The article deals with the most popular software used by various categories of users and determining the way of increasing the effectiveness of the work with the text processor Microsoft WORD. It is stressed that the development of information technologies, the widespread use of information resources, which are the product of intellectual activity of the most qualified part of the working population of the society, determines the need to prepare not only the younger generation, but also improving the quality and performance of the teachers. For this reason, it becomes urgent to develop specific methodological approaches to the use of new information technologies for the implementation of the ideas of developmental education and personal development. One more important task is providing psycho-pedagogical and methodological developments aimed at identifying optimal conditions of the use of means of new information technologies with the purpose of the educational process intensification, increase of its efficiency and quality. The results of the study showed that 48 people aged from 15 to 62 used in their work text editor Microsoft Word. This is due to the fact, that it contains the most important options for creating a text document: typing; correcting typed text in the usual way, i.e. changing letters, words; cutting fragments of the text, remembering them during the current session, as well as in separate files; inserting fragments in the desired location of the text; changing one word by another partially or fully throughout the text; text formatting, i.e. giving it a certain type in the following parameters: width of the text column, paragraph, margins on both sides, top and bottom margins, line spacing, alignment, edge lines; highlighting a part of the text in bold, italic or underlined font; switching the program to work with another alphabet. The study showed that the level of effectiveness of the work with the text processor directly affects the level of the user’s competence, the possession of fundamental knowledge and skills in the field of information technology, the level of motivation and the vision of specific results. There is an opinion among people that the quality of ICT use in the professional activity is directly influenced by basic education and chronological age, but as this study has shown this statement is not true.

The article deals with different images of social and cultural effects of the financial crisis which are created and propagated by users of the Facebook service. The text consists of two complementary parts. The first part, titled The Faces of Crisis, discusses numerous forms of presenting on Facebook pages the socio-cultural problems that result from the financial crisis. The second part (made up of two sections titled Facebook as a Medium of Colloquial Thinking and “National Bank of the Former Republic of Greece”, respectively) characterizes this social networking service as a medium of colloquial knowledge which is an important element of describing and cognizing reality. The main hypothesis of the reflections developed in the article is based on the belief that Facebook, a medium that serves to express a variety of emotions and feelings, thereby facilitating the articulation of numerous attitudes possible in the public life, is becoming a filter of the civic society.

The paper is a description of pilot research conducted among the students of the Faculty of Architecture in Gliwice to test the questionnaires and draw conclusions for further studies on aesthetic and behavioural quality. An additional target was to define the guidelines for the design of the external image of a university building, which constituted one of the projects run within the framework of the curriculum subject. The analyses were conducted in stages and consisted of open questions, surveys, discussions and free interviews. The conclusions were systematised and, in feasible cases, presented in percentage. The students’ aesthetic preferences were established and guidelines for the design of the facades of university buildings formulated, as well as for their possible modernization.

When designing various applications for forest numerical maps to be used in the forest districts offices of State Forests, it is important to take into consideration preferences of workers performing different functions in these offices. In order to gather information regarding the ways forest maps are used by various persons employed in forest district offices, a survey method was applied. In 2003, questionnaires comprising questions associated with the utilisation of 23 analogue maps were sent to all forest district offices in Poland. Replies in the form of filled questionnaires were received from 1813 persons from 183 forest district offices. The obtained information was fed into the computer data base and appropriate analyses were conducted to determine the profile of map users employed at different posts in the forest district offices. The majority of persons declared that maps of stands are used most frequently (Table 1). Apart from this map, the following four other types of maps were used: the economic-survey map of stands of the forest district range, the economic map, the economic-survey map of planned tending cuts in the forest district range and the territorial map of the range of activities of the given forest district range. The performed analyses allowed the authors to elaborate characteristics of individual users of forest maps. The prepared characteristics referred to the following 7 posts from forest district offices: head forester, deputy head forester, supervising engineer, specialist, forester, deputy forester, and forest guard (Table 2). The greatest number of questionnaires were submitted by foresters, specialists and deputy foresters. On the other hand, head foresters and their deputies and then supervising engineers used the greatest number of maps. The results of the analyses of ways of map utilisation are presented in Tables 3-9. The performed analyses revealed that the scope and method of map utilisation depend, to a considerable extent, on the position occupied by the user. Differences between individual users are very distinct and this fact should be taken into consideration in development of appropriate applications used in forest spatial information systems.

This article presents the Jagiellonian Digital Library, which has been created thanks to the funds granted by the European Union, within the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme. The JDL was started on 19th July 2010 in cooperation with the Digital Libraries Federation and, at that time, found itself on the 39th place regarding the number of published digital materials. However, since December 2012, it has conistently held the first place on that list. The JDL is based on the dLibra feramework and has been developed according to an institutional model that mirrors the organisational structure of the Jagiellonian Library. A single digital item is created in the Dublin Core format with the use of the corresponding detailed MARC 21 bibliographic description, which is subsequently converted from the Computer Catalogue of the Jagiellonian University Libraries Collections. At the same time, the Catalogue and JDL are connected via reflexive links. The JBC collections include mainly the digital copies of journals, which are assigned to many facets and arranged in a poly-hierarchical structure, which allows multi-aspect browsing and increases the chances of obtaining information. This article also presents the results of a survey whose aim was to identify the users of the JDL and explore their fields of interest as regards the contents of the collection. The results of this survey were compared with those of the analysis of the log files from the Apache server, which contains the Lector Application of the system dLibra JDL. In effect, JDL achieved the desired results, moreover, it demonstrated sufficient browsing parametres. The analysis ended with a brief prognosis of the prospects of the development of JDL.

Do obsługi JBC wybrano oprogramowanie dLibra, a w procesie jej tworzenia w modelu instytucjonalnym została wykorzystana istniejąca struktura organizacyjna Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej. Zasoby JBC to głównie kopie cyfrowe czasopism, przyporządkowane do wielu faset, tworzące strukturę polihierarchiczną, umożliwiającą wieloaspektowe przeglądanie i zwiększające szanse dotarcia do informacji.
