Content available remote Juicer - a data mining approach to information extraction from the WWW

EN
We present a novel approach to automatic text mining on the World Wide Web. Considering the fact that the enormously dynamic growth of the WWW results in a need for new, more powerful information extraction tools we designed and implemented a system, which adapts techniques originally introduced in the field of data mining. We believe that similar systems, which usually base on machine learning or natural language processing methods, can prove to be ineffective when dealing with the very large numbers of hypertext documents of different structure and subject. Moreover, such systems tend to treat HTML documents as plain texts not taking into account the additional information contained in their markup tags.

In this paper, we present the findings of a qualitative analysis of 15,750 comments left by 2,041 participants in a Reconcile web credibility evaluation study. While assessing the credibility of the presented pages, respondents of the Reconcile studies were also asked to justify their ratings in writing. This work attempts to give an insight into the factors that affected the credibility assessment. To the best of our knowledge, the presented study is the most-recent large-scale study of its kind carried out since 2003, when the Fogg et al. śHow do users evaluate the credibility of Web sites? A study with over 2,500 participants’ paper was published. The performed analysis shows that the findings made a decade ago are still mostly valid today despite the passage of time and the advancement of Internet technologies. However we report a weaker impact of webpage appearance. A much bigger dataset (as compared to Fogg’s studies) allowed respondents to reveal additional features, which influenced the credibility evaluations.

EN
Cyberspace is a domain of information collecting, storing and processing in a digital form. It operates based on digital signal transmission but sometimes, which is often forgotten, based on electromagnetic radiation. The literature analyses indicate that cyberspace is intangible in its essence but functions owing to ICT infrastructure that generates and sends the signals. A cyberspace user, i.e., a human, takes action based on measurable and geographically located infrastructure which exists in the material world but penetrates the “aterritorial” cyberspace. This paper aims to present various perspectives on the attempted answer to the question of whether technical borders of cyberspace exist.

Koncepcja sieci semantycznej zakłada opracowanie mechanizmów publikacji informacji umożliwiających agentom programowym korzystanie z danych opublikowanych w Internecie, podobnie jak człowiek korzysta z dzisiejszej sieci WWW. Nadal jednak człowiek pozostaje głównym użytkownikiem sieci. Powoduje to konieczność współistnienia w sieci semantycznej dwóch zasadniczo różnych sposobów publikacji. Artykuł przedstawia stosowane aktualnie sposoby w celu uniknięcia komplikacji.

The Semantic Web version assumes that new ways of publicizing information will be prepared which allow software agents to use data available in the Web just like people use current WWW. Howeover the Web still will be used mainly by pepole. Thus it is necessary for two completely different ways of publicizing information to coexist together. The article presents methods used today to avoid this complexity.

W artykule omówiono koncepcję sieci semantycznej, jako następcy WWW. Przedstawiono genezę powstania sieci semantycznej. Dokonano analizy języków do prezentacji informacji w Internecie. Omówiono środowiska sieci semantycznej oraz przedstawiono sposoby integracji dwóch różnych ontologii, opisujących ten sam wycinek rzeczywistości przez różnych projektantów. Opracowano strategię opisu rzeczywistości za pomocą sieci semantycznej.

In the paper the conception of the semantic web following the WWW and the genesis if its origin are discussed. Languages as a tool for Internet presentation are analysed and showed the environment of the semantic web. There are also presented the ways of integration of two different ontologies describing the same reality segment, which was created by two different designers. The strategy of the reality description was worked out by means of the semantic web.

As online presence plays an increasingly important role in corporate success, the high usability of a company’s website becomes one of its most valuable assets. The time required to reach the needed information, which plays a key role among the many factors that influence a website’s usability, depends to a significant degree on the site’s design. The perception of the visual aspects of design is in turn influenced by various so-called “visual means”. This term encompasses a range of methods, procedures or techniques of using elements of graphical design to achieve the desired effect, which should be applied according not only to the informational content of the site, but also to the designer’s overall vision, i.e. the graphical layout of the site. Therefore, it can be said that a usable website design is largely dependent on the site’s composition, understood as maintaining the appropriate relations between its form and content. One of methods for increasing the visibility of a given graphical element is highlighting its distinctness, difference from other elements. This method is called contrasting. This article presents the methodology and a discussion of the results of original research into the impact of contrasting chosen text elements on the home page of a website on the time needed by a user to reach the information "privileged" by such a procedure.
