The article presents the problems of bioclimatic architecture that derives its traditions from the distant past. Urban settlements aligned with the landscape often benefitted from natural environmental factors pragmatically and symbolically. Nowadays, practice of using solar or wind energy and water in building development becomes more common. The paper presents examples of urban solutions, which use natural environmental factors e.g. to optimize the energy consumption or drinking water in particular urban areas. They fit into the mainstream of Ecological Urbanism, which in the era of climate change in the world has the opportunity to provide for the development of future-oriented architecture environment.

The article discuss the problems and possibilities of use of traditional standards of space composition in comparison with holistic way of thinking in ecological urban design, especially related to these areas of the cities, which became amorphous and extremely degenerated. The traditional role of an architect although takes into consideration his ability to see the human environment as a whole in reality concentrate only on very specific fields often understand as "handsome" design creation. The "new" ecological way of thinking needs different approach, making the not so visual elements the most important in the urban design. The main difficulty lies in making this way of thinking really common and from the other side to integrate the "old rules" of visual composition in good functioning environmental design. Such different angle with the use of specific "environmental aesthetic" and sustainable management in the cities is also a fundamental chance for the forgotten areas in the centers and on the peripheries of these complicated urban ecosystems. The rules of ecological design assume that every solution is particular to local conditions, so this way of thinking seems to integrate in its very core the idea of the identification of space. As a place can be defined through its "geometric personality" it is nearly necessary to try to integrate the multifaceted rules of traditional urban design to the more environmental oriented way of thinking about space. The sense of space in ecological design seems to be the solution to the problem of the creation process and its understanding seems to give the right tools to find the answer how to create the true sustainable city of the future. The importance of the use of clear aesthetic principles combined with the environmental way of thinking is the more important because as Goethe mentioned "We should do our utmost to encourage the Beautiful, for the Useful encourages itself."
