The article is an attempt to answer the question how one may talk about animals in historical perspective. First, the author reviews the historical research on animals conducted in the Polish humanities, which, as she notices, follows mostly the same model of including animals in the historical order. Then, the term “history of animals” is discussed to be followed by two other, diametrically opposite research proposals by Erica Fudge and Eric Baratay. The author reveals the similarity between Baratay’s proposal and reflection included in animal studies and emphasizes that Fudge’s proposal may be an alternative not only for the French researcher’s proposal, but for the entire stream of research on animals.
