Along with the definite and indefinite articles, the zero article plays a key role in the synergistic relationship of reference made by these articles. This paper focuses on the non-relational features possessed by the zero article as opposed to the other two, and to which extent it is possible in Spanish to modulate by means of this article the way a nominal signifier refers to the signified. This would corroborate the need to take a greater account of the zero article in the description of the article system in Spanish, as an integral part of it in complementary distribution with the other two.

Junto a los artículos determinado e indeterminado, el llamado artículo cero juega un papel fundamental en la relación sinérgica de referencia y actualización discursiva existente entre los tres. El presente trabajo se concentra en las características no relacionales que posee este artículo en contraposición a los otros dos, y en qué medida se puede contar en espanol con su capacidad de modular el cómo se relaciona un significante nominal con su significado. Esto conduciría a corroborar la necesidad de tomar más en cuenta el artículo cero en la descripción del sistema del artículo en espanol, como parte integrante de él, al encontrarse en distribución complementaria con los otros dos.
