05). Conclusions Foam rolling of the plantar side of the foot does not seem to influence the shape of the foot and the trunk forward bend range of motion. Further research is required to investigate the effects of foam rolling.
