The possibilities and plans of Lodz railway junction development have been presented in the paper. The present layout of railway network in province and the basic premises and targets of Lodz junction development and modernisation as regional and supraregional layout have been given.

The interesting scenery of Gtuchotazy is influenced by several elements. The town is located in a river valley, has a spa tradition and an extensive railway junction, which has, an exceptional in Poland,railway line serving municipal transport. From a passenger and cargo main railway station three lines stem: to Nowy Swi^tow, Jindfichov ve Slezsku, Mikulovice and the municipal line where two other stations in the town are located. Two almost parallel lines depart from the main station towards the south: one to Mikulovice and a municipal line. Both meander down the river valley among the town buildings, the municipal line below the other. This makes the town's landscape rich in railway buildings and constructions: railway crossing attendant's houses, viaducts, trussing bridge over the river and old steel guardrooms controlling international traffic in the past. The most interesting landscape is that of the spa district, where the railway crosses the central square. Railway buildings and constructions in Gluchotazy are characteristic elements of the area and have great aesthetic and cultural value. Progressive degradation of the rai I way causes material damage to the landscape of the town. Adequate town planning actions should be taken to stabilize it and preserve it.

Stacja kolejowa Wrocław Główny jest jedną z tych o największym dobowym ruchu pasażerskim w Polsce. Dane Urzędu Transportu Kolejowego podkreślają jej bardzo duże znaczenie w połączeniach krajowych. Jednak wciąż istnieje niewykorzystany potencjał w kolejowych przewozach międzynarodowych. W porównaniu do transgranicznych pociągów z Poznania, Krakowa i Katowic oferta przewozowa dla Wrocławia jest wyraźnie ograniczona. Dawniej istniały liczne połączenia dzienne i nocne łączące stolicę Dolnego Śląska z miastami krajów sąsiedzkich oraz kurortami czarnomorskimi. W dobie odrodzenia kolei, w tym rozwoju połączeń nocnych w Europie, konieczne jest zwrócenie uwagi na pozycję Wrocławia sprzyjającą włączeniu go do sieci połączeń międzynarodowych w Europie Zachodniej. Wrocław ma możliwości, aby stanowić istotny węzeł przesiadkowy między Europą Wschodnią i Zachodnią, a jego potencjał jest głównym przedmiotem badań przedstawionych w artykule. Celem artykułu jest nakreślenie możliwości rozwoju połączeń międzynarodowych przechodzących przez Wrocław w trzeciej dekadzie XXI wieku na podstawie analizy dawnych rozkładów jazdy, jak i prognoz rozwoju siatki połączeń między Polską i krajami Europy Zachodniej. Dawne rozkłady jazdy mogą pozwolić na odtworzenie tras połączeń istniejących na przełomie XX i XXI wieku. Natomiast modernizacja infrastruktury kolejowej powinna umożliwić utworzenie nowych połączeń na podstawie dawnych relacji i tras, lecz ze skróconym czasem jazdy i wyższym komfortem podróży. Inwestycje infrastrukturalne mogą pomóc w uruchomieniu takich połączeń z Wrocławia, co wzmocniłoby jego rolę jako kolejowego węzła w skali europejskiej.

The Wrocław Główny railway station is one of the stations with the highest daily passenger traffic in Poland. The data from the Office of Rail Transport emphasize its importance in domestic connections. However, there is still untapped potential in international rail connections. Compared to the cross-border trains from Poznań, Kraków and Katowice, the offer for Wrocław is clearly limited. In the past there were numerous day and night trains connecting the capital of Lower Silesia with the cities of neighboring countries and Black Sea resorts. In the era of railway revival, including the development of night connections in Europe, it is necessary to pay attention to the position of Wrocław that favors its inclusion in the network of international connections in Western Europe. Wrocław has the potential to be an important railway junction between Eastern and Western Europe, and its potential is the main subject of research presented in this work. The aim of the article is to outline the possibilities of developing international rail connections passing through Wrocław in the third decade of the 21st century on the basis of the analysis of old timetables and forecasts for the development of the network of connections between Poland and Western European countries. The old timetables may allow the reconstruction of connection routes existing in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. On the other hand, the modernization of the railway infrastructure is an opportunity for new connections on the basis of the timetables from the past, but with reduced travel time and higher comfort during the ride. Infrastructure investments can help to establish such connections from Wrocław, which would strengthen its role as a railway junction on an European scale.
