The paper presents a design of a wheelchair with an alternative method of propulsion. The innovative method is based on adding two propelling levers that are arm driven. This solution eliminates the necessity of direct hand-push rim contact while propelling the wheelchair.

Generally, wheelchair users cannot move easily within buildings since living areas in architectural structures are not suitable for them to maintain or to improve their physical capabilities. Because living area restrictions affect the physical performance of the users outside during the day, the reduced mobility causes several health problems. These problems become more intense by the time. Especially heart and lung related illnesses are common among the wheelchair users since the immobility decreases respiration capacity. The aim of this research is to design and prototype a wheelchair treadmill to help wheelchair users improve their upper extremity system. In this study, CAD was employed for the design of wheelchair treadmill. Then finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out for the parts of the wheelchair treadmill and the prototype was manufactured based on the results. The prototype was tested under the conditions the product was originally intended to function. In the experiments, the speeds of wheelchair and wheelchair treadmill were measured. The distances taken by users were also recorded, and the results were evaluated with respect to road surface conditions.

Wózków inwalidzkich łączących cechy użytkowe z funkcją pokonywania przeszkód i poruszania się po schodach jest na świecie tylko kilka ofert rynkowych a ich cena zbliżona jest do ceny luksusowego samochodu osobowego. Prac naukowych dotyczących zagadnień dynamiki wózków inwalidzkich jest bardzo mało. Niewspółmiernie mało, w stosunku do zapotrzebowania społecznego na tego typu pojazdy. Zdaniem autorów praca jest jedną z pierwszych tego typu prac na świecie pokazujących w sposób kompleksowy badania wózków inwalidzkich. Zaprezentowano proces projektowania z wykorzystaniem technik CAx, budowy prototypu oraz badań weryfikacyjnych i walidacyjnych na prototypie.

On the market there are only few offers of wheelchairs combining their motor function with the function of surmounting physical obstructions and ascending or descending stairs. Their prices are comparable to those of luxury cars. There are also few research papers concerning the dynamics of wheelchairs. Definitely too few considering the social demand for vehicles of this type. The authors of this paper are convinced that it is one of the first papers in the world dealing, in a comprehensive way, with wheelchairs. It presents the design process using CAx techniques together with the prototype construction and cerification/validation studies conducted on the prototype.

Elektryczny układ napędowy wózka inwalidzkiego składa się z procesorowego układu regulacji, w którym można wyróżnić blok zadajnika prędkości i przyspieszenia i blok regulatorów, z tranzystorowych przetworników napięć i z dwóch niezależnych silników zasilanych z akumulatorów. W artykule przedstawiono wymagania stawiane układowi regulacji wózka i przykład wykonania takiego układu oraz trzy warianty sterowania tranzystorowymi przetwornikami napięć. Przedstawiono wyniki badań wózka wyposażonego w różne układy zasilające.

In the wheelchair drive system, the drive circuit has been subdivided into several separate parts: speed and acceleration setting module, controller module, PWM transistor voltage converters and two independent battery-supplied motors. The paper presents basic demands of the control circuit, implementation example of this circuit and three different structures of PWM transistor converters. Wheelchair drive system investigation results for different drive structures have been presented in this paper.

In this paper, a new approach to shared control for wheelchair driving assistance to visually challenged people is presented. Our system estimates how much help the user needs to solve a situation in a reactive fashion and combines his/her commands with assistant to continuously produce an emergent motor behavior. Thus, the better the person drives, the more control he/she is awarded with. Attempts to drive in unsafe directions or far from a set goal also reduce user contribution to wheelchair motion. Efficiency changes are perceived by people as speetl reduction. Users may sample different headings and acknowledge that they are on their way when they gain back speed.The approach has been tested at Casa Agevole in Fondazione Santa Lucia (FSL) with blindfolded volunteers. All volunteers managed to finish a mildly complicaled trajectory with door crossing and major turns in collaborative mode.

It has ability not only to comfortable move on flat surfaces, but also can safely climb on stairs. Three-wheeled suspension may be used in transport goods and invalid people.

The subject of the article is the idea of construction, modeling and simulation studies of the new generation, mechatronical wheelchair. The wheelchair is going to be adapted for the drive on the various surface. The important feature of it is going to be the possibility of obstacle overcoming, such as doorstep of the maximal height of 200 mm. The construction model and simulation studies were carried out in the environment of MBS ADAMS package. The algorithm of controlling of doorstep entry was proposed and the analysis of parametrical sensitivity of the construction was done.

In this work, a study is made of the characteristics needed by emitters and detectors in order to build a sensor with the reflection of an infrared beam of light in external environments. The main problem to be solved is how to distinguish the reflection of the laser beam from radiation emitted by the sun ; the source from which most noise will come. Reducing the amount of noise captured can increase this signal noise relation. This is achieved by choosing the adequate wavelength and using filters ; or by increasing the power of the signal up to the limits permitted by international security regulations. After presenting the theory of the optimum working conditions, detection results obtained with various types of emitter and detectors are shown.
