The mathematical model describes the process of upflow direct filtration through the activated carbon bed. It has been found that the potential uses where the proposed model is applicable are limited by one of the parameters - the coefficient of molecular diffusion. For multicomponent solutions dealt with in water technology, the application of an equivalent molecular diffusion coefficient has been proposed, which describes the average sorbing properties of the system. The value of the proposed coefficient varies during the filter run, as the viscosity of the diffusion environment changes due to the cumulation of the coagulation sludge in the GAC bed. Two methods of viscosity measurements have been proposed: direct measurement with a rotational viscometer and indirect measurement where use is made of the knowledge of the specific surface of the sludge.
