Present article is an analysis of winged words Sredniaia temperatura po bol’nice with the indication to popular anecdotes that in many cases are a source for such expressions and warrants attention and consideration of lexicographers and translators.

This article is a survey of the most important communicative phenomena in the contemporary Polish political humour. It is also an attempt to describe political humour from a theoretical point of view and to compare it with political jokes from a period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). This article mainly describes amusing statements of contemporary politicians that were primarily used as the means of a political polemic, and secondarily after having been popularised by journalists (due to their comic content), achieved a status of “winged words” and appeared in various intertextual variants of the public and colloquial discourse.

The subject of the article is to present a rhetorical approach in linguistic analysis of functioning of culture idioms (winged words) in the contemporary public discourse. The chosen example of the winged words is the Milan Kundera’s novel title The Unbearable Lightness of Being which turned out to be often rephrased/paraphased and used idiom in Polish media (press titles) and commercials (slogans). The main directions of analysis was based on one of the fundamental rhetorical rules – the principle of appropriateness. The principle was recognized as a useful scientific tool in linguistic research because 1) it allows to deeply interpret intertextual games, 2) enables esthetic verification of idioms modifications in public discourse and, 3) lets to assess a communication act based on idioms as coherent or not in context of sender-recipient relations. Paraphases and rephrases of analyzed winged words showed that they include both rthetorical inventio and dispositio techniques but the inventio strategy is crucial here for appropriateness. The main conclusions of the presented research for the analyzed texts of public discourse are as following: 1) appropriate press tittle based on winged words is clear for recipient, and coherent with the article subject; 2) appropriate slogan based on winged words is adequate to target recipient, and understood not only as persuasive but also informational text; 3) intertextual games in both types of public discourse are focused on intriguing the recipient but keeping the principle of appropriateness has different axiological rank in each of them: in press discourse appropriateness is an autotelic value as a kind of cognitive value, in marketing discourse commercial utility is a priority so appropriateness becomes instrumental value there.

The paper contains deliberations on the entries in a two-volume dictionary "Skrzydlate słowa" edited by H. Markiewicz and A. Romanowski marked as Tuwim’s winged expressions. The purpose of the analysis is to determine, whether all the entries included in the lexicon meet the criteria for winged words and to recreate the mechanisms that led to the transformation of Tuwim’s quotations into winged words. The research has shown that only a limited number of entries included in the analysed dictionary constitutes Tuwim’s winged words, while the remaining examples are widely known quotations from his works that are not considered to be language units. However the data included in the dictionary edited by Markiewicz and Romanowski has made it possible to examine the processes of transformation from quotations into winged words. The processes were frequently accompanied by the exclusion of components that are superfluous from the perspective of communication and less frequently – by the modification of the prototypes’ meaning. Other secondary sources in relation to Tuwim’s texts have also contributed to the transformation of Tuwim’s quotations into winged words. Tuwim’s quotations that “have taken wings”, especially the ones that are most productive in modern Polish, are subject to further transformations.

The article describes three spheres of culture which can be used as sources of texts for linguistics classes, evoked by the nicknames mentioned in the title: Pudelek.pl (a gossip website) as a source of mass culture texts, Polityka (a widely-read opinion weekly) as an example of the political discourse, and finally Jeremi Przybora (a perfectionist lord of the Polish language) as an example of the highbrow culture texts. The article results from author’s own teaching experience. She introduces vocabulary of the public discourse, distinguishing between the “flagship” words, the winged words, and the words that changed their due to the influence of political correctness (i.e. words which were “turned inside out”). Particularly important here seem to be the winged words which, characterized by their condensed form, are able to built both cultural continuity and group identity. Therefore, amongst the selected texts are also those by/about the persons related to university.

The article deals with the problem of specificity of language adaptation of the Biblical words and expressions. Despite of the generality of the sacred text, on the basis of which in many European languages are born Biblicisms each language treats them according to the peculiarities of its own linguistic system. Hence the semantic and stylistic differences of Biblicisms, which have a common source. This process is demonstrated by authors with the example of the biblical expression the блудный сын (prodigal son).

В статье рассматривается проблема специфики языковой адаптации библейских слов и выражений. Несмотря на общность сакрального текста, на основе которого в европейских языках рождены многие библеизмы, каждый конкретный язык по-своему воспринимает их сообразно особенностям своей собственной языковой системой. Отсюда — семантические и стилистические различия библеизмов, имеющих общий источник. Этот процесс демонстрируется авторами на примере библейского выражения блудный сын.

W artykule omówiono problem specyfiki adaptacji językowej słów i wyrażeń pochodzenia biblijnego. Autorzy stwierdzają, iż każdy język europejski adaptuje biblizmy zgodnie z regułami własnego systemu, co z kolei implikuje określone różnice semantyczne i stylistyczne tych jednostek. Proces ten prześledzony jest na przykładzie wyrażenia biblijnego блудный сын ('syn marnotrwany').
