Collecting data on earth surface for commercial purposes begun in 1972, when first satellite sensor called ETRS started its work with 80 m ground pixel size. After almost thirty years from that moment we have ability of monitoring our planet for cartographic purposes with ground resolution below 1m. Rapid technical improvements in electronics, optics and telecommunication allow us to plan in nearest future systems, which will provide information close to aerial photographs, and maybe even competitive to digital aerial photography. In front of us a new trend of satellite photogrammetry is born. Close future possibility of gaining access to images made from space with 20-40 cm ground resolution is a great chance and challenge for photogrammetrists, cartographers, and surveyors. This paper presents the newest developments in the area of satellite systems called VHR (Very High Resolution). It covers the following problems: m Present state and future of military VHR systems for defense purposes; m USA strategy for VRS development; m Commercial VHR systems; m Closest perspectives. m Usage of VHR sattelite images in Poland.
