The emergence of tobacco on the European market resulted in the flourishing of crafts involved in the production of items related to its use. The properties of this exotic plant and the cultural superstructure of its consumption meant that smoking or taking snuff quickly became a lifestyle. Along with decreasing tobacco prices, caused by the development of the commercial network and the establishment of local cultivation, it goes to a wider group of recipients. Considered a medicinal plant, tobacco was used for various ailments and disorders. The widespread use of this exotic plant meant that tobacco consumption related items gained the rank of personal effects, sometimes associated with specific users. As a result of archaeological excavations carried out in the southern crypt in the church of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary in Piaseczno (Pomeranian Voivodeship) two fragments of clay pipe bowls were found. Analysis of the objects showed that one of the bowls was part of a porcelain compound pipe, while the other was the bowl of a homogeneous pipeclay pipe, originating from a Dutch workshop operating in the third quarter of the 18th century. The presence of pipes in grave equipment may indicate special treatment of objects used for tobacco smoking. Ethnographic sources indicate that, like other stimulants, tobacco, pipes and snuffboxes were offered to deceased enthusiasts of smoking or using snuff in the form of grave equipment of the last journey. An example of a homogeneous pipe bowl from Piaseczno indicates that wellpreserved ceramic pipes allowing their identification can be used for relative dating of burial or room in which it was deposited.

Textiles have always played an important role in human life. They accompany us from birth till death and even later, in our place of eternal rest. Treated often marginally, they have also been a significant element of modern burghers’ houses equipment, securing privacy, providing warmth, isolating from noise or interfering looks. Used in bedrooms, kitchens, pantries or living rooms, they have made our mundane chores easier, but also have been the subject of admiration and envy of the visitors, confirming the owners’ wealth. The article’s purpose is to demonstrate brief review of modern silk decorative textiles, obtained during archaeological explorations in Elbląg, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland. Textiles from urban sites in Poland preserve very rarely, and are regarded as exceptional finds, with unique historical value. They confirm presently the existence of plentitude of various textiles, which are presented in inventories of properties and in post-medieval burghers’ last wills.

Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Polska. Tkaniny z badań miejskich w Polsce zachowują się niezwykle rzadko, stanowią nieliczną grupę zabytków o znacznych walorach poznawczych. Potwierdzają obfitość tkanin jaka przedstawiana jest w spisach inwentarzy rzeczy ruchomych i w nowożytnych testamentach mieszczańskich.

Polychrome on the vaults or walls of grave crypts are a rare category of finds and they are often accompanied by problems for specialist analyses or restoration. A composition of five images of religious and symbolic character was registered on a completely plastered barrel vault with lunettes in a crypt situated under the chapel of The Passion in postcistercian church of The Holy Trinity in Byszewo. Archaeological exploration of the crypt resulted in the excavation of 92 coffins of lay representatives – both adults and children. Burial and grave goods analyses confirmed that the crypt could have been erected in the middle of 18th century and used until the beginning of 19th century. Physicochemical tests and conservation analysis of the painting suggest that walls and the vault completing works could be continued in the time of intense use of the room as a burial place, and the present polychrome is probably the fourth layer of painting. The elements preserved until the present day might have been created between the 18th and 19th century.

Plants have always played an important role in funeral customs. To understand their true meaning, close cooperation between the archaeologist and the archaeobotanist is needed, not only during the final interpretation, but from the very beginning, at the stage of collecting materials. In the article, plants’ identification, using both pollen and macroremainsanalysis, was described, based on one of the children’s burial from the Holy Trinity Church in Byszewo (18th/19th centuries). The filling of the coffin pillow consisted of numerous hop (Humulus lupulus) macroremains, the representation of which was very low in pollen sample. This is due to the fact that only female specimens of hop were inserted into the coffin. To determine the reason for using hops in funeral practices in Byszewo, ethnobotanical data was used. The following research indicates the need for the cooperation between two methods of plant identification. It will allow misinterpretations of botanical findings to be avoided
