In a brief introduction a general description of thermoelectricity, thermoelectric materials and their characteristics, and early investigation are given. Then the skutterudite structure is discussed with the emphasis on the atomic displacement parameters (ADP). The presented properties concern magnetism, superconductivity as well as the behavior indicating the presence of strongly correlated electronic states in some skutterudites. Particular attention is devoted to the heavy fermion and non--Fermi liquid states, and intermediate valence. Finally, some remarks about band structure and perspective of improving the thermoelectric properties of the filled skutterudites are considered.

In present review the puzzling physical properties of uranium and its compounds are discussed. The magnetic properties of uranium intermetallics are presented with particular emphasis on the uranium contribution to the magnetism and its experimental determination. Then the heavy fermion properties of UCu4+xAL8-x and its derivatives are described together with the appearance conditions of the non-Fermi-Liquid behaviour. All the results concern ThMn12-type intermetallics as a frame-work. The data obtained for respective scandium compounds is used as the reference for discussion.

The negative magnetization for ternary and pseudoternary compounds with the tetragonal ThMn12 and rhombohedral Th2Zn17 type structure is presented considering various magnetic ordering types. This phenomenon has been observed in compounds of rare earth and uranium. Comparing pecularities of the temperature dependence of the magnetization/magnetic susceptibility we try to find a common reason for this behaviour. The most attractive seems to be the difference in the anisotropy magnitude and direction of the individual magnetic sublattices as well as the crystallographic imperfections.

The structure and magnetic properties of the tetragonal ThMn12 - type RMn12-xTx alloys (R=Nd, Sm; T=Co, Ni) have been studied in broad magnetic field ranges (up to 35 T). High pulsed magnetic field is applied at T = 4.2 K with the pulse duration of 10 ms. The NdMn12-xNix system has been investigated additionally in the temperature range extended up to about 750 K. The ternaries exist in, approximately, the 4 => x => 8 composition range. The alloys with x ~4 are frequently paramagnetic in a broad temperature range, whereas for other compositions complicated magnetic properties are observed. The results are discussed in relation to the free-ion values of the Nd and Sm ions .
