Work migration is one of the contemporary phenomena that became the focus of numerous researches. Its political and economic outcomes in both the country of origin and the recipient country seem to be well dealt with in a vast number of treatises. The new migration wave, however, brought about a number of completely new specific phenomena. As a result of the last post accession wave of work migration from Poland, which began 1st May 2004, there appeared: pendulum migration strategy, transnational parenthood, euro-orphanage, and nanny syndrome. In the article, I analyze one of them, i.e. transnational parenthood. I will focus on the direction in which the roles of a mother, a father, a child and other members of a family experiencing pendulum migration change and the range of the modification. I am also interested in the migrants’ and their families’ social life and how their health is affected by the functioning in such families. I based my dissertation on immensely rich literature on the subject as well as my own research material gathered since 2010, which includes quality interviews with both migrants and their family members.

In the late 20th – early 21st centuries, sociologists more and more frequently are using the theory of capital, the development of which was greatly contributed by Pierre Bourdieu. In the article, there are substantiated the necessity and the possibility to use the theory of capital evaluating and analyzing situations in different spheres of social life, including employment, labour migration. In 2012, the sociologists of the Institute of Social Research, Daugavpils University, carried out a research project “Aggregate Capital, Its Structure and Relation to Labour Migration”, where the theory of total capital was widely used. The project was aimed to evaluate the volume and structure of the total capital of Latgale region’s inhabitants, taking into account state’s needs for its social and economical development and different needs of region’s inhabitants, in particular connected to the labour migration. Using results of different studies aiming to examine the competiveness of employed part of Latvians as well as the role of different types of capital, hypothesis has been highlighted – basis for growth of the human capital (at the same time for the growth of financial and social wellbeing of region’s inhabitants) is the cultural capital of family. Executing the study basic hypothesis has been acknowledged: in the modern environment of the “society of knowledge”, having a high proportion of the services sector, the basis for the growth of the human capital (that in fact has a direct effect on the economical capital) is the cultural capital of personality. For the major part of economically active inhabitants the cultural capital is not only a source of social and moral benefits, but also a source of financial income. Also additional hypothesis has been proved – higher predisposition for the labour migration is more typical for economically active region’s inhabitants with fairly high amounts of some indicators of the total capital, especially physical capital, but with comparatively lower amount of the cultural capital, which could transform into the human capital, and further into the economical capital in Latgale or Latvia.

Undesirable – French Attitudes Towards Polish Immigration in the Years 1930-1944 Polish historical literature referring to migrations to France is dominated by issues of emigrants’ everyday life and activities. The issue of politics and the legal approach of the French state towards migrants has been hitherto treated marginally. This article discusses the topic of Polish migrants adapting to their new situation and living in France through the perspective of decrees and circulars of the French state regulating the status of migrants. Sources from the French archives indicate that France tightened their laws concerning immigrants in 1930s, including allowing for the establishment of internment camps for “undesirable” foreigners.

Ostatnia trzecia część zawiera omówienie wyników badań własnych o jakościowym charakterze przeprowadzonych wśród emigrantów w roku 2010 i 2011. W podsumowaniu artykułu wskazuję na dalsze kierunki analizy omawianych zagadnień.

The article focuses on the analysis of psychosocial factors influencing migrant workers’ health. The analysis is divided into three parts. The first, theoretical, depicts modern work migration with the emphasis put on circular migration, and characteristic features of people who are its part. There is, as well, some theoretical background of my own research, which are three theories: theory of the social capital of migration (the most important), push and pull theories, and the theory of new economics of labour migration. The second part is devoted to a study of health from the sociopsychological perspective and the possibilities and restrictions of reasoning about the influence of social factors on susceptibility to various illnesses while on migration. There is also a list of discussed phenomena in this part. I concentrated mainly on the following factors: trauma of social change, social marginalization, malfunction in a family, stress, the feeling of rootlessness and the symptoms of social anomie. The last part includes the results of own qualitative research conducted among migrants in 2010 and 2011 in the summary I point at directions of further research on the discussed issues.
